- icemanGFX, on 04/03/2009, -11/+37The headline for this article is ridiculous, good article, but GIMP will never replace Photoshop lol.
Photoshop brutally pwns most graphics programs.... - jerrycan, on 04/03/2009, -2/+24Other programs that "brutally pwned" at some point in time....
Word Perfect
Lotus 123
Dbase - inactive, on 04/03/2009, -3/+22GIMP doesn't need to replace Photoshop.
- MisteR2, on 04/03/2009, -0/+17 A few things need to change with the Gimp for me to see it as an equal to photoshop.
1. Smoother brush strokes with custom brushes. Right now it looks like it stamps a lot while following your brush stroke.
2. Better brush management. Not loading all brushes when starting the program.
3. Layer Groups.
These three things would help immensely. - Speedy7, on 04/03/2009, -0/+15The thing that I like about GIMP over Photoshop, being a student, is the fact that it is completely FREE.
And I can live with the difficulty of using it.
Photoshop wins on usage and power though, but I cannot afford it at all. - BloggerSavvy, on 04/03/2009, -1/+11Well done. This is very handy, nice job! :)
- Vadi0, on 04/03/2009, -1/+11That is quite handy.
- bigteebo, on 04/03/2009, -3/+12Usually an acronym in an acronym is a bad idea, because they will ask you what GNU stands for. Then you tell them(gnu's not unix), then they will ask you what it IS.
For better Linux acceptance, stop giving your FOSS projects stupid names. I can't even make sense of half of them on SourceForge. - coheedcollapse, on 04/03/2009, -1/+10I've found that unless you're editing twelve raw files at the same time, Photoshop runs pretty well even on a mediocre computer. I have a crappy $300 laptop (1.8 Dual core with 1 gig of ram and onboard graphics) that I use to edit and send photos out in the field and it works fine.
- Speedy7, on 04/03/2009, -5/+13And also most computer setups...
- mishaneah, on 04/03/2009, -6/+14CHANGE THE NAME!
To something more professional, please. - coheedcollapse, on 04/03/2009, -0/+7You should contact your college's software center. A lot of places now have a deal with Adobe where you can download photoshop for free and use it as long as you're a student. My cousin at IU recently picked up the whole CS4 suite for completely free. He just downloaded it off of the school site.
After that, I can't help you, haha. - Swipecat, on 04/03/2009, -0/+7GIMP's reliance on a good external window manager does mean that it works well in Linux, but can seem a bit clunky in Windows. I understand that there's a paneled single-window alternative display for GIMP being worked on, with Windows in mind.
- skeptictank, on 04/04/2009, -0/+5And brutally pwns your wallet unless you're getting a copy from TPB. Gimp isn't photoshop but it's free for Christ's sake.
- arbulus, on 04/03/2009, -6/+11Buried because it's impossible. GIMP and Photoshop are not even in the same universe of capability.
Further the "CMYK Support" isn't. It simply exports a file to a CMYK separation, it doesn't actually give you a working CMYK environment when your are creating a file. And it also only works half-assed. Which basically means it's completely useless if you work in a print medium. - CoryTrevor, on 04/03/2009, -4/+9By closing it and opening Photoshop :P
- jameson5, on 04/03/2009, -2/+6Check the article...
- illepic, on 04/03/2009, -3/+7I love GIMP and I love FOSS. I'm writing this via a Linux operating system. However, there is this deep, irrational hope within me that, someday, Adobe will port all their products to Linux. I'd pay TWICE what they cost in Windows to use them on an open source operating system. I love GIMP, but I love Photoshop much, much more.
- Speedy7, on 04/03/2009, -0/+4Nice, I will try that.
Kudos. - rub3nmv, on 04/03/2009, -0/+4You can use Photoshop via Wine, it works pretty nice.
- boazg, on 04/03/2009, -0/+4too much work. can't all this come with gimp to begin with?
- Ch3n3yTh3D1ck, on 04/03/2009, -13/+17never. going. to. happen.
- DBeta, on 04/03/2009, -0/+4The newer versions of GIMP allow you to set the toolbars as utility windows, which means that Windows handles them just fine.
- DBeta, on 04/03/2009, -0/+3I never use custom brushes, but I completely agree on the layer groups. There is a plugin for it, but it really needs to be a stock feature.
- jameson5, on 04/03/2009, -0/+3If you read the article, it's about how you can make Gimp more like PS by customizing it and adding some plugins. The default setup is definitely a far cry from PS functionality.
- Kyderdog, on 04/03/2009, -2/+5So how Do I Do CMYK In gimp?
- inactive, on 04/04/2009, -0/+3Is there a way to change tool - right click behavior?
This is one of the things where PS pwns most programs.
I also wish Paint Shop Pro was never bought out by Coral. It was actually very good until Coral changed the UI into wank fest. - chadsmith729, on 04/03/2009, -0/+2I like GIMP for touch-ups and standard everyday use. However, I still bust out my VirtualBox XP image when I need to do some heavy lifting with Photoshop. I am really excited though to see that the kids are starting to use GIMP more and some I know are really pretty darn good with it! Me, I was raised on Photoshop and it's really hard for me to not have all the luxuries that it gives you. Really good article though, I modded mine today because of the article.
- aaronhoffmeyer, on 04/04/2009, -0/+2These sorts of comments are funny, because the powerhouse animation shops all use Gimp for what it allows them to do. They also use a huge variety of packages, including Photoshop, but Gimp is in there too.
- aaronhoffmeyer, on 04/04/2009, -0/+2Visicalc
Corel Draw
Harvard Graphics
Foxbase - tnoy, on 04/04/2009, -0/+2Gimpshop makes Gimp just like Photoshop! (according to people who have only used Photoshop for about 5 minutes)
It took a a few (re)installs and Googling before I figured out that I had it installed right. - secrity, on 04/04/2009, -0/+2Gimp isn't a very descriptive name, but many commercial products aren't any more descriptive. How does "Excel" describe spreadsheets, or how does "Outlook" or "Eudora" relate to email?
- ArthurSucks, on 04/03/2009, -1/+3The title is a bit misleading, however plug-ins like liquid scale are amazing.
- ptxyz, on 08/20/2009, -0/+1But GIMP brutally pwns MS Paint!!! =P
- tnoy, on 04/04/2009, -0/+1Photoshop CS4 Extended is $200 for students usually. Some Universities/colleges have special agreements with major software vendors and get very deep discounts. For example, I can get a copy of Photoshop CS4 Extended for $110.
Deals like this are pretty sweet, too:
http://www.journeyed.com/itemDetail.asp?ItmNo=5006 ...
There are some great deals for students out there. I've had journeyed beat out my previous colleges' bookstores on prices most of the time. The University I work at now directs us to journeyed for most software purchases, too. - GelfTheElf, on 04/03/2009, -2/+3I agree with changing the name of GIMP and other stuff.
People google this and photoshop that.
Imagine people saying, "Hey can you GIMP this?" (never gonna happen)
What's the Movie editor called? FLACID? - tnoy, on 04/04/2009, -0/+1@bigteebo
At least its not as bad as GNU/Hurd
Have fun explaining that Hurd stands for HIRD of Unix-Replacing Daemons, and that HIRD stands for HIRD stands for HURD of Interfaces Representing Depth. - Jareth86, on 04/04/2009, -2/+3(none of which were replaced by free, open source programs)
- temsi, on 04/09/2009, -1/+1The Steps:
1. Accept the fact that GIMP, while perfectly useful and brilliant in it's own right, will never "Replace Photoshop"
2. Buy Photoshop. - tnoy, on 04/04/2009, -1/+1I've been saying this for years now.
- skinturtle, on 04/03/2009, -4/+4They need to change that interface. I do not know why they don't. They also gotta get rid of the candy color and toy like icons in the toolbox. It makes me feel like I'm using a kid's toy or Photoshop for the disabled
- TrellSaracen, on 04/06/2009, -2/+1...and you get what you pay for.
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -4/+3Nothing beats http://www.gimpshop.com/ for Photoshop clones.
- niradg, on 04/03/2009, -5/+4I tried to use GIMP, but I prefer Photoshop via Wine
- TrellSaracen, on 04/06/2009, -2/+1Photoshop jumped the shark years ago.
GIMP is Potsie's retarded little brother.
Paint Shop Pro had a bright future lined up until it got raped by Ralph Malph at the prom, crawled into a bottle and never came out. - coheedcollapse, on 04/03/2009, -6/+4It stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program. If you need to sound professional while using it, address it by its full name.
That said, if you need to sound professional, chances are you're going to want to use Photoshop anyways. It's worlds beyond GIMP for anyone but the most casual of image editors. - ortucis, on 04/03/2009, -6/+2Handy Tweak #999
- Open Photoshop
- Press PrtScrn
- Open Irfanview (freeware)
- Paste (Ctrl+V)
- Press Enter for fullscreen
- Stare - BoomWav, on 04/03/2009, -7/+3Handy Tweaks To Make You Think GIMP Can Replace Photoshop
- smashblu, on 04/03/2009, -13/+8GIMP is a great program but Photoshop is the (Photo)*****!
- frogman54, on 04/03/2009, -14/+5Hah hah. They keep trying. I admire their spirit. But yeah, GIMP is lame.
