- webkidd, on 02/03/2008, -0/+17Im I going crazy?
This guy just said half the apps he never used, The other half we said were not work related or he did not trust.
Im not even sure what I just read..... - inactive, on 02/03/2008, -1/+17Sorry but the only work you will ever get from me when I'm at the beach is a swift kick in the nuts.
- s0nicfreak, on 02/03/2008, -0/+14Become a lifeguard.
- Hosalabad, on 02/03/2008, -0/+11Yeah unless you have a real job.
I can't see relying on flickr to configure a Cisco router for me. - abru, on 02/03/2008, -1/+9all in favour of beach working. uk weather just wont play along though.
- mark076h, on 02/03/2008, -0/+7Earth Class Mail is very interesting, never heard of this before.
- dotlizard, on 02/03/2008, -0/+6i am totally equipped to do this except one thing -- very simply: laptop with all the bells & whistles, and mobile phone with unlimited data plan that works as a modem -- but what's missing is a solar panel beach umbrella, to provide shade and power.
- hello2usir, on 02/03/2008, -0/+6There's still plenty of bush at the nude beaches.
- gaiserrc, on 02/03/2008, -0/+6I agree, with you. This guy just wrote an about someone else's article and put it out there like it was his great idea. BTW who woks at the beach?
- bdbr, on 02/03/2008, -0/+6I first installed wireless in my house so I could work out on the back deck. It was kind of expensive at the time. I got the wireless net access, got the wireless phone, set up the deck chair, got out the laptop...and I couldn't see a damn thing on the laptop screen in the bright sun.
- jan1981, on 02/03/2008, -0/+5idiotic.
name me ONE notebook that has the brightness to be used on the beach on a sunny day!!
The idea of people/students using their notebook and WiFi outdoors is as old as your mom....but absolutely not practical.
This list sucks also, coz the topic is wrong. You could liberate from cost intensive Apps you'd have to install by using these mediocre web-Apps.
And I've already seen dozens of lists of Web-Apps. Nothing new in this digg story. - Lorddias, on 02/03/2008, -0/+4Don't go work at San Francisco Bay.
- ufoman, on 02/03/2008, -0/+4faxzero.com to send a free fax online.
efax.com to get a free fax number so someone can send a fax to you online.
grandcentral.com to get a free phone number and online voicemail. - drgmdp, on 02/03/2008, -0/+3the whole movie should be a loop of will smith exploding himself over and over again
- crushfan, on 02/03/2008, -2/+5Read more, you'll get faster..
- musictechgeek, on 02/03/2008, -0/+3How is using 20 different web apps different from "multiple technologies?" At least a Remote Desktop session lets a person work with apps they already know.
- jakem1, on 02/03/2008, -0/+3I just watched it last night and wish I'd read your comment first. That's the problem with Bittorrent - you can watch anything whenever you want, even though you probably shouldn't.
- salvatoreiovene, on 02/03/2008, -0/+3Lamest. Article. Ever.
- jsebrech, on 02/03/2008, -1/+3This is just a listing of online personal productivity apps, most of which have little to do with work.
If you want to work from the beach, get yourself a light-weight laptop with a cellphone data card, and run a remote desktop session to your workstation at home or at work. - civilizedevil, on 02/03/2008, -0/+2i do. lifeguard.
- CharlesSaint, on 02/03/2008, -0/+2I decided to read up on mint.com as to see how reliable it is and what security measures it employs. Obviously, no remote solution is superior to a local one in terms of security, but as far as storing your personal bank info (account #'s), they don't keep that information on their servers. Rather, when you log-in, it remotely connects to the various online counterparts for the accounts you hold (ie: it connects to Capitol One's online service if you have a capitol one card) and pulls the information from their servers. It does this using 128-bit encryption as well as the sites info being 128-bit encrypted.
So essentially, it's no different than going to each individual bank's website and looking at your balance that way, but mint keeps it in one central area, and allows you to set budgets, send alerts to your phone or e-mail of various kinds (like if your account drops below a certain level or if there is a large purchase that is made), and also categorizes your spending so you can see where your money is going.
All in all, I'd say it's worth a look from what I've seen so far. Just my two cents. - krystofr, on 02/03/2008, -0/+2don't forget HawaiianTropic.com..... you can get a nasty burn working from the beach!
- jakem1, on 02/03/2008, -0/+2Exactly. I'm yet to work at a company that uses any online apps to conduct it's business. I'm not sure what kind of work you could really do using all the apps this guy refers to but I doubt it would be the sort of work that anyone other than a tech "journalist" with a mental block would do.
- edebolt, on 02/03/2008, -0/+2I was on board until I read Costa Rica and had to laugh... Outside the capital of San Jose the speed is mostly dial up and even then sketchy... He will need to beat it back to the Central Valley for quicker 2mb reliable service.. Still nice but no beach
- smackhero, on 02/03/2008, -0/+2that's why you only work at the beach on a cold cloudy day.
or at night. - ventralnet, on 02/03/2008, -0/+1they were on some Mojo station show on entrepreneurs.. It is an interesting idea
- maddom73, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1Really? It would be a dream!
- GIMAD2008, on 02/03/2008, -1/+2Cool item!
- ravage86, on 02/03/2008, -0/+1Thank you Mint. Now that I can give my personal bank account information to you, I can work from the beach!
Seriously, why through them in the list? - jan1981, on 02/03/2008, -0/+1and wtf does this have to do with beaches?
- phoneticgigz, on 02/03/2008, -0/+1But this list does not have an online tool for "how to get a beach house" WTF!
- fjklein6501, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1I am ready. Applicable to the purpose.
- Dipster, on 02/03/2008, -0/+1Don't forget to be on a beach that's within range of a cell tower with decent EVDO coverage.
- bitcloud, on 02/03/2008, -0/+1apparently if you work at the beach where there is no wifi, you're best of switching to web apps for no reason whatsoever...
- drgmdp, on 02/03/2008, -0/+1i was just thinking that.. why would anyone like to work at beach? i go to beach to rest and look hot chicks and that, not to work...
- bitcloud, on 02/03/2008, -0/+1because you're pasty, fat, and you live in your mothers basement.
- drgmdp, on 02/03/2008, -0/+1recent studies demonstrated that exposure to sun is healthy (within proper protection)
- dbr_onix, on 02/04/2008, -0/+1You mean.. I can go outside and stop living in fear of that evil cancer-causing light?
....basic common-sense as demonstrated sensible exposure to sunlight is good for you, while lying outside for 12 hours a day wearing nothing but sunglasses is probably going to lead to skin-cancer and other fun problems. - bitcloud, on 02/03/2008, -0/+1but... but how do you get wifi?
- dbr_onix, on 02/04/2008, -0/+1..a fair point - Why would anyone suggest online applications to use on a beach, somewhere there isn't going to be any internet connection (or fairly expensive connections via mobile-phone-data-plans), instead of using regular desktop applications, which will work anywhere your laptop will start up....
This whole article is silly, as "webkidd" said, half the items listed the author had never used, and the rest he didn't seem to like either... - skyfire1, on 02/03/2008, -0/+1Why would you want to?
- aaroh, on 02/03/2008, -0/+1I would add gmail and fax to email to the list. lynda.com is also good for software tutorials, not free though.
- dbr_onix, on 02/04/2008, -0/+1Having a warm laptop next to you when you're on a UK beach seems like a good idea..
- ardklg, on 02/04/2008, -0/+0If you actually work for any sizeable company, their corporate firewall probably prevents you from getting to most of the sites mentioned, making it problematic to deposit your documents before you leave for your beach vacation, or retrieve them after you get back (if you try to do it from the office).
- morrowc, on 02/03/2008, -1/+1OLPC .... you are welcome.
- ventralnet, on 02/03/2008, -2/+2ur an idiot
- Len4a, on 02/08/2008, -0/+0I don't think this guy knows exactly what he is speaking about .. anyway I've read the article
- psufleish23, on 02/03/2008, -2/+1I already saw it...you actually just wasted 3 more min. of mine as I had to sit and ponder the timeliness of your comment.
.burried. - BigBallistix, on 02/03/2008, -3/+1Lol at your reliance upon multiple technologies to achieve simple tasks.
- BigBallistix, on 02/03/2008, -3/+1Skin cancer FTW! Make all the dermatologists rich so we can be prettier!
