- techforce5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hamachi is easy to install, but getting it set up as a service on w2k server was a pain in the ass. this would have saved me some time.
- bytefoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hamachi is freakin sweet. I just started playing with it yesterday. Lets me connect up to all my buddies to play games just as if we were on a LAN.
- SpazticChips, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah, i've been using this with my friends for a while, great program and they made really easy to use, would reccomend A++
- covaro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The latest beta's also fix a lot of issues that the "stable" version has. Never had an issue with any of the betas.
- cy_kid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1duston. You need to run hamachi as a service to fix the remote desktop problem. It has something to do with a conflict with the windows user id. Hamachi is AWESOME!
- idiggeverything, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, never heard of this. Thanks :)
- DotaDevil, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0err...... Can I ask u 1thing? How do u create a game once u create a network?
- ExSlyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Logmein only really provides remote desktop capabilities, not real VPN capabilities. While you can transfer files to and from the host machine, you can't map drives within your windows, if you need to modify a file on the host machine with a progam on your local machine, you have to copy it to your machine, do the editing then transfer it back.
- cdaters, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hamachi itself is encrypted, therefore no worries! Just read the section on their homepage under security, http://www.hamachi.cc/ or more info here, http://www.hamachi.cc/security/
- teh_techie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have no problem with Hamachi. There were issues with Windows Remote Desktop, but I hate remote desktop anyways.
If you want a free remote that works really well, and is 256bit encrypted (which remote desktop is not encrypted at all), then visit http://logmein.com. I've been using logmein for about 1.5 months, and it's the best remote desktop I've ever used. - Duston, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1While VNC works fine across Hamachi has anyone else had trouble with Windows Remote Desktop?
- whitty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ mianos: You are wrong. Gibson has personally looked at the source and seems to deem it secure. Good enough for me, especially in addition to the technologies it at least claims it runs. tcp tunneled through UDP = no self-inflicted packet loss, both encrypted and authenticated, aes encryption on even the messaging, I feel pretty safe running it. Besides, most of the users of openvpn don't know anything more than the rest of us about looking for themselves for security holes, and probably wouldn't find any anyway. And you're right, openvpn requires a reasonable amount of technical skill to set up. With Hamachi, I can just IM all my gamer friends and say "www.hamachi.com. download. install. lan=xxx pass=xxx."
I don't know that I'd go so far as to recommend running it on every server in a mission critical data center, but at the same time, I have no problem using it on all of my own servers, because A. I know that if the machine has any form of connection to the Internet, i can get to it somehow, whether a DNS entry didn't update or whatever it may be, and B. I know that I'm not losing security through my firewall, because any Hamachi traffic is solicited, not a hole in my firewall, and the hole that it DOES put through my firewall during use is shrouded not only by a thick and encrypted UDP wall, with a thin but also encrypted and authenticated inner TCP wall. I've also run intense port scans during Hamachi use, and the ports it uses are just as well masked from the outside world as any others in my 'wall. - handband2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I find using a batch script the easiest. It makes life so easy.... Check out "choad's" post:
http://forums.hamachi.cc/viewtopic.php?t=522&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=batch&start=15
I made my own but "choad's" is great for anyone who needs to set Hamachi on multiple computers. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This product defeats the purpose of a VPN. Classic man-in-the-middle vulnerabilities and snoopings. Why would you bother going with a basic tenet of insecurity?
- racerxyz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ac MCBURTON points out, it's not Opensource. This coming from Gibson who demands that MS Windows should be opensource. Nonetheless, Hamachi is very narrow in scope and doesn't allow for advanced configrations. I USE MS VPN just fine, which with registry hacks can be set to alternative ports... yes I know that's a server product. However, hamachi, at this stage, can't even specify alternative ports. And don't tell me about the "MAGIC OPTION" which doesn't address the issue.
- 1ivewire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This isn't really a forum, but I managed to follow this guide when my computer wouldn't start up. It turned out that the sptd.sys from Daemon Tools would no longer load properly, and I had to disable it. Is anyone able to run both Hamachi as a service and Daemon Tools?
- racerxyz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 >> FireSoul - "Not even us."
Uh, who's "us"? I guess we just have to take your word for it. - kabewm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey Duston,
Hamachi works fine with Remote Desktop as long as the account that you are logging into isn't the same account that hamachi is running under. For some reason it appears that XP drops all net access for a user when he/she logs in. This is why the Remote Desktop login shows up but it doesn't let you actually connect. Running as a service helped me out. But it's not enough to just run as a service, you have to logg in remotely because otherwise hamachi ends up on your system tray and that gets affected during login as well. - jerbroc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here is a .msi installer i used to install hamachi as a service, worked great.
http://www.voxcode.com/downloads/InstHamachiSvc.zip - BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hamachi is one of the best pieces of free software I have ever used.
It is also one of the slickest. - riot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if you want to use the remote connection internet you could also install a proxy server
that is what I did. Install wingate have it only forward connections on the 5.x.x.x address
Now at the motel you can access your remote network or any other http ftp service with out the hotel packet sniffing your info. Never tried pop over proxy but I am sure that would be possible too - hiro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg 'cos Hamachi is great
- mianos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's not free. It's of unkown cryptographic quality (Correct me if I am wrong but who knows what's in it).
It is very easy to set up.
No dig when you have the choice of openvpn to do the same thing for free and well know cryptographic quamilty. Although it's a little more complicated to set up it's also support natively under windows and linux. Maybe I'd recommend Hamachi to my less technical literate friends but I'd never use it myself. - dandiemer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd hardley say that Gibson demanded windows to be open source, but instead said that it's hard to know whats going on when it's closed source. He gave the same warning with hamachi, but did his best to question the creator to ensure that it was as safe as we can possibly know.
- Flyinace2000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0OSX Version
http://forums.hamachi.cc/viewtopic.php?p=19543#19543 - iaskedTGT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1but does it protect you from Bush?
- DotaDevil, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0err...... can some1 tell me how 2 create a game after u created a network?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I've been using this for a while. I use it to play lan games and such the only problem I have is the windows file sharing thing and that takes forever but that's fine using other methods it goes just great.
- Stikes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Hamachi is the best vpn due to its ease
- Flyinace2000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0as soon as there is a mac version i am all set. According to the website it is in the works.
There was an indepth review of it on Security Now w/ steve gibson (Podcast). - kickarse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This doesn't allow for firewall proxy if anyone's interested...
- gurijala, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I used it too and had a very good experience rather than windows file sharing.
Screenshots at
http://gurijala.blogspot.com/2006/01/lan-over-internet-for-sharing-files.html - jeolmeun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0hmm
- mcburton, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Hamachi is wonderful in theory, but it isn't opensource. I have a hard time utilizing a VPN solution that I can't code audit for backdoors or remote exploits. I would urge the author's to open up the project. I guess the source is available for commercial licenses (had to dig in forums to find that out), gotta make money somehow....
- ExSlyder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0No need to be using that language.
- spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0What's the advantage of using it as a service? Then you don't have the nice gui :(
@techhit~
Ya the Windows file sharing is stupid and you can't setup users/permissions. That's why I disabled it and used GuildFTPd to set up a ftp server on my hamachi connection. easier than ***** with my router ;) - DotaDevil, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0Hey! Who wans to join me in my network. My network is de dota and password is dedota. Join me and hav some dota fun! :)
- 5m0k3, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Hamachi is great.
http://techblaster.blogspot.com - magneticpigeon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0But its not for Mac! :( But it works great on my windows machine!
- stoops, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Man, hamachi sucks, your depending on someone elses server being up. i suggest getting a real os (Linux/OSX) first of all and then getting a real vpn or ssh solution (openvpn/openssh). sorry for the flame but i'd rather run my own server from home then have it go through someone elses.
