I'm not trying to be an *****. Really, I'm not, but... I've seen "doesn't look like *****", and that's not it. :-/ - Gagle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Hummmm, unless you own a Mac or only run Linux, foobar2000 is the best dam audio player. Takes time to fully customize it but it's worth the hassle.
Luckily amarok will be ported completely to Windows soon. - jaba1337, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11The forums have a ton of info about customizing foobar too. Pretty much anything you want to know can be found there.

http://www.foobar2000.org/ - tfish77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I've been using foobar for about a year now, and I can't imagine going back to iTunes or winamp or any of the others I've tried along the way. So customizable, really easy to use without any customizations, and wonderful for managing a really large music library.
- dree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@bryan986:
File > Preferences > General > Keyboard Shortcuts
Click the Play box, press your Play button. Repeat for your other buttons. - AndrewLZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5foobar2000 does things that other players can't do period. For example, it would be very difficult to properly organize a piece of music for which you want to store and easily differentiate Pianist, Conductor, Ensemble, Work, Colloquial Work Name, Movement, Opus, Date Recorded, Place Recorded, Genre, Label, Physical CD, CD Code, Disc Number and Track Number information in a standard audio player. However, with foobar2000, you can do so with ease: http://img366.imageshack.us/img366/8979/fb2kcs5.jpg

I'm going to be an ***** and say it does look like *****, but at least now you can judge me too ;-)
http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/4061/foobarqc0.jpg - Kriff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5foobar's customization is great. It's light on resources. It's a small program, but it does just as much as the bigger ones.
- Loie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5of course there is a volume slider....
- mhl12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5musikcube anyone? http://www.musikcube.com/
- spliffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3the best music player available on the market.
i long for the day it or something comparable is released for mac - AndrewLZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I love foobar2000 because it has allowed me to organize my classical music library in a way that no other player could. I looked at all of my other options, and absolutely didn't want to invest hours and hours of work in building a suitable interface / organization scheme, but ended up being forced to because of the amount of data I wanted to store and easily view for a track.
Here is my layout: http://img83.imageshack.us/img83/8974/fb2kfullbi1.jpg
If anyone is interested in using this layout, please feel free to let me know at azey47 at hotmail . com. It works with both XP and Vista. - tdk2fe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My favorite is that it comes with masstagger (I've actually tagged up my entire collection). And I don't notice any performance hit when running it. People are right - it's not very flashy. But to be honest I don't sit at my computer and watch my media player interface while i'm listening to music - i'd rather free up the resources to be doing other things more quickly.
- CheezIt9109, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Awesome. I'm happy to see more recognition for this outstanding top-of-the-line application. You simply cannot beat it.
- jamester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'll give it a shot. I'm rebuilding my compy from scratch today, and this hit just at the right time - I'll give an iTunes-less world a try. Dugg!
- warMen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2love foobar. handles huge playlists effectively and starts up in no time. i also love my layout (although it was a pain to get right). And the DSPs are simple, easy, and awesome.
- dree, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I switched to foobar2k after Winamp pushed 45MB (huge library)
... fb2k stays under 20MB withe the same library. - yessrao, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I prefer foobar as it is. If I wanted a flashy display, I would have rather used another player.
- Trollhammaren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have used Foobar2000 since v0.8.3, it's one of those simple and honest programs that makes you think "why haven't we always used this?" (like Firefox). I recommend you trial it if you haven't already.
- clos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Amarok, Banshee, Exaile.....
- Defcon79, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Foobar is for people who want to spend time configuring endless options so you can get it 'just so'. And yes, it probably is more configurable than other media players, but that comes at a cost. All the talk about other players using too much cpu, or Foobar's supposedly better sound quality, is irrelevant. Lets talk about a proper music app like J.River media center, QCD, MediaMonkey, musikcube etc. All of those do out of the box 99% of what anyone could ever need, as long as you din't want obscure displays etc.
Package foobar with a set of useful plugins, and perhaps more people would use it. But I suspect the devs and the fans want to keep it the way it is, and that suits me just fine :) - iOsiris, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2FB2K really is the *****. I got it like a year ago when Winamp screwed me by not reading UNICODE and its Devs absolutely refused to implement it. So out went Winamp and yeah FB2K took like 6 hours the first time for me to figure out how to use it but now it takes really like minutes if I ever wanted to configure stuff.
And yes, Winamp has unicode support now, but that's just too little too late.
FB2K > Winamp - g7gij, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2foobar is so good, winamp takes just too long to start up. The new version of winamp is better.still too much bloat.
Songbird has great potential, although sometimes the audio playback quality is awful. and I have to switch
to winamp, don't know why. mp3's encoded with lame vbr high quality.using audiograbber..
Foobar is doing what I want just fine with no messing, and its only been up 3 minutes, now that is
a mark of good program. - DamageInc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've always wanted to use it, but I love the iTunes look and functionality (but not the bloating and slow performance). I even tried creating a iTunes replica with foobar, but was unsuccessful.
If anyone can give me a tutorial to mod an iTunes replica for foobar, I will use it. - jewcantdenyit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i use mediamonkey, i've found it to be excellent for organizing a large library because of one of its main features: Auto-organize. Basically what it does is, renames, moves, and deletes source folder of your music to a desired path. Really fast and easy to use to keep your music uniformed and organized.
- Loie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2just what I was looking for! thanks!
- swazooe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2maybe so but fb2k owns
- norz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1duplicate, digg down...
(refresh bug in digg?) - scheda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been using foobar for a few years now and wouldn't change it for anything!
- norz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1link to big image (vs. thumbnail):
http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/6498/neoshooter1dl4.png - tyashki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Trawl through the foobar forums and you'll find configs that look like this:
http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/6498/neoshooter1dl4.th.png - myxyplik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Agreed. I keep my music player in the background, so I don't have any burning need for one that has to look pretty.
- norz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@ lonster3000
Nobody likes to answer the same questions over and over again.
That's why there's a nice wiki here: http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=Foobar2000
If something is unclear in the wiki, search in the forums. If you find nothing, then ask politely in the forums.
And when you have your information, ask for a wiki account and add the missing information....
That's how a good community works! :) - praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -3/+3cacoe, do you stare at your music player while music is playing?
- Lonster3000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Also like *some* Linux fans, some Foobar users have a very elitist, smugness to them, with a "RTFM!!!!" attitude towards anyone asking newbie questions. If they had to struggle to learn all the hidden features of FB, then so should anyone else.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Although the hood is welded shut, there are plenty of pretty after-market parts you can put on!
- Xorp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I really tried to love foobar2000, for a few months, but it's a lot of work to make it look amazing. In the end I cheapened out and downloaded iTunes.
- temy, on 10/28/2007, -0/+0A very big WOOOOW!!!!! How did you customize it this way?
- Ghengis, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3No thanks... I like having the source to the software that I run... even if I never do look at some of it, I like knowing that I can (and that I have the legal RIGHT to do so, as bestowed upon my by the license(s) of the software I use). Go ahead and flame away, but software should be *free*
- nevaseez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I started with winplay3 in 1995, then switcheed to winamp, been using ever since.. until today.. I just switched to foobar2000, even though my comment sounds like a paid infomercial plug it's pure genuine!
- the search feature is ridiculously quick - lampshade, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1When talking about rolling out your own "killer audio player" I would think that any player that is open sourced completely would be better for you. I mean by definition even a little bit closed means that you can't mod it as much to your personal liking as an open one.
/Oh and I'm not some super EVERYTHING MUST BE OPEN guy. I just thought the submitter of this story had a really dumb idea as far as customizing goes. meh - fofr, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4I would recommend this blog for the latest configuration, something that was digg'd just yesterday: http://www.fooblog2000.com
- clos, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1iTunes runs great on Macs....
- hhravn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0In that case, i guess youre not on a windows platform, so its a no go for you anyway :o)
- surgen, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Its a nice player for yonder windows, but I think that mpd is better when it comes to control and customization.
- stormgren, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4I'd use it if somebody would tell me how to import the ratings and playcounts of the several thousand songs I have in iTunes.
I asked on their forums and was completely ignored. - topato, on 10/12/2007, -9/+7With a little work, you too can have a foobar that doesn't look like ***** http://img378.imageshack.us/img378/4190/foobarhn9.png
- AndrewLZ, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2accidental comment - digg down
- eLuminx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1when are we ever going to receive something as good as this on linux, and i mean natively not on wine..
