- dannyboy3020, on 12/30/2008, -5/+79Thanks PC World. I'm not sure my tiny brain could have figured this one out.
This is Digg...and it used to a technology oriented site. COME ON! - snaglepuss, on 12/30/2008, -4/+78That isn't 8 steps. And it's all common sense drudgery.
- designbydave, on 12/30/2008, -3/+63When first installing Windows setup 2 partitions. One for the OS/Applications and one for your documents. That way when it comes time to reinstall (that time will come) you don't have to worry about backup. Although you should always have your ***** backed anyways though, right? RIGHT!?!
.../runs to back ***** up - wowHaster, on 12/30/2008, -7/+54what the hell is this crap?! I expect better when I click on a tech article on digg.
- banthis, on 12/30/2008, -2/+47I have 3 common sense steps.
1. Burn and save family pics.
2. Backup "Stupid *****" folder.
3. Pop in the Windows XP CD (Pirated) and follow the instructions on the screen. - joeyjoejoe99, on 12/29/2008, -18/+53Linux Users = more annoying than apple users
- NerveBand, on 12/30/2008, -8/+38Get this ***** off Digg. Seriously.
- branndon, on 12/30/2008, -7/+36http://www.pcworld.com/printable/article/id,155995 ...
I hate multi page articles. - jenshik, on 12/30/2008, -3/+27Linux *fanboys* = more annoying than Apple *fanboys*.
We're not all fanboys. - thankyoupatrick, on 12/30/2008, -7/+30this is *****.
- Topher06, on 12/29/2008, -16/+38Wow, you think you are so smart for installing Linux, but then make the same stupid anti-Windows comment. Epic fail.
- BenBenMan, on 12/30/2008, -2/+22Of course DOS is obsolete ... but the most recent versions of Windows aren't based on DOS.
- Sliver85, on 12/30/2008, -0/+16"Beyond that if you let someone build you a "custom pc" AKA a pice of ***** mutt"
Seriously? Are you calling Dell's and HP's better than a custom rig?
What the hell is wrong with you? - BloodWenis, on 12/30/2008, -3/+18You want to know the single biggest thing to reloading a PC: Getting a copy of you NIC driver saved somewhere other than your hard drive.
- Trigononamous, on 12/30/2008, -0/+14"Stupid *****"? I hide mine in my printer drivers folder.
- estacado, on 12/30/2008, -6/+20Wow a "just install Linux" comment in first place. The successful Linux troll is successful. Congratulations.
- Defiant001, on 12/30/2008, -0/+13Dug because its exactly my method :|
- danthepiercer, on 12/30/2008, -0/+12are you ***** kidding?!
352 people dugg this?
how about 'how to burn a cd in 3 easy steps'... - conna, on 12/30/2008, -1/+13Good advice but take it a step farther and put your documents on a separate disk. Some disk or OS errors can jack up partitions leaving them unreadable or mountable.
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -1/+12burying you.
- DatDudeWiggs, on 12/30/2008, -8/+18These comments suck
- roebeet, on 12/30/2008, -2/+12I'm a Linux user.... and I'm burying these "just use Linux" comments. Please don't judge us by the comments of a few.
- ethana2, on 12/30/2008, -1/+11'Go spend $3000 on a new machine, btw I'm better than you'
vs
'Here, I'll help you install Ubuntu in a dual boot, call me if you need help with anything'
We may be more annoying than mac users, but is a mac user going to offer to spend their time helping you turn your machine into a hackintosh? - sporktek, on 12/30/2008, -0/+9Needless complication and opens the door to mistakes that will leave you, possibly, with, say, two installations of Windows and no docs down the road. Best solution:
Leave Documents and Settings alone, it's where it needs to be, third party apps, regardless of how poorly they're coded should be able to handle them and you don't add any complication to the mix.
Install a 2nd physical hard drive, or use an external drive and set up something like synctoy or other automated sync/backup utility to keep up-to-date copies of your My Documents, Local Settings and Application Data folders (or Documents, Pictures, Music, Contacts, etc. folders if on Vista) on the 2nd drive.
Now you've got an actual "backup" which is a redundant copy of your files on a seperate physical drive mechanism which will protect you from drive failures, AND you still have things in a standard location. If, for whatever reason, you brainfart (and yes, even the pros do from time to time) and reload Windows onto your backup drive, as long as you haven't touched your original installation, you can still recover your documents from it once you discover what you've done, just so long as you don't jump the gun and redo the reload process again onto the correct drive before recovering them.
Of course, the next logical step in safer backups is to have some sort of offsite backup, but that's for another thread. - FlyingCaveman, on 12/30/2008, -0/+8me too.
I also have a "Stupid *****" folder - ethana2, on 12/30/2008, -1/+9I totally called this before I clicked the link to this story.
Internet, have you ever let me down? - zebbers, on 12/30/2008, -1/+9Because Digg is like that unfortunately
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -6/+14Damn, and I thought for once we'd make it through 50 comments without a retard..
Protip: Use whatever OS you like and /shut the hell up/. - etruscan, on 12/30/2008, -0/+7my documents\New Folder
- branndon, on 12/30/2008, -6/+13Why in the hell would I get buried for posting a link to the article on one page!?!?!?!?
- fandyboy, on 12/30/2008, -0/+7Yeah the separate disk approach works peachy.
- fandyboy, on 12/30/2008, -0/+7No building rockets for you then.
- SonnyW, on 12/30/2008, -0/+7Exactly. Where are the lolcats?
- Toshibi, on 12/30/2008, -5/+12Yeah, but to be fair, Crysis won't play on a PC either.
- Murdats, on 12/30/2008, -6/+12I don't know, there are much, much less of them.
they generally squeak from the back "use linux" and talk about how this year they are going to break their 2-3% market share. - ethana2, on 12/30/2008, -0/+6"No matter what kind of trouble your computer is having, someone will probably tell you to reformat your hard drive, reinstall Windows and your applications, and then restore your documents, photos, and music from a backup."
As a dog returns to its vomit.. you should seriously question the guy who gives you that advice before finding out what your application compatibility needs are. - joe122370, on 12/30/2008, -0/+6step 1: throw PC in trash
step 2: done - inactive, on 12/30/2008, -2/+8No. This is sparta !!
...

- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -0/+5No results found for "Reinstall and Restore Your mac".
- antistupid, on 12/30/2008, -0/+5This is what happens when Digg merges with Facebook.
- Ommatidia, on 12/30/2008, -0/+5You are retarded.
I don't even feel like explaining why; you probably wouldn't understand, anyway. - coldwind777, on 12/30/2008, -0/+5OH GOD OH GOD WHAT'S STEP 4!?
- cougar618, on 12/30/2008, -1/+5... something similar can be done in windows as well.. whats your point?
- BillDauterive, on 12/30/2008, -1/+5I miss the days where you used a Boot Disk instead of a Boot CD.
- cougar618, on 12/30/2008, -2/+6Come on, this ***** is so basic you, lolcat, could do it.
You forgot your commas. - Awspire, on 12/30/2008, -4/+8I use Acronis True Image to create a restore image and Acronis Disk Director for parttion management and zeroing out.
Basic method:
1. Create two partitions on my HDD. One for the OS and Apps other for storage.
2. Install OS and Apps. Update everything, then configure my personal settings.
3. Defragment and create image. Either store image on storage partition and/or external media.
When the time comes to restore, pop in the True image/Disk Director boot disc. Select Disk Director to erase my OS partition, then zero it out. Create new OS partition, format, reboot from boot disc again, this time selecting True Image to restore my image from either my storage partition or external media.
Takes about an hour to restore, considering I create my OS partition at 120GB, which takes at least 30 minutes to zero out, and another 20 minutes to restore the image.
In the end, depending on how many apps and personal settings you like configured, an image restore saves me about six hours if not more compared to having to format, install, update, etc.. - Testiculese, on 12/30/2008, -0/+4Or a good sized thumbdrive
- roebeet, on 12/30/2008, -0/+4You win! Well said.
- Defiant001, on 12/30/2008, -0/+4Seconded and dugg
