- spling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13But won't it make for a totally awesome headline?
"MPAA SUES DEMOCRACY" - misterpony, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Seems like it's not quite ready for prime time, but could be a major player in the future. With the expansion of shows available from RSS and the ability to bookmark like delicious, this could be an all-in-one mesh. At the very least, I bet there's plenty of people scrambling to make copycats right about now... Very cool! Dugg++
- Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lawsuit in 3...2...1...
Doesn't matter if it's legal or not. They'll still sue. - logic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"democracy seems to take ages"
I'm sure there's a bad government joke in there somewhere. - GodsHand, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Democracy is buggy as hell.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why is it called the "Democracy" player? It just seems kind of a werid name...
from their FAQ ""Democracy is developed by the Participatory Culture Foundation""
lol
""But won't it make for a totally awesome headline?
"MPAA SUES DEMOCRACY"""
lmfao - jayf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I bet the MPAA will come up with an app or virus called Communism to wipe this out.
- Elsidox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why not just use utorrent/azureus with the RSS handlers.
- schulty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Works great for me on my Mac. For those who are getting slow dwonloads on a Mac (not sure about PCs), the bittorrent client in Democracy (BitTornado) is using ports 10000-60000 randomly. I found this in Democracy/Contents/Resources/Python/site-packages/dl_daemon/download.py. Lines 53 and 54 have the settings for the minimum and maximum port.
Pretty large range IMHO, but you could change that to be smaller I guess. My Mac is the DMZ host in my net, so it did not really matter, but if you have specific ports forwarded in your network, change the min/max to suit you. I am getting about 30 k/s for a download that I started 10 mins ago. Not great, but I can deal... - Zipp425, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What about videora? doesnt it do the same thing?
- misterpony, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BTW, good work with the 'How-To'! Also, you gotta like that's it open source.
Here's a link to the BoingBoing article on The Democracy Player: http://www.boingboing.net/2006/02/21/democracy_a_new_plat.html - dmron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, Democracy is buggy as hell. Good idea but totally not even close to being ready for a beta release. I'd say pre-alpha at best. I'll check back in 6 months when it might not make me want to kill myself.
- utexaspunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0just use uTorrent's RSS reader and get feeds miniRSS.org, then play the files in whatever player you want.
- Killgore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yer been done before with many other apps and websites.
No digg - jacinto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0On windows, democracy saves videos to a folder it creates called democracy inside My Videos.
in other words,
C:Documents and SettingsUser nameMy DocumentsMy VideosDemocracy - RajAtWork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Given the times we live in, "Democracy Player" sounds a lot like "Victory Gin" kind of name to me ;-)
- Bullsnot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Utorrent > RSS feeds to automaticaly download shows, limit options to make sure you get the right shows! > xbox media center to watch the shows after utorrent completes them and automatically moves the completed file to the folder you choose for completed files.
- raada, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great idea, but crappy software. Cant watch anything, just hangs and crashes when I close it.
- g30ph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's still bittorrent, which is still slower than clicking reload on the newsgroup til the show appears so I can get it at 6.7mbps. That translates to 7 minutes for a 30 minute show like the Daily Show.
- neopran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OMG
I love this so much
btw where do the videos get saved too ? - MrTea, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@GodsHand
what about this app? :P - itoldyouso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0glad there is something better to do with the democracy player.
but surely (hope you mind me calling you that) this is wrong, immoral and maybe illegal ??
+++++++++++++++++++++digg
great story and great how to's - Jules, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually with normal feeds democracy works well, but it has major dl problems with this technique.
- diskopo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There's also another app called "Ted" that does the same thing (or so I hear). Fans may want to give that a shot.
- knightblade2oo4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0im testing it out... im getting 2kb/s on a 2 mbit DSL....
- dmoney06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Where does democracy store the files? In the actual program itself instead of an external folder?
- knightblade2oo4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i'd imagine they would be saved to c:program filesdemocracy player
but they aren't - thidranki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0On my Mac (thx Spotlight) they're saved to Movies/DTV
This program is AWESOME btw! - NumbCore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How legal is this?
- zokra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice software!
Became even better with a custom tvtorrent.info php to rss parser :D - JaggedEdge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0how many other people got an email out of butt ***** nowhere about this?, I know i did and i havent the slightest on how i ended up in theyre mailing list.
- ComputerNap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sexy.
- Timjacobs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can't you do this with the howard stern show?
- urbanaut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@thidranki
I was able to get the House feeds by searching on tvRSS for House with a space after it (house%20). That seems to work if you just want House MD, not Desperate Housewives or whatever, lol. - theMangledOne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I've tried Democracy Player, and to tell you the truth, I don't like the absence of an option where I can store my downloaded video files. And it becomes buggy if I tried to cancel a automatic download.
Get FireAnt from http://www.fireant.tv/ or use uTorrent or Azureus RSS Feed plugin. - petedee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It seems ok although i'll really need to try it out properly, still a great idea though.
Dugg + 1 - Rsulliv1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0pro/con vs TVTAD? or is this just the new kid on the block?
- techlinks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"will make you wonder why you’re still paying your cable bill."
Oh...maybe so people will keep on making television? :O Ever think of that. I don't think there's too many pro-bono actors out there. - unknowned, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0tryin it out now....looks like it downloads real slow.....1kb/s down from usu. 60 in IE
- underburn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a great looking app, Ill look into it further when its stable.
- bogaut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ah this is where videora comes in handy, with auto conversion for ipod
- alai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To archanoid, yes this is illegal and the producers of the show dont make any money this way, but thats really indicitive of a failing buisness model more than anything else. People want shows like this on demand, the fact that so many people use software like bittorrent it is a testament to that. There is a way for TV producers to make a buck off this distribution method they just have to figure out how. As it is they arn't even trying, instead they are trying to force everyone to stick with traditional distribution methods. Not very forward thinking and if they don't change they will go out of buisness and maybe we will end up watching public access. Here's hoping they adapt.
- zokra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've made it alot easyer now with http://www.nesjo.no/rss/
- archanoid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I keep paying my cable bill because that's the legal way to watch HBO. If I could sign a deal directly with HBO to get their content some other way, I'd stop paying for cable. Of course, HBO's starting to piss me off with their draconian views on Digital Restriction Management.
Aw, screw it. I'll just stop paying for cable altogether and download shows with commercials already edited out...then, once the advertisers realize nobody's watching their ads and the subscription services realize nobody's paying for their content...I can go back to watching public access 24/7. Man, those amateurs on public access make some quality shows. I can't wait to catch the new episode of "LARP at the Renaissance Fair!" - leo45, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Demo- what?
- anjinash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Democracy sucks"
Welcome to Digg, Mr. Cheney! - tsunamisteve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this needs iSquint integration! all the same benefits, but videos would be iPod ready... (wishing)
- jnewland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whoops. You're right.
- thidranki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0torrentspy RSS feeds dont work
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why am I paying my cable bill? Because it's legal. Additionally, if I only watch shows on the net (esp. with commercials removed) the shows I watch will not generate sufficient ratings and they'll be cancelled.
If the techno-savvy watch shows this way, then the only shows which will generate sufficient viewership (and thus revenue) are shows that appeal to the non-techno-savvy.
What are you going to watch when the only shows left are Matlock clones? -
