  • Pacificblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well I still use both, but what i don't like Gtalk is that its still not supporting 'visibility mode' so at night time all my collg. frnds, colleagues and all the orkut frnd's list is active. So it gets pretty tiresome to avoid every ' hi', 'whats up stuff'.

    Well simplicity is what make Gtalk work, i guess, just like Google.

  • lcohiomatty86, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3while yahoo messenger is very bloated and just kinda stinky.. one thing it gets VERY right.. is picture sharing.. when thats enabled, a special section in the chat window opens up (it makes the window alot larger), and from there, its just drag and drop.. VERY easy and convenient.. espescially compared to AIM's manually selecting files through a "open file" menu

    Emoticons are strictly a function of the client. Psi is the most popular Jabber client, and it has emoticon support (though turned off by default). Who cares if GT doesn't support it when plenty of other clients do work with GT and you're encouraged to bring your own client if the default they provide doesn't suit your needs?

    Google Talk doesn't run a MUC (Multi-User Chat), but many other Jabber servers reachable via Google's Jabber server do. In Psi, while connected to Google Talk, check out the server browser and try browsing to ursine.ca, jabber.ru or jabber.org. It doesn't matter that they're not on the same server, the connection will still be made. Plenty of chats out there. The same Use The Service Browser, Luke trick can sometimes turn up other useful transports than just the MUC, such as gateways to the Obsolete Four networks, IRC, as well as RSS news aggregation (digg via Jabber/GT anyone?) depending on which server you're looking at.

    For chatting i feel yahoo is always cool, atleast from a non-techy perspective with its smileys etc. Google doesnt have such cool smileys or chat rooms etc.

This is not the right place to push your favorite OS... it's an article about instant messaging, not operating sytems. I just want to add, however, that Adium is a great choice if you have a Mac.
