- FlyinWhee, on 10/11/2007, -5/+43Wow, what an incredibly stupid tutorial...
Look, it teaches you how to download a software and run it! - AnteChronos, on 10/11/2007, -4/+27So what? It's not like there's no room for both iPhone and non-iPhone stories on Digg. Besides, no everyone cares about the release of the iPhone. I, for one, don't give a crap about it. Doesn't mean that I bury iPhone stories, though. Now go troll elsewhere.
- futzy99, on 10/11/2007, -5/+25I'd say -making- the green screen is a lot harder and more important than having the software.
...
Maybe I'm just bitter because I don't have one. :( - LordSkywalker, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19The physical setup of the greenscreen itself and even more importantly, the lighting setup are both more essential than having a good keying program. The ones that come with Premiere or FCP are fine, or if you want more precision and customization, try DV Matte Pro.
- Protoss, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15WHAT ARE WE YELLING ABOUT?!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Would have been reeaaal nice if Microsoft had integrated something as simple as this into Windows Movie Maker
- corporalclegg24, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10I am. Dont get so worked up!
- NOFXY, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10i have a green wall that works just fine :)
- heavyd14, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Anyone can. Go to a party store and buy a big plastic tablecloth for a dollar. Or maybe some cheap sheets from Walmart. More important is the lighting, make sure its even across the screen.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10I pray that the person is just being sarcastic
- thebellmaster1x, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Zach Braff, is that you?
- lastthingusee, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6People, please don't do this. Lighting is near or more important than the actual screen.
Plus I don't want to see a bunch of crappy YouTube videos with l337 green screen effects. They're bad enough as it is. - Atomic1fire, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Now one can realize their dream of being a disembodied floating head on video
sarcasm - XTX7X, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7I did this for a school project once. I covered a wall in bright, obnoxious green posterboard. The tough part was the lighting, it had to be perfectly even to avoid flares in the camera. I ended up having two construction lights on the sides flooding the screen at diagonals behind the actors, a larger floodlight higher up, and other small ones on the bottom aiming wherever we needed them.
- armourer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Wonderful...
All the more reason not to watch home movies. - oepapel, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Here's a hint: If you are trying to impress someone with your video software, don't say that it works like windows movie maker!
- AMD64MM, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9How many people can have a green screen in their home?
- nevesis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Anyone actually try this software?
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+5Problem with doing things like this in school is the kids who do an incomplete, last minute, half assed job will probably still get the same marks. At least they did in my school =/
- jrbrewin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4not entirely sure why you're getting marked down for stating your preference of nonlinear video editor, and how to make a greenscreen... other than the usual dweeb horde that go round digging down posts for no good reason.
- trogdoor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I was surprised to find that even a dirty, wrinkled, blue tarp will work.
- rebelyell2k5, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4that's easy; pull out your mac.
- Malcx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Build your own...
http://digg.com/software/Greenscreen_for_under_50_TUTORIAL - spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The trick is to diffuse the light properly, a (clean) white bed sheet or something similar in front of your lights usually does the job well enough
- Protoss, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Aww I love Home Movies...
- Auto, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Green screen "like the pros" is a bit of a stretch...
And I agree with previous posters... the lighting issue is paramount... almost any program (even free in this case) can chroma key... and no program will chroma key well unless your lights are bright and right. - D0P3M4N, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Chroma-keying (greenscreen) really isin't that difficult with conventional editing software. Final Cut/Adobe Premier have a pretty effective keyer.
You can use any solid, distinguishable color to make a "green screen" effect though, chroma key blue (a very odd shade of blue) is often used, because it stands out in most light. - jrbrewin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2i think the point here is that this is free.
giving you more money to spend on making the actual screen. Yes, FCP, Premier, Combustion, Vegas, whatever, all have great keying functionality, but most people aren't going to rush out buy that software on a whim as they all (apart from vegas) have pretty steep learning curves, and are all relatively expensive. WAX isn't. - Travelsonic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"What kind of video editing program wouldn't have this feature? "
Windows Movie Maker, 'nuff said. - 15charmaxwtf, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2What kind of video editing program wouldn't have this feature? I don't really know much about it but I know it's trivial.
- jrbrewin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1or Apple's iMovie.. nuff said x2.
- jrbrewin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2plus at least in vegas you get a brilliant chroma or luma key right out of the box without having to deal with all that ***** that you do in shake. Also, it's easier to use, faster to get projects done, costs less, and you don't have to buy a really expensive computer to use it.
your post is irrelevant in this topic of conversation. it's about using a free, easy to use, and therefore limited in functionality application to get a basic job done that is good enough for joe schmoe at home. k? - Sean23, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3I have a large sheet sized peice of bright blue fabric I hang on the wall and it works fairly good. Can't wear blue clothes though...
- iamso910, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yes, and I couldn't get the Chromo Key adjustment to come up. So wasted about 30 mins.
- losierp, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3the reason for not trying it... i'm not using windoze
- parkermauney, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1helldamn. :D:D:D
- usbcd36, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Not to mention the fact that you need a good camera as well. If you're using a DV camera, it's very difficult to get clean edges without a lot of work (or a nodal compositor), since only the grayscale luma channel is of full resolution (the color information is only 1/4 resolution).
- dorshorst, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1STEP 3: ...
- mathew_bug, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Actually, it doesn't even need to be green. Or blue, for that matter.
It needs to be a color that is nowhere else in that scene. Of course, bright colors are always preferred. - frickindeal, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1LOUD NOISES!
- YoshoKatana, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1STEP 4: PROFIT!
Sorry, I had to. Also, the page is down, any link (or name) of the program itself? - bubba9999, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Is that what you call it?
- Chewie67, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'd like to find a cheap, effective way of doing this with iMovie too...
- rebelyell2k5, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1there's a free plugin for iMovie, just search for it.
- awhiteflame, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Intel-based macs?
- futzy99, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Also, you have to avoid shadows, which is a real pain.
- crash128, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2That seems like a pretty silly example. They took the output from a 2d drawing program (like photoshop or illustrator) with a dark green background and merged it onto video.
But, but, the video programs I've seen (after effects, premiere) can do the merge without having to apply the blue/greenscreen filter thing - just create the 2d without a background and pop it into the video program.
I guess what I'm trying to say is don't use the bluescreen filter if you don't have to as it can be tough to get good results, not see crap around the edges.
And it one actually did a real bluescreen in real life, you'd have to buy the blue or green background (roll of paper, or a fabric, or paint, or a cyc). And it probably wouldn't hurt to have a couple of decent lights cause it helps to have the green background be evenly lit.
Bad article, bad. Now go to your room and consider what you've done. - cheezberger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS!!!!!! DO NOT! I DID, AND IT COMPLETLY DESTROYED MY COMPUTER!!! IT DELETED ALL OF MY FILES, LIKE PICTURES AND VEDIOS! EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DONT DOWNLOAD IT WHATEVER YOU DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- dsyncy29, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I think it's funny when I see stuff like this, that I've known for a long time show up on digg; and then actually get digged. I've only had bad experiences with the program in the past.
- LtXenodite, on 10/11/2007, -6/+6Vegas ftw.
All matters aside, you of course need to spend the most time on buying and preparing your greenscreen. Something big, wide enough for a walk-through shot, but somewhat portable, and having proper, even lighting when shooting, are the most important things to be concerned with. Aside from that, it's not too hard to produce a convincing effect with the greenscreen =D -
