- PsycheRevolt, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21because any idea rather than democracy means you're a terrorist
- quinnk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14This isn't strictly related to the topic at hand, but...
Anarchy implies lack of political organization. Socialism implies inherent political organization. Unless you're using
rather unconventional definitions, it's difficult to claim alleigance to both. - PsycheRevolt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12man make internet radio station... man be proud
- kipin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Running a internet radio station will get your terminated on a lot of shared hosting plans. Ask your webhosting company if you are allowed to run Shoutcast/Icecast before setting this up.
- MediaShipper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9That's #2
- sammyo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Free tools will never provide the only two true essentials:
1) Bandwidth
2) Worthwhile content - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13if i were to create my own internet radio station, the government would secretly close down my radio station for being too socialist and anarchist.
- olego, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Next article: How to not get sued by RIAA.
- gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Is there anyway for me to talk on my station live?
- Poromenos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Actually yes, there is, just press the mic button on the DSP.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8you forgot "3) people who care about what you have to say".
- tehmoth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@quinnk: anarchy may imply "lack of political organization" but anarchism does not necessarily imply that, e.g. the Makhnovists, the CNT-AIT, IWW and anarchocommunist and anarchosyndicalist organisations world wide. Anarchism (left anarchism at any rate) is generally viewed as the libertarian current in socialism.
- rkuchiki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you really want exposure use Shoutcast DNAS, or better yet, use Steamcast.
Steamcast (www.steamcast.com) allows you to list in both xiph-type directories and Shoutcast.com's directory. They also list you in their own directory. So that is at least 3 different public station directories right there.
Then when you want to go professional, it is time to shell out the $ for SAM Broadcaster... As an ex-radio-owner, I know how much it costs to run a "professional" radio. And we weren't even all that "pro", perhaps intermediate. To go pro you will then need licensing (we kind of evaded this since we weren't playing content the RIAA could touch), more servers, better mics, ect...
For a casual DJ, just starting off, or maybe just rebroadcasting podcasts, this tutoral is fine. But if you ever want to become professional, be aware it will cost you. - micro506, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@jvux
Wow, you're so rebellious and cool! - Omnius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The anarchist idea does not imply "lack of political organization". It demands a highly organized, intelligent society in order to function (in theory). This "anarchy is chaos" and "do whatever you want" misinformation is left-over propaghanda from Wilson's 'Red Scare" in the 1920's and 30's, when anarchists were an actual force to be reckoned with. Any successful anarchist organizations were highly organized, otherwise they wouldn't have had any success. Spain 1936 is a great example of anarchy's organization and hard work.
- moshguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dude that's great. I live in York, so I tuned my stereo to that station and giggled like a little school girl. I love 3 second delay stereo.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I learned that lesson the hard way =P But good read nonetheless
- TigerClaw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3There are sites that have services that allows you to run your own internet radio station like live365, Though you gota pay a monthly fee in order to do it.
- mtbz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If any of you want to have your own free live radio show, drop us an email. We're completely open source and run streams from donated servers and bandwidth
http://freematrix.us - WoozyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1by reading this article it seems that the web sites are offering radio stations to millions of people should have a bandwidth like 1,000,000,000,000 kb/s which is impossible. This article is great but I like to know what is a proper way to do this? Do we have to use any 3rd party components to do it or is it possible to make our own?
- seinman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Podcasting isn't live.
- datagod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Poromenos, broadcasting means sending out a signal that people can receive. TCPIP is fundementally different. Broadcast over tcpip is like saying "Good talking to you" in an email.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Make sure you also have the proper licensing to actually broadcast the music.
- zouhair, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What about Peercasting ?? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peercasting
- The42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like broadcasting, it's more fun than podcasting because you get to interact with your listeners. You can start a chat for requests and discussions and cultivate a community like that. I used to do it on CAD Radio, the radio station for the comic Ctrl-Alt-Del. I had no idea at the time that it was illegal -- but subversive1 is right. If you broadcast without first going to the RIAA and getting approval, and paying license fees, and submitting your playlists to the RIAA, AND not playing more than three songs from a given artist or compilation within three hours, then you are broadcasting illegally (assuming you're in the U.S.). It's still really cool, and I encourage aspiring broadcasters to give it a shot, just be careful if your station gets popular as you might get a cease and decist....
- subversive1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I used to do this starting in 2000 until the RIAA incorporated the license fees.I loved doing it and I miss it,but just cannot afford the fees nor do I want to adhere to the rules of the playlist rules.
- Poromenos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Broadcasting" is like, uhh... radio.
- rideaurocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, but then bandwidth quickly becomes an issue. Comcast gives 384Kbps upstream with their standard home service. With a 128Kbps stream 3 listeners would be pushing it. I have a pro account (with Cogeco) that gives me 1Mbps up. 8 listeners would be impossible. So then you cut the quality. But cutting in half still gives you a very small listener base.
Unless you're planning to stream over your home network alone, a home Internet radio server isn't what you're looking for. - h2d2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2For a second there I thought you where telling people to just man for "internet radio stations". But then I realized how far off I was.
- bendiciones, on 10/05/2008, -0/+0hola como puedo encontrar mi radio en digg
- JubbaG, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2If you're on a Mac, you can use NiceCast (google it) and Shoutcast. That's what I'm running mine on: http://24.149.185.11:8100
- metalrock76, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I stream my local radio station on my site. http://www.metal4rock.net/modules.php?name=thex

http://mercora.com - 1radio, on 11/20/2008, -0/+0If you'd like to DJ on a station, but not go to the hassle of setting everything up yourself - then give http://1Radio.org a go. This is my station for wannabe broadcasters, podcasters and experienced broadcasters. Sign up for free and you can be on the air in the next available hour. We have about 80 active broadcasters at the moment so plenty of room for more.
- rkrause, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good point. Services like http://www.live365.com and http://www.swcast.net help by providing blanket licensing coverage for stations that are starting out. That way the RIAA is no longer a worry.
- Poromenos, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2That is true, but those are the bitrates you're broadcasting at :)
- dkocolin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's the biggest pain in the ass in the world, that no more than 3 songs from an artist in 3 hours thing.
It makes it so we can't do say, an hour of X artist, at our local college station since we also broadcast online - ooOOjaXedOOoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I run my own SHOUTcast station, and set up an IM bot (AIM) to enable me (and anyone else) to request songs, see what is playing, see what has played, etc..
Check it out: http://jaxed.com:8000
AIM: jaxedmaster - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1This an interesting writeup but the comment: "I prefer to broadcast in Vorbis because it's smaller and has much better quality than MP3."
Smaller, I'll give you, that's easy to proove. Very few people can tell the difference between Vorbis, MP3, wma and most other encodings at all but the worst bit rates. - datagod, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"Broadcasting" over tcp/ip is the equivalent of newspapers "broadcasting" the news to you by delivering a paper to every household.
Streaming sucks for the same reason. It makes no sense. Just download the file and listen to it. Otherwise, you are just downloading it to a temp directory and listening to it once, giving you the illusion of broadcast. - elkos, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1poromenos has porose me
- lweese, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2nobodylikesonions.com
- letmereplynow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0hmmm why not run IIS, Apache or any free software on your home computer, remember your own IP and like in 10 minutes, you have your personal radio for work. No need for cds.
- Poromenos, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1The oddcast plugin for foobar2000 is on the same page, the steps are more or less the same and if you're using foobar2000, chances are you know which ones are different :)
- MediaShipper, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3I disagree. Socialism can coexist with anarchism. I don't know how you would set the system up, but the freedom of anarchism could be reigned in by the collective well being of socialism. A cheap and inexhaustable supply of energy would be the only way to start thinking of a new political system.
- spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1What, nothing for foobar2000?
- -=Ross=-, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2No, not with this software.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12 words podcast..... ok one word.
