- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Pussies.
Just memorize IP addresses.
Like real men. :) - Web_Weasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9DNS is over 10 years old. It's still a good tutorial.
- ipodman715, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9lol, yeah it's exactly 10 years old.
- altidude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Real men don't use profanity filters.
- Xopl, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7but I don't think puthor is
- Xiol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So I get buried for asking someone to elaborate?
Right... - ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The author probably isn't even alive anymore.
- Web_Weasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Now stop that. Yes, bind 4 and 8 were security problems but bind 9 is just fine and not all that hard to configure. It's even easier if you use Webmin.
- FishyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Your DNS server is only as good as your connection, lose it and you're hosed.
- congiman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is a very dated article:
the boot file syntax changed with bind 8 and bind 9. (the article is based off of bind v4 naming).
The root hints file misses root servers J-M
TTL is now negative caching, and ttl is done as the:
$TTL variable.
Since the zone files, config files and hints are somewhat incorrect for the current version of bind, this makes for a poor article.
The best thing in the article, is that it references the DNS & bind book (which is the main thing you need) which is now in its 4th revision.
--C - hashkaran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This article was posted a decade ago. Not that information is not valid but
there are have been lot of advances over last 10 years.. - chickenman316, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is so old, I was in high school in 1996. I'm now out of college, have a career, and I'm married.
- pacmansyu, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8How does stupid ***** like this get to the front page???
- tehfink, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5fyi if you're on linux or bsd, DO NOT USE BIND. tinydns is way safer and easier to use. most distros have a package for it.
http://tinydns.org/ - MrMuskrat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1weirdone said: "blocked by websense, must be a very reputable source"
The reason it is blocked by Websense is because, as mikerog pointed out, the url contains the word proxy. - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Here's how I setup my DNS at home
echo "192.168.1.1 hostname" >> /etc/hosts
OR on windows, modify windowssystem32driversetchosts
Not as elegant as having your own personal DNS server but a hell of a lot easier to maintain for a small home network. - teh_toaster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3is this supposed to be a Happy Birthday! digg for DNS?
- MattS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1THAT gave me a real laugh! Digg for the story, and a Digg for you!
BTW - you can find me @ 192.168.1.100. Please add me to your memory! - Netmindstorm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It would be much more useful to have a concise article on how to set up dynamic DNS especially in heterogeneous environments. I had to do this in a Linux/Windows environment a couple of years ago and while it's not hard, it is tedious to search the web for all the little nits to get it all working properly on both the client and server ends.
- deBeuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you're on OpenBSD you can use the named in base without being afraid it's not safe.
That code has been heavily audited.
Furthermore, the only thing you have to do is edit rc.conf.local and add 'named_flags="yes"' to make it start up automatically the next time you boot the machine. - mbiesz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks like single backslashes are treated as escapes...
- schmuckman999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ok does anyone know of a DNS app besides Bind for Mandriva 2006 or does anyone have a tutorial for how to chroot Bind 9?
- exick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's only blocked by whoever is running your Websense installation. The site falls into the Proxy Avoidance category, so whoever is maintaining Websense where you are now has decided that category is off-limits. The reputation of the source has nothing to do with it.
- chicagobiker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The networking protocol stack you used to post this comment was invented in 1973. Years before you were even born. Does that make it any less relevant?
- chicagobiker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The people who wrote your operating system used a 35 year old source and your traversing a network that's more than 50 years old.
- ardellin, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Eh, no thanks. No real need to have my own DNS server.
- sanmarcos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I dont know why, but your comment made me depressed. My unconcious is playing reverse DNS tricks with me.
- tehJR, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Well, we should let the author know so he can update it!
According to the site:
"He may be reached on the Internet at kumquat@sover.net." - anastrophe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1regardless of the "better" security of recent binds, still, nobody should run it. it's lame, monolithic, software, like sendmail. no control over your cache is reason enough.
- compu73rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I'd love to use a 10 year old source to make my own DNS server.
- crizo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The mere act of posting this on DIGG is, in itself, a security risk.
- weirdone, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3blocked by websense, must be a very reputable source
- ehrichweiss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hehe..that reminds me when I first got online and had the IP's for all the Amiga software(Aminet) mirrors memorized. I can still recall most of the IP for funet.fi's mirror...
- johnder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1yawn. I am going to send this to my uucp email address it is 3l33t3.
