FFMpegX (http://homepage.mac.com/major4/)
Handbrake (http://handbrake.m0k.org/) - mpancha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8google search for "Handbrake", and guides for Handbrake.... I haven't done much Divx/Xvid'ing on my Mac, but all the forums mention "Handbrake"
- mpancha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Good article. Nice flashback to the University days where my computer ran each night ripping DVDs off of Netflix -> Divx to stream to the hacked XBox in the living room... ahhh, memories.
- FCon4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Thanks for the advice. I've Dugg you down.
- wulfflower, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Some people have portable video players so a tutorial like this is useful to them. Plus, I don't like all the space the ISOs use up. @_@
- dombi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yes, there are a few. Handbrake is one, and ffmpegX is another one. On the ffmpegX page you can also find nicely written tutorials on how to backup your movies.

Good luck! - threepio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6First step: Put on yer eyepatch
Second Step: Faster yer pegleg
Third Step: Prepare yer shoulder fer a parrot
Fourth Step: Gimme a P, gimme an I, gimme an Arrrrrrr, gimme an A, gimme a T, gimme an E!!!
Fifth Step: Watch out for Ninjas. Enjoy! - sinfony, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Not if you already have the discs. Downloading twenty episodes of a show would take forever; ripping and converting them is far faster.
- BTexas108, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7@etruscan
I have numerous seasons of Futurama, Simpsons, and Southpark on DVD and I would like to put it on my laptop to view when I travel places . Rather than lugging the DVDs and swapping them around, i can have all of the episodes at the click of a mouse. That would be my reason why I find this worthy of my digg - wpholmes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Handbrake is great for DVD ---> Quicktime files
although TV series DVD's can be a pain - dragulaaeop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3...ignoring the fact that it takes up anywhere from 5-7GB of storage... as opposed to 700-1400MB for a near-dvd quality compressed dvd rip.
- reject, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This Digg thread has a couple of great guides for backing up DVDs for free, but for those willing to shell out some cash, SlySoft's CloneDVD mobile is probably the best program on the market for backing up from DVD to any mobile device and even DivX, or you could use what culbeda suggested, FairUse Wizard: www.fairusewizard.com .
http://www.slysoft.com/en/clonedvd-mobile.html
Yeah, it's expensive, but it's point-and-click and very straightforward. Or, you could just find a copy on various *cough* torrent *cough* sites. AnyDVD CloneDVD mobile, and you're all set. Just for those who want to search for a trial, you could use uTorrent's search, BitComet, or TorrentTyphoon.com . - deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@hlheavyd
120 fps is far-fetched. I use Handbrake on a Hackintosh (Athlon 64 2.0 Ghz) and on a Mini with a 1.6 Ghz Core Duo, and never get better than 40-50 fps when encoding DVD's to xvid/ac-3.
How do you get 120fps?
Here's something I've learend with Handbrake, use quality %-age, not bit-rate or target file size. You'll get better results. - culbeda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2One beef with the article... (and with all of the "how to do it for free in only 10 additional steps" posts you typically find on videohelp)
From article:
"By "for free" I mean... eer... "for free". There are several software products out there which you can pay for (FairUse Wizard is just one) which will give you the same results, but I say "Why pay when you can do it for free?". "
And FairUse Wizard costs $20 for the full version. I'm sorry, but the time FUW saves is worth far more $20. - ThomasCS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've done that before, but have you noticed the horrendous size of each ISO? Clearly the idea of this tutorial is to make it a managable size in order to keep it on your computer or (heaven forfend) to distribute it on the net.
- djgump35, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2now how about a tutorial on connectiing the cable box's to the computer to record shows to free up room on my dvr.
- sych0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2anyones who's used autogk before should have been able to figure this out. Its not exactly a new way to rip tv dvds or anything. Contrary to the posters comment, its exactly the same as ripping a movie dvd to divx. Instead of choosing the largest ifo, you choose the individual episodes.
- defaulk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Last I checked, no mkv. The best encoding tool out there is StaxRip, IMO. Although as far as I know it doesn't do theora either. x264 support is great.
- bigboludo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can convert to xvid and use 100% quality. The file is a lot smaller than the original .ISO as well. Whether you're going to follow this tutorial or not, I suggest downloading DVD Decrypter ASAP as the site hosting this will probably get a cease & desist from Sony any time now.
- 8-bit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1good call. This is the way I used to do it. Works really well.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Is it just me, or do all these guides make it looks really complicated when its not?
- polymangler, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I knew that netflix subscription would come in handy
- flippedcracker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i recommend Instant Handbrake. http://handbrake.m0k.org/ does everything with just a couple of clicks. converts to .mp4 (H.264) ipod-ready.
- TenebrousX, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6It's up for me
- triskele, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can do the same thing with Handbrake, although it's output it MPEG-4 or AVI. It's a free app and it does everything in a single step, either the entire disk or one title at a time. You can even tailor the output video by selecting a desired resolution, files size, or other parameters.
- ahmerhussain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does AutoGK .mkv H.264 files? what abt Theora?
- sophiaperennis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How is going through 80 different setup screens and 500 different settings 'ease of use' ? Ease of use is BitTorrent and Usenet, one-click magic called 'download'.
- toekneebullard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1etruscan, I like to fall asleep to old shows on my xbox media center. If I put in one DVD, I on;y get four or so episodes. However, converting down to divx, I can get a whole season or more onto one DVD. Makes for much better random viewing.
- hlheavyd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1handbrake rules. ever since i got my Imac intel core duo, I've been able to rip my movies at 120fps from DVD to Divx/ac3. no decrypter needed either.
- jesusfresh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1question for the knowledgeable out there: when he says (twice) not to select a second audio language, can you select a commentary track there (like on every simpsons ep, etc)?
will it merge the two tracks into one, making a mess of it all? or will it keep them distinct, eg like certain files now in media player classic i can select which track i want to listen to if there's a second audio track. - killkingkong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1avi2dvd: http://www.trustfm.net/divx/SoftwareAvi2Dvd.html
- culbeda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Search the videohelp site. They have how-tos for everything.
And you don't have to be a pirate to do it. (But that's 99% of the target audience for that conversion.) - musicgenius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1WASD.TV Episode 2 shows basically the same thing:
http://www.wasd.tv/?p=26 - Jeebugorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is handy! i rented all the seasons to farscape from the video store and tried ripping them before...was using #1DVD ripper.....the audio never synced up so i gave up. this should make it easier. will try again.
- levyjl1988, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What FREE program should I use to convert avi xvid file to dvd stand alone?
- Kingmishima, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i think someone already mentioned Avi2DVD. its free and usually gets the job done with decent quality. i know xvid to dvd can be a pain, avi2dvd can do it in something like, 5 steps. a more technical program would be TMPGEnc, which can be "free" if you're an evil pirate =o
- dadaozei, on 01/04/2009, -0/+0How to converter M4P files to any other video formats? See the guide at http://www.m4p-converter.net/
