Seriously, if that is your reason for choosing a browser I would make up something else; that is if you do not want to be laughed at and ridiculed. - takitus, on 10/12/2007, -5/+30IE7 still does not have the standards support that FF and other browsers do. It should be called IE6.5
- mulicheng, on 10/12/2007, -6/+31Firefox.. because using IE under Wine stinks with IE6 and I don't have the time to try and figure out how to get IE7 working that way right now anyway.
- jcapogna, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24You have think like a Microsoft employee: Microsoft doesn't have to follow the standard, they get to make their own and force the world to adapt.
- bobbybobington, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25FireFox baby! I've gotten used to it and it really grows on you. Besides, why switch back to IE? FF works fine, (or even better?)
- twooranges, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20I'm addicted to speed. so i gotta go with Opera *POOF*
- shakin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16"I am not sure how you could obtain/use IE7 under WINE anyhow since they have the Windows Genuine "Advantage" crap."
I've had IE6 in Wine pass WGA, which just shows you how awful WGA is if it thinks Linux is a genuine version of Windows :) - adidax, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20Graphical Browsers are soo overrated. I'm sticking to Lynx.
- zeptobyte, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15When I switched to Firefox, I had good reasons to. Security, tabs, etc. Those issues have been addressed with IE7, so if I were currently an IE user, I would probably have no reason to switch to Firefox. However, I also have no particular reason to switch back to IE7. And at least 1 reason not to -- I'm accustomed to Firefox. But I do have IE7, and it's not bad at all.
- jmzook, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16I'll still be using Opera. I downloaded IE7, and I really don't like it, mainly because the buttons and search fields are locked in place and can't be rearranged! This may sound trivial, but it really annoys me that I can't make it the way I want it.
- zzz@tkz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Editing userchrome.css isn't installing a plugin or extension. You fail :).
- shadyblade, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15The Fox
Do a Google search for IE7 vulnerabilities.
Yeah. - blankman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13I have a 2.43GHZ Pentium 4 with 1gb of ram. It's not slow. IE is.
- troydoogle7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11ad block and filterset decrease page loading times by huge amounts. I have installed it but I will stick to ff. Perhaps opera would be my favorite if roboform worked on it
- Khuffie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11@mrFREEZE:
All of the features that I used extensions for in Firefox are built-in in Opera, without slowing down the software and being a memory hug. - blankman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I just installed IE7 and it feels very bulky. Just closing a window feels very clunky. I liked the old version if IE better than this. The new menu is also VERY annoying. Especially the file menu under the navigation.
It doesn't matter though, because I use Firefox as my main browser anyway. - kudos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I think 7 is a perfectly acceptable version number, but the fact is 6 years on from version 6 they should be after incrementing it a bit more along the way.
Thanks to firefox giving it a kick in the ass, us web developers have a much rosier future to look forward to. - latova, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Nobody really bothers with wine + IE, theres some obvious limitations when you do so. Any site that requires one are usually ones not worth visiting these days. A couple of years back it was the opposite, but thanks to Firefox's major push, linux and apple no longer have any website browsing problems as developers have now catered to firefox.
- NeilM, on 10/12/2007, -9/+17FIREFOX FTW
- PYREX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9adblock
period - Jumangi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I started out using Netscape 2.
I switched to IE 4 because it was better(yes MS had a better product at one time), as Netscape stagnated(remember the 50 different releases of Navigator4.xx?).
Then I went with Firefox because it was clearly the best at the time.
Basically when I switch its because I feel the other software is better than what I'm using now. IE 7 isn't bad but its not better than Firefox nor even quite as good still IMO, so I stay with Firefox. - nazsco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Opera
(just because firefox reloads a page to show the source. crap) - phytonix, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Firefox is retarded. I use Opera.
And I feel IE7 looks better than Firefox. Although I use Mac. - mercurio, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12uh... can you say Firefox extensions? Microsoft can't.
I love the fact that if I don't like the way something works in Firefox, I can find a extension that makes that something work better. If not, I can write something that works better and provide it for the community's enjoyment.
Go Firefox - rtini, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10This is a pretty stupid question for Linux and Mac OS X users... You know... The people who prefer operating systems without spyware or viruses...
- Bob042, on 10/12/2007, -15/+22To all the people going to say Opera despite knowing they'll get dugg down: We didn't ask you.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13Normal people use Firefox.
- skankyBacon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It's like the old joke:
"How many Microsoft employees does it take to screw in a light bulb?
None, they just declare darkness the industry standard." - Sphonix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8We still need people using IE. Who else is going to view all of those ads which we block.
In fact, if Microsoft allowed some basic ad-blocker, the internet would run out of money, or more likely Microsoft would be sued... sued more I mean. - arduenn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Darn, wrong reply button. Digg down plz.
- grumpyrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6An honest opinion from a FF 1.5 user typing this in IE7.
For IE7.
* Cleartype looks awesome
* I love the multi-tab homepage thing (any FF extensions to do this??)
* I love the Quicktabs feature
* They really need to copy the 'Find' status bar (hit ctrl F and start typing) thing.
* I prefer the 'X' on each tab rather than how FF does it. My mouse has a habbit of double clicking and that can end up closing more tabs than I like.
* It was a stupid idea to move the home button etc.
* Missing my forecastfox extension :(
I am comparing with FF 1.5, will use FF 2 when it is released. - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I'm not going to even bother with IE7 unless someone can crack the installer and bypass the WGA crap... (I'll give it a week).
And even then, I'll only have IE7 for the benefit of a more-secure IE Tab. - misterjangles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Actually they call them add-ons. The capability has been around since IE 5 but now they are promoting community involvement probably to try to out-do firefox in that area
http://www.ieaddons.com/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I use both, but I use IE7 a lot more than FF.
Let the digging down begin! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Firefox. Internet Explorer 7 is not available for my operating system.
- DigitalBrian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I am a legal windows user, I bought windows XP with my hard earned money, and I am going to use FireFox because I am TIRED of having to justify myself to Microsoft genuine avantage piece of crap every time I as must as fart in Windows XP.
I am tired of becoming a automatic suspect of piracy every time I want to download anything from the Windows site, it is almost like having to show your receipt for the clothes your wearing every time you go to the clothes store.
So no more Microsoft, XP is the last Microsoft program I BUY, as soon as it becomes too old and too buggy I change to Linux, and I am not installing anymore of their software on my computer. - clickwir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6FF 1.5.0.7 Now.
FF2 when they get the font sizeing right. All the RC's have messed up fonts. Sizes are different on all pages. sent them screen shots but they "don't see a problem". - darkmotion, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6FF for life :)
- Nodren, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7i installed the final ie7(i havnt bothered with the beta's at all) it installed fine, it asked me to reboot, i did, the second i opened it, it crashed.
so back to firefox 2.0 for me, at least the release canidate runs for a while before randomly crashing :P(which i expect, its not a final release)
and i dont junk up my computer with alot of stuff, and it was a relatively new windows install - michaelbeckham, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I am using IE on Windows ME. I aint falling for this fire-foxe crap. What is that anyway? AND WHATS WITH ALL THESE POPUPS
For the record thats sarcasm... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Opera can remember your form data and fill it in automatically for you. It can also maintain multiple datasets for individual sites/pages and allow you to select which you want to use.
RoboForm is good and it predates that kind of functionality by a long time, but FF/Opera/IE aren't against pinching an unpatented idea and making it a feature. - ArianeB, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I have downloaded both and put them through their paces.
The good news is that both browsers offer more secure features including phishing blockers and other enhancements, they also "claim" to be more compatible with HTML and CSS standards for web design. Both of these are good things, except that many web pages may not look normal under the new browsers as they use non-standard code. That's the good news.
Now for the bad: Both browsers are not very compatible with their earlier incarnations, so until people actually convert, we will have four browsers clogging up the works.
IE 6 is still going to be used heavily as there are a lot of people still using 98, ME, NT, 2000 and XP SP1, as well as a lot of people just saying "no" to the optional upgrade. (which may become mandatory soon, as Microsoft will no longer actively plug security holes in IE6)
Meanwhile, as word spreads that old themes and extensions used in firefox 1.5 won't work right in 2.0, there may be some firefox users staying away from upgrading there too.
What I have seen in IE 7, I do not like. The biggest negative is that its "sleek" looking interface is a radical departure from IE 6. Since most of IE 6 users are web novices, I foresee a lot of people having difficulty understanding the interface, and not being able to find the buttons they knew how to use before. The top bar contains in order: back, forward, address, refresh, stop, search, search options. This cannot be changed or adjusted in any way. Also what used to be at the top -- File Edit View Favorites Tools Help -- is by default not turned on. You can right click the top and enable "Menu Bar", but it will still sit below the top bar.
Another negative of IE7 is the constant security warnings for the most basic things, like copying and pasting text into a form might pop up a warning about giving a website access to your clipboard, or just trying to add a URL on this web page right now gets a security warning about scripted pop-ups. This is going to annoy experienced users to no end, and scare beginning users from even using the Internet.
Meanwhile, Firefox 2.0 has problems of its own. It's implementation of Javascript is bugged, as some legitimate scripts wont run correctly. It does not work very good in 1.5 ether, but you would think they would have fixed it by now, especially since they upgraded to javascript 1.7.
Javascript and extension issues aside, I think Firefox 2.0 is the better of the two. I'd prefer IE 6 with tabs, rather than IE 7, but rumor is IE 7 will be an automatic update download, making 6.0 an unsupported orphan.
In the mean time, I'm sticking with Flock (a Web 2.0 friendly version of Firefox) as my default browser. Because it is the ONLY browser that complies fully with W3 standards, Opera is my backup browser. That leaves IE7 and FF2 in an epic battle for 3rd place. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I was not aware it was even possible to get that monster of a beast IE off the ground in WINE without having CrossOver office or some SERIOUS modifications to your .wine/ setup. I am not sure how you could obtain/use IE7 under WINE anyhow since they have the Windows Genuine "Advantage" crap.
- AngryPunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Why do you have to choose one over the other? I've currently got both IE7 and Firefox 2 installed on my system. Sometimes I fire up firefox, other times I fire up IE. It's not really a big deal...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3been using RC3 since it's release... 0 problems
- M1THR4ND1R, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"so which one will you using - IE 7 or FireFox 2"
Neither. Opera, all the way :P - DigiRaven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm not sure if I and you are on the same planet because IE7 seems to be fine by me. Its very clean cut and no problems loading all the pages I visit or design. So what are you all smoken anyway and pass it over here. IE7 I see nothing wrong with.
- Leonaken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Firefox 2.0, because frankly I know better than to use Internet Explorer. Interface features aside, IE7 still has the same rendering engine and pretty much the same vulnarbilities as IE6 underneath.
- zediker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5ff sucks!, opera for life!
- freff, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Opera
