"take without the owner's consent"
They still have the song after downloading it. I think you meant to say he is infringing copyrights, which is still BS. - VicousT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Damn no one even reads the article. Half of these comments don't even cover the exact subject of the article.
- pabster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Agreed for just music playing. But Winamp's "Library" sucks and can't compare to iTunes.
I use both. - adc89, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8That's strange. I have an option in mine though I never use it, you must have a lot of free time.
I have never needed to go into my iPhoto or iTunes folders. I just drag out anything I need. - anymir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yes, and you know what else is in the library file? The destination to each song, so when you move your collection, it all gets ***** up.
- d.rosing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I think the point is to maintain your playlists, ratings, etc. Copying the folder directly from one to another doesn't do this, especially when crossing platforms...
- CrazedGeek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6IMO, iTunes > Winamp for a music library. Otherwise, Winamp is pretty awesome.
- mtappenden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yes it is easy if you are going from one Mac to another (or PC to another) and have the same username. Otherwise you have to do a simple find and replace on the XML file, but that's not hard, or rocket science.
- strictlybogart, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4i love how the author writes: "However, if you're like me and you've got a 60 gigabyte library and you don't have time to stand around wasting burning dozens of discs..."
followed immediately by, "Warning: This method is NOT prescribed by Apple in any of their documentation, so before you start, BACK UP YOUR MUSIC LIBRARY. Just in case." - NeoRicen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3VLC may play alot of formats but it is the ugliest, worst program on the face of the planet from a usability perspective, and people wonder why OSS doesn't go mainstream.
- strictlybogart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i gave up on winamp when they had to start supporting two different version, because no one liked their new release.
- goatman93, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Foobar2000 > Winamp
- quazywabbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This guy didn't look too hard on apple's site. here is another article that talks about moving using the ipod (which is actually being used as a portable storage device in the article). http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300173 . Since this isn't a backup you really wouldn't want to use the backup article.
- Donut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2about a year ago when i moved my iTunes library from my Dell PC to my Mac Mini all i did was copy the XML file (which i keep backed up every so often, in cash iTunes decides to crap out on me)and imported that to the iTunes on my MacMini. then just changed the iTunes Library Location in the General section of the ADVANCED tab. and that was all that needed to be done.
i never had to go changing up the source path in the XML file at all. - archer75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I checked with apple, iphoto doesn't have the same option as itunes to not mess with your folders.
I don't know what this has to do with having alot of free time.
I actually use picasa in Windows now which I like alot better. I import my photos on to the desktop from camera, get them organized the way I want to in folders and such and then just paste them in my pictures folder. Picasa adds them when it launches automatically.
This way I have all of folders very organized and if I ever choose to stop using one photo program and use another it's all still very organized.
It also makes them easy to find an email(I don't use P0P3 mail) or post to various websites.
I also don't buy music via itunes and may not continue using itunes forever so it's also nice to have those folders and directories organized the way I want them. Also makes things alot easier for backups and restores.
If you ever stop using iphoto and itunes after you've given them complete control over your files and then start using other programs it just makes a giant mess. - astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Actually, it was WinAmp's and WMP's suckiness that drove me to iTunes.
WinAmp is great as a little mp3 player, but it's incredibly slow and buggy when used for managing a large collection of music, at least it was for me in 2004 when I was searching for a new home for my music collection. In 2004/2005, iTunes was literally the only option. - klawz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3VLC > WINAMP (Winamp was king in its day though, but not now).
- mozzep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think foobar is pretty nice for windows, but for Mac iTunes is so dominant that no one else really makes other options. I guesss songbird or cog, but iTunes is better.
- thanared, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2DRM is DRM. Don't hate iTunes because it has to do DRM. All you have to do is burn the song out to cd and rip it back in to kill the DRM. iTunes supports mp3 which is the open format that started all this music on computers.
The article is how to move a full library with saved playlist, ratings, etc from one computer to another, specifically across a Mac and a PC. For those clowns out there that only use one platform, this may not appear to be a big issue. For those of us who do own Macs and PCs can appreciate this article. - VicousT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The author should have mentioned: Always make a copy of the xml file before you make changes.
- klawz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it works just fine the way this article is describing... e.g. from mac to pc then back to mac (or from pc to mac then back to pc).
But of course if you go from mac to pc and leave it as that (or pc to mac) you will encounter problems. - knot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1From the comment on LifeHacker, you can save other metadata like playcount by moving ".itl" file as well

Anyway like that guy said all you have to do is burn your songs to a CD then rip it.
- exoendo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Heres what you do and what I did:
1) Download Tinkertool
2) enable so you can see hidden files
3) Open up your ipod icon on the desktop
4) go to ipod_control > music
Ta da, now just copy to your itunes library.

- zdiggler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Winamp and Media Monkey FTW!!!!!!
- archer75, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6I'm not using that method. I don't like programs screwing with my folder structure. I have everything setup just the way I want it and I hate it when itunes messes with that.
That's why I hate iphoto. At least I can tell itunes not to mess with the folders but I have no such option in iphoto. - mozzep, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1and neither does yours, or mine.
- RandoFernando, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0advanced > consolidate library
- maddendude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1For Video VLC is King, but for Audio, I still rather use Winamp - 'blackdawn10' skin, its pretty kickass. Everything fits together perfectly, the equalizer, the player, the playlist.
- tedlow, on 03/07/2009, -0/+0Have you guys tried SuperSync? I find it a great iTunes synching device. It’s working great for me and my family to merge music between our computers to create a master library around the house.
Check it out for yourself. You can download it for free:

- robothenry, on 08/16/2008, -0/+0IT WORKS! I JUST DID IT. I discovered this method once on my own when switching from windows xp SP2 to SP3. It was a lot easier--I just had to change drive letters.
Since then, I've long forgotten how to do it and being a new mac user didn't help either. The only reason I do this is to retain my play counts--this method works great for that purpose! (the note about the method not retaining play counts is wrong
this method has a very small learning curve. if you don't know anything about file paths, that's okay--you'll learn a lot from this process. - rocket, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0The Complete Guide to Rebuilding or Cleaning Your iTunes Library

elevator shoes
Turn any shoes into height increase elevator shoes. - khyberkitsune, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Whatever happened to just moving one whole list of universally-compatible mp3 files in bulk? I mean, FFS. Unless you're using crap proprietary codecs, you could just open a shared file folder and dump it from windows to a mac and back. I've done this for a while, now, and it's just fine, without all this other nonsense.
- schoate09, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I just drag my MP3s onto a CD, burn, and move to the other machine. Not hard. For the protected .aacs, i copy, then play one, authorize the machine, and bingo. (Make sure to deauthorize the previous unit if it won't be used, or if it will be formatted.)
@klawz, I've used my formentioned method when I swtiched from OS X to Vista, and I encountered no problems. - Azio, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5Why is this on the front page? All you have to do is copy your music folder. It's not that ***** hard.
- bardo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Sounds like a job for SuperSync.. http://www.supersync.com/
Transfers audio files between mac and pc (and pc-pc & mac-mac) to synchronize music libraries. This lets you just synch exactly which files you want to transrer... Works over a LAN, WAN, NAS, iPOD, or any two directories.
The SuperSync demo works on secondary (remote) libraries up to 250 tracks (great for iPods) and the 'pay version' is worth the $29 (or buy more copies for less and share them with friends/family..)
I think its the only application that's cross-platform that really does this (besides iTunes, which definitely doesn't let you move files around on the WAN.. nor does it do a good job with adding/deleting tracks...) It's written using Eclipse's SWT, so its cross-platform (at least Mac & pc)
Download from http://supersync.com/downloads.php
Cheers! - jah102187, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0You beat me to it. I just got a MacBook Pro and you just copy the whole iTunes folder to an external drive or over a network and replace the iTunes folder on the Mac. All the meta-data is in the library file, so all the ratings and play counts, etc. will still be there, no conversion is needed.

Who needs folders? - maddendude, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4Why would PC users actually use iTunes, Winamp kicks its ass. Winamp is probably the greatest music player on any computer.
- afruff23, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Are you stupid? Winamp has every feature iTune's library has and more. It also has *GASP* a true playlist.
- nates, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Let's see... step 1: don't use iTunes because it locks you in and makes you do stupid ***** like this just to enable something you're legally allowed to do ("fair use").
