- WabbyTwax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Interesting predictions. I hope the one about Google Talk working with AIM happens I would much rather use GT than AIM's bloatware.
- PotatoSalad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14God I love the block feature.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Why are you telling God?
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11My predictions:
- People start to use IM less and less in favor of MySpace and similar sites and possibly VoIP.
- AIM continues to be the most popular client amongst those who still use IM in the USA.
- Yahoo! Messenger and MSN continue to be popular in most other countries.
- Non-English speaking spammers continue to be the sole users of ICQ, scaring away anyone remotely interested in testing it out.
- General AOL use ("main" AOL not AIM) plummets extremely low. AOL's free, ad-supported version deemed a failure.
- AOL Chat solely used for "M4M' type chatrooms.
- No one will use Google Talk. - Dested, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7This is kind of obscure and off topic, but I just signed up for dodgeball ( a google product) and i started thinking about all the google services i sign up for. Honestly with all of the information I give them, what dont they know about me?
- mooninite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It would be nice if Google would release a Linux client and/or release their IM client as open-source in some form. I'm not sure why they won't do either? They have native or wine clients for their other programs.
Sure, GAIM works with it, but I'm not happy with GAIM and their developement process. - YourTechSupport, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Haha, FTA:
"Corporate IM security and compliance supplier Akonix predicts that "2007 will see a dramatic increase in legal actions against employers for hostile workplace and sexual harassment claims stemming from inappropriate use of IM at work. Dubbed the 'Foley Syndrome' after former Congressman Mark Foley's infamous indiscretions over IM, the harassment of colleagues over IM will likely become front-page news during 2007."
Can I get a witness? - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6That's a terrible prediction.
- Cyphase, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I'm not predicting that this will happen in 2007, at least not completely, but I hope we eventually get to the point where there's a de facto IM protocol. Something like Jabber. It would be even better if all the major IM providers opened up their networks to federation, like Google Talk has done. It would be just like e-mail. Anyone at any domain can talk to anyone else at any other domain.
- ahill7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I use GAIM daily, but I must agree that they're development has been sluggish. Before someone spouts off and says we can't set such high expectations of immediacy for a free program, its been almost 2 years since the last stable GAIM release, a little long as far as I'm concerned. So it is very reasonable to be upset with their development strategy/roadmap.
- YourTechSupport, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Unless I missed that field in the account settings, the size of your johnson?
I'm pretty sure they know about your porn habits. - unloud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Has anyone seen the new Trillian? I think it's really amazing, and it's just in beta. I'm surprised that wasn't mentioned.
- Xilon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Google Talk just uses XMPP which is basically Jabber...
- iofthestorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Beta 5 is pretty damn stable by all accounts. I ran SVN builds for months and had no issues. Gaim devs are just a little nervous about releases, that's all.
- D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'd really like to see major advancements in the Google Talk...support with all the other chat clients and a better over all program would be nice...
- ithejosh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Google talk better be working with AIM because im tired of wasting processor space on a stupid client. I'm tired of using GAIM, and Trillian, if google talk could be my trillian, i'd be a lot better off.

Gtalk is so similiar to Jabber in fact, that if you have Trillian, you use Jabber to connect to GTalk... - joevill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hear ya! I stopped using ICQ because it became bloatware
- radu79, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Phones and software for mobile devices will make VoIP accessible. Your mom still won't know that VoIP means Voice over IP (or what that means), but the proliferation of devices made for Skype, WLM, and Yahoo voice chat will make VoIP easier and more common. These phones were all over CES last January, and now the prices are reasonable, and wireless access points in the home commonplace. It'll be a hot gift next Christmas."
Welcome to 3 years ago..
I am using Skype for my PocketPC since 2005 (but it's been there for longer than that). - bigblueball, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Define "good." A lot of people like Google Talk for it's simplicity, although if you're friends aren't using it, it won't help much. It's also gained popularity among Gmail users, because it integrates with Google Chat and saves your IM logs in your Gmail inbox (if you configure it to save them). Personally, I like it for all of those reasons, but I still end up using other IM networks just to reach all my contacts. I can't force them to switch.
Other people are put-off by the fact that Google Talk doesn't have video or saccharine-sweet smileys. Meh. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2whats with ***** 2 paragraph articles and digg?
they're like magnets or something - Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2 whats telepathy and whats tapioca
- unloud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I read the article, and even searched the page for trillian and astra after you said that. It doesn't mention it.
- bigblueball, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2My bad -- you're right. I was thinking of this story: http://www.bigblueball.com/forums/website-news/39081-2006-look-back.html
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1>Gtalk is so similiar to Jabber in fact, that if you have Trillian, you use Jabber to connect to GTalk...
Gtalk IS jabber. It just forces SSL on a certain port. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1For the Linux side of things theres going to be a lot of interesting stuff done with the Telepathy project. Ubuntu looks like it will be using Telepathy backend with Tapioca Client in Feisty.

- nickmatina, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Predictions perhaps, but many of these things have been done by this company:
http://www.chatstat.com
They have also managed to throw in 7 IM Clients, VOIP, Operator Analytics, Sales Analytics, Web Analytics, and On the fly language translation. - McDavies, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0If Google talk works with AIM won't this be good for ichat? I believe right now you can text but not chat or video. How many use Google Talk user are there? Is it any good?
- bigblueball, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2I'll see what I can digg up at CES on Monday. I leave for Vegas tomorrow.
- JonForTheWin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I predict that a cross-platform Free Software replacement for Ventrilo/Teamspeak will emerge because the demand is there and the appropriate libraries to make such a thing easily are there.
Oh and because I know some people personally brainstorming and already starting to write it so yeah, I predict this ***** and as long as one of them doesn't get a girlfriend or something gay like that again it should ahppen. - bigblueball, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Actually, read the article and you'll see that Trillian Astra web edition was indeed mentioned. And yes, it looks fricken awesome!
- Fidodo, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Ok, here's my prediction. Voice recognition technology will let you speak out your message to send in text. Also voice construction technology will be able to translate text messages to make them sound like your friends voice.
