- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+185Has digg been taken over by stories that ask questions instead of saying statements?
- Xageroth, on 10/12/2007, -17/+167I'm being paid to agree. (jk)

Were all paid to digg this story to the front page. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+92As much as I agree with the guy who wrote this article.. I honestly don't think this deserves front page coverage. All all he's doing is stating the obvious. This site has been overrun by kids.. that's what the problem is.
- TheDrunkMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -31/+96***** you. You're wrong because you are stupid and your mom is a whore.
What was this article about anyway? - NuttyAvatar, on 10/12/2007, -8/+56Six months ago, the user comments used to be though provoking. Now its more of a thought revoking experience. I used to enjoy digg for the user comments which I dont get anymore. Hope it improves with time
- PhantomBantam, on 10/12/2007, -8/+55I think the worst part about the digg comment system is that the less popular opinion gets dugg down into oblivion, no matter how coherent it is. In other words, what was meant to censor trolls, is being used as a public opinion meter.
- eddieo, on 10/12/2007, -8/+49Geez, I know it was a lame attempt at humor but c'mon, was it that bad?!
Anyway, I actually do agree with the article. For example, there were some extremely bad and tasteless comments on many of the James Kim submissions.
@ webber007, I won't digg you down either. I can take my share of criticism... you are correct. - bobbyi, on 10/12/2007, -8/+48What's happened to digg is the same thing that happened to slashdot. In the early days, people were constructive and had good discussions, but as it got popular, it was overrun with trolls and noise.
- CrazyForSW, on 10/12/2007, -4/+40Welcome to the internet.
- Dweller99, on 10/12/2007, -4/+33There was a time on Digg where people seemed to focus on attacking the message, not the messenger. Those times have passed.
- tomboy501, on 10/12/2007, -11/+37I like my slice of society non-filtered, non-G-rated, real, raw, take-the-good-with-the-bad and utterly uncensored - uncensored by me...or anyone else. I'm a big girl. I can handle it.
Swear words aren't the end of the world. And dissenting opinion is the spice of life. - Matic, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26It's because everyone on the internet thinks they are comedians.
- lightningrod220, on 10/12/2007, -10/+31And in other news, as Digg is being overrun by little brats, slashdot's comments have returned to being useful and intelligent again. All of the irritating little trolls move together from one site to another. Now if only they'd all go to Fark, I wouldn't have to worry about them anymore...
- orientis, on 10/12/2007, -10/+27Agreed completely. People have a knee-jerk reaction and digg down anything they don't agree with. My diggs relate more to style and delivery than content. If someone makes a stupid pun or a joke, that is timed or aimed well, I give it a digg. If someone makes a coherent point, or an amusing speech, I'll give it a digg. The only things I digg down are really bad jokes and comments that don't provide any kind of contribution beyond negativity.
To digg someone down because you disagree with them is censorship at it's finest. Direct from the people. - orientis, on 10/12/2007, -7/+23Perhaps then you shouldn't digg down people who use swear words, just use the profanity filter. Just because you find those words unacceptable, doesn't mean others have the same mental taboos.
- dunezone, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22Ill be honest, 75% of my comments are jokes, and the other 25% are there to add to the story. I think comedy is better.
- bigtrouble77, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20I agree that this is the biggest problem. I recently, and very politely, inquired about a controversial and sensitive issue... I got dugg down to oblivion because the mentality was to condemn everyone that had a certain point of view. This happens so much in the liberal/conservative slanted political articles that it almost makes the commentary useless.
- Scatropolis, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17or family guy split up into a thousand ten second clips.
- almostmanda, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21The best way to combat this is to go to an article that talks about women, gays, illegal immigrants, or Muslims. Block all of the people who make seriously offensive comments (look for -50 or less). Do this a few times and the digg comments section almost becomes bearable.
- ynggrsshppr, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Here it is, the simple truth.
- zionKing, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13What, don't you ever make jokes that also add to the story?
- jaycliche, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15"It's easy to get dug down-
Just insult Apple or Nintendo."
Or better yet claim that people on Digg are a certain way or another. That will drop you down pretty quick...though of course this story made it to the front. - scoobydiesel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12I agree i see more rude comments now, but some good are still there, just have to look :)
- kanavulator, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13The first things that come to mind are the articles detailing the deaths of Steve Irwin and James Kim.

The kind of ignorant comments that show up on the pages like "Good Riddance" and "He had it coming." and "What a pussy"...ugh. I'm fifteen and even I cringe at such despicable remarks. - Scatropolis, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14Dugg for the story, but I have to agree. I've been enjoying the comments less and less as time goes on.
- mscbuck, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14I totally agree with the comment. I used to love Digg. Now I can barely stand it because of the comments.. However, I hate it more for the "OMG FUNNY YOUTUBE VIDEO LETS PUT IT ON DIGG" news stories than the ignorant and non-comedic comments
- bansai, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13Welcome to Social Networking
- ogden, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14I think an equal problem is the fascists that mod down *ANYTHING* that challenges the techno-liberal group-think.
Unless you think MS Sucks, Apple is God, Linux is god, conservatives suck and palestine is good... you don't have a voice on digg.
There is no room for intellectual honesty here. The mod system is being abused to punish opinion as opposed to promoting debate. - friend18, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12I totally just rang Kevin Rose' doorbell and ran away.
- OneAndOnlySnob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7You guys act like this is a new thing. I remember about 7 months ago I was making apparently prophetic comments about how the mod system encourages people to have kneejerk reactions to every single post they read and how it was drawing a bad element to the site. But of course people were like IT'S DEMOCRACY STUPID IT MEANS THEY DON'T LIKE THAT COMMENT. Lots of good, well written, well thought out comments got modded down for disagreeing with the herd, and if anything it's gotten worse with time.
- fleetskeet, on 10/12/2007, -23/+28It wasn't "hooligans" per se, but rather "rapscallions".
- alexvalentine, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Digg comments have always been less insightful than say Slashdot. Just look at the average size of the comments, its so easy for someone to fire off a 1 liner that has zero insight. As far as the abuse, well that comes with the popularity.

I think the real problem with Digg is the signal to noise ratio of the stories. 80% of the stories on the main page are not even news. Links to blogs, links to old videos, Links to 10 Apple rumors/day, its simply crap voted up by the blinded masses while the real news gets left behind. Java 6 was released today, yet no story on the main page, but if Steve Job's finds corn in his $$$$ it gets 1000 diggs. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6At least not on the topics of Global Warming, Intelligent Design, or Abortion. No matter where you are this usually resorts to name calling.
- corsairstw, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8People can get away with much more offensive stuff on the Internet than in real life. I mean, in real life, if someone starts shouting curse words everywhere in a public forum, they will get in trouble.
On the internet, there's no penalty.
The only solution is for people to police themselves like we do here on Digg. Once the flamers learn that their comments are getting buried, they may rethink their ways. More sites should have a user-driven comment area like Digg. It encourages healthy comments. - pahoehoe, on 10/12/2007, -10/+14@anita
I don't think that curse words should be the sole metric when deciding to digg up or down. I have come across many comments on this site and others (and during real conversation, for that matter) that are cogent, relevant, and/or funny, and they happen to include curse words. The filter is provided to those who are really offended by it. - Scatropolis, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8because it can't possibly be both.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Is "Maverick Menthols" some sort of new slang for "*****"?
- firepig, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I disagree. I am a very recent, new member, and i have worked hard to make my comments and posts of the highest quality. I've already found half a dozen of quality people whom I've added to my friend's list. This from just one week of activity. Please check out my profile and welcome me to digg. Thank you.
- dokbeast7, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8So, based on the amount of replies to this comment that have been dugg down you could say there may be some truth to this.
- heaintheavy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Trust me, it isn't just Digg. It's everywhere.
Just submit something about Islam and all the fascists come out of the woodwork to spew hate. - Blabster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Gethsemane, you are the true hooligan here!
- OneAndOnlySnob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Java 6 was released? Holy crap.
I think this will stand in my mind as the ultimate failure of Digg in my mind. I came to Digg because it always had it's thumb on the pulse of tech news. And I've watched it decline in quality and in quantity of tech news. Now it's completely failed. This, to me, marks the point when Digg is over.
But you know I'll be here tomorrow because I'd have to be constructive at work if it weren't for the internet... - TroubleInMind, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5You can't stop people from making asses of themselves. Why bother? There is no way to control people while allowing a diverse dialogue. Part of that is putting up with the noise. And I like some of the witty ones anyway.
- harmlessinc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Just about doubled my block list so far and seems the answer is yes.
- jsp317, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I love digg despite all the bashing. It's a cool site. I may not like your point of view but you are entitled to it. Yes we have to deal with kids. That use language there mother has never heard out of there mouth. Parent's need to watch there kids on line activity. Digg has grown so big that this was bound to happen. Digging for life.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5In Soviet Russia Slashdot Diggs You!
- Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -17/+20Do hooligans exist in Digg? Yes, this is a fact of life, and especially of the internet. However, they definitely have NOT taken over. This fact proves the genius of community moderating systems, and the Digg 'digging' systems and the thumbs up/thumbs down system. It works!
I think this article is *****. When I first joined digg, I actually remember seeing more 'hooligan' like comments than I do now. This is is an example of elitism, people who were here longest thing the new people are causing all the problems. That is BS - jackhole, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6"not true. i just dugg you down and i read your whole comment!"
Me too. Well... most of it. -
