- Jawshie, on 12/26/2007, -4/+241I wish Digg was a nerdy site again...
- 0ceanic, on 12/26/2007, -4/+69this is digg. not aol.
- tastypastry, on 12/26/2007, -4/+56The people digging you down probably don't know what Digg use to be like. It was ALL tech!
- roastedbagel, on 12/26/2007, -37/+71My how the times have changed. If this title were on the front page of Digg circa 2005, it would be like hell freezing over, I understand Digg is a very diffferent site from back then, but still, I just had to laugh to myself when seeing this story in the top 10
On a side note...Who gets a brand new computer with Linux preinstalled? - ninja0, on 12/26/2007, -3/+25i'd get a new computer with linux preinstalled.
- radialturkey, on 12/26/2007, -1/+19I don't use a mouse gesture program, but I do Strokeit.
- catalysis, on 12/26/2007, -3/+20Wow, seeing all these articles about getting a new computer for christmas convinces me that we are truly living in two different Americas.
- inactive, on 12/26/2007, -4/+19porn downloads faster with the network guide at speedguide.net.
Keep your video drivers up-to-date (ati.com/nvidia.com/etc) to view porn at the cleanest and artifact-free resolution. - OfficeMagic, on 12/26/2007, -8/+23They are shipping Dells with Ubuntu now...
http://digg.com/linux_unix/Dell_now_shipping_Gutsy ... - ninja0, on 12/26/2007, -5/+20fanboy. you sit on a throne of lies.
- MiamiGuy, on 12/26/2007, -1/+16No CCleaner? pshaw
- ninja0, on 12/26/2007, -0/+14you have no idea what you are talking about. if you get artifacts from watching videos, you need a new video card.
- ninja0, on 12/26/2007, -4/+17yes
- Toast1185, on 12/26/2007, -2/+11Nah. Even after you get the fresh HD, you still need to tweak your computer. Batch scripts, productivity software, registry tweaks, entertainment software (Foobar2000!), etc... If you're just running Microsoft defaults then what is the point of being a nerd?
- Toast1185, on 12/26/2007, -0/+9Honestly, I agree. You can get a decent computer subsidized by all of the crap the put on their HD. Wipe it clean, get the bare minimum and then make it great. I don't really enjoy mounting the MOBO or the CPU (thermal grease, uck). I'm sure they have the highest margins on their 'gaming rigs'. Building off their basic systems is actually a pretty good deal
- tyywebb, on 12/26/2007, -2/+10I was just thinking if this article is useful to you, what are you doing on digg?
- Dotcommer, on 12/26/2007, -1/+9Hmm.. I believe it isn't a hardware problem at all... its a...splooging problem, and those artifacts...well... My suggestion would be to get some of that non stick stuff and spray it on your screen and keyboard.
Merry Christmas. - moulin1, on 12/26/2007, -0/+8If you can run windows out of the box without modding or deleting half its garbage, you have less gag reflex than me.
- jrtcs, on 12/26/2007, -2/+10Gaim? It's called Pidgin now. Did anyone notice the date Windows section of this article posted? '10:00 AM ON FRI MAR 30 2007'
- Verdanic, on 12/26/2007, -1/+9*sigh*
- Verdanic, on 12/26/2007, -0/+8Much, MUCH less so. I remember being on here in '04 briefly and then in '05, - it's sad how few hardware stories we see nowadays. And yea, this is a second account, the first was banned when I submitted an event photographer's gallery that had *gasp* nudity in it. Now we have stories centered around topless chicks playing the Wii with no issue.
- daGUY, on 12/26/2007, -0/+8Could Lifehacker make their article titles a little bigger? I'm having trouble reading them since they're only 47px.
- inactive, on 12/26/2007, -5/+12The best Tweak for Vista is installing a app called Windows XP SP2
- ninja0, on 12/26/2007, -0/+6er... what?
- MattBD, on 12/26/2007, -0/+5The thing is, how do you define a PC? Modern Macs use Intel processors and can run Windows, they just look nice and come with OS X preinstalled. How is that not a PC?
If I were to get a Sony Vaio (which looks just as nice as a Mac) and install Ubuntu on it, that would be as different to a PC as a Mac is, and probably more like a Mac than a PC. Since Linux is a Unix-like OS, it would have the same kind of advantages as OS X.
Point is, it's completely unfair to classify everything that isn't a Mac as a PC. One running Linux (or, for that matter, any other OS such as PC-BSD or Open Solaris) is a completely different beast to one running Windows. That kind of either/or thinking is seriously flawed. - yujie, on 12/26/2007, -2/+7I format and do a fresh install of the OS with less crapware
- josh1413, on 12/26/2007, -0/+5I liked the Ubuntu recommendations, however I highly don't recommend installing automatix.
- DevinOlsen, on 12/26/2007, -1/+6Am I the only one here who uses Strokeit (mouse gesture program) and YZdock (equivalent of mac doc, but for PC) ?
- khellendros1984, on 12/26/2007, -0/+5*hands ninja0 two "m"s.* I think you forgot those.
- solid12345, on 12/26/2007, -1/+6It is a shame people bash these articles. Not every computer user is a power user who knows what they are doing. How many of you nerds know how to change your own oil?
- Tetraca, on 12/26/2007, -2/+7Next on Digg: How to get the little bar to come out of the start square.
- MadOtaku, on 12/26/2007, -0/+4Which is tweaking.
- Haplo, on 12/26/2007, -2/+6I "just" installed Ubuntu on my brand new notebook.
Next I am going to try to get a refund from Acer for Windows Vista Starter (see: http://johnbokma.com/mexit/2007/12/22/ ). They already confirmed that this is possible. Say no to Windows tax if you don't use it. - wolferz, on 12/26/2007, -2/+6Look:
You can build a computer buy hand, install all the software you want and only the software you want, and provide all of your own support, only have a 30day or so warranty on most of your parts, and STILL pay more.
Or...
You can buy a Dell and reinstall with the provided Windows CD but not put the rest of their crap back on the computer. This way costs less than most homebuilt or even other OEM machines, has a 1 year warranty default, takes less than half as long to get it going including the windows reinstall, and is still one of the best pre-built computers on the market. If you kinda sorta know what you're doing you can get a rock solid computer with a safety net and no annoying crap ware and yet STILL save money and time.
Quite frankly any one that makes a fuss about the stuff Dell computers come with is simply flagging themselves as not knowing much about the computer industry. Every OEM installs crapware on their computers. Most install more than Dell does. It is one of the methods they use to push their prices down below the actual cost of the parts by having the software developers pay for part of your computer for you in return for pre-installation on that computer.
But no... we will just ignore all that cause we want to be part of the Bash Dell group that "everyone" on the internet belongs to now. Most such people will instead ether buy an HP with three times as much crap ware or a Compaq that has a 1 in 3 chance of being defective out of the box. A few will build their own computers but end up making novice mistakes so they end up with mismatched ram or one ram stick in a dual channel machine or getting fingerprints on the top of the cpu or some other mistake that degrades the performance or stability of the their computer while simultaneously they bragging about how awesome they are for building their (defective) computer. Meanwhile those of us who have been around the block a few times roll our eyes and shake our heads partially out of embarrassment for having once been so idiotic ourselves and partially out of frustration knowing there is not a damn thing in the world we can do to help such people see how they are making fools of themselves.
Then of course there are people like me whose jaded souls still contain enough naivety to let us think pointing out the ridiculous pointlessness of the "dell computers come with crap ware on them" gripe might actually make a difference - kaytrio, on 12/26/2007, -0/+4Thanks for the information...
- Feldforschung, on 12/26/2007, -2/+6good old times...
- haterrade, on 12/26/2007, -1/+5insert ignorant comment about how the best vista tweak is another computer because vista sucks even though i've never used it
- ninja0, on 12/26/2007, -1/+4Windows professional? Doesn't take much to become that.
And I dugg you down with the linux remark. Linux isn't for cheapskates. I used windows for years, HACKED (which means free), until I decided I wanted to do more with my computer, and have a more stable system, then I switched to linux. which is also free. So what difference did it make to me? I still spent no money either way. - MacParrot, on 12/26/2007, -0/+3It can be cheaper to build your own as long as you consider the time you spent researching what parts to buys, ordering them, putting them together, testing the configuration, installing the OS, and so on to be worthless. There are many people who enjoy putting together a computer and more power to them, but I don't really think that putting your own computer together makes you leet or special. It's not like it's extraordinarily difficult.
- obxjdt, on 12/26/2007, -1/+4Dugg it for being on the up & up, but if you read Digg.com, chances are that you already know this stuff.
- MadOtaku, on 12/26/2007, -1/+4You can do all that stuff quite easily. For burning data discs, I've used Burn (my favorite and only one I use now), Toast, and Disk Utility. I'm sure there are more, but Burn is the third one I found, and I loved it enough to keep it.
When it comes to tweaking your system, OnyX, TinkerTool, one of many dock-changers, Hierarchical Dock, Shape Shifter, Candy bar, and more than I care to list all provide you with customization; you can always just use the command line too. - yeskia, on 12/26/2007, -0/+3You do not know how much my life has improved after learning about your computer.
- PunkHop, on 12/26/2007, -0/+3Dugg for Launchy.
I love you, Launchy. - radialturkey, on 12/26/2007, -0/+3Meh... I dugg you for your links, but I doubt users from recent generations, being surrounded by tech, would take 6 months to be able to get around control panel... and Linux is perfect for computer users that like to pop the hood of their operating systems and see what's going on, not just for professionals.
- inactive, on 12/26/2007, -0/+330 day warranty? i get better warranty with custom builds. 5 years on ram and HDD, 3 for Mobo, for the Monitor and so on and so forth.
- radialturkey, on 12/26/2007, -0/+3No Spam, thank you.
- mikewhite314, on 12/26/2007, -0/+3yeah, seriously, and to boot, kids are way too spoiled. I live in an upper middle-class family and my parents would balk at buying even an eeePC for me
- moulin1, on 12/26/2007, -0/+2I have been using gestures in Opera for ten years but never saw strokeit. I'm going to give it a try and thanks for the tip. And for those who put down the article and DO, “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.” Abraham Lincoln
