Their final sound is very MIDI-ish. Reminds me of the Beavis and Butthead SNES music - Makubex, on 11/03/2007, -2/+8Actually... this is noise:

These half-assed articles from engadget are really annoying. - ewhac, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7Not to appear like a smartass, but I predicted something like this a few months ago. What prompted the prediction was when I saw a set of USB drumsticks on the shelf at BestBuy, which basically completed all the necessary electronic augmentation needed for a pop band.
Some time in the next year or two, you're going to see a "band" that has absolutely no proper musical talent (except perhaps following a rudimentary beat), and this will be known to everyone up front. The "singers" will have their voices electronically modulated and corrected. All the "guitarists" will be playing on Guitar Hero controllers or one of the MIDI guitars that have been out for a while. The "drummer" will have a set of USB drumsticks and simply whack away at anything and everything; the drumbox will make all the sounds, and correct for minor errors in rhythm. Dancing will be confined to the patterns they learned in Dance Dance Revolution. Basically, the only thing they'll be able to do is look pretty for the camera and maybe a few live appearances. Composition and arrangement will be done by professional pop musicians, and the computers will do everything else.
My guess is the first incarnation of this will be a bunch of kids who put this together themselves using the toys they've gotten over the years and throw a couple of videos up on YouTube. It will have a certain charm for its authenticity (they did it by themselves for the hell of it) and their raw enthusiasm. The immediately succeeding version will be an RIAA-endorsed bunch of Perfectly Pretty Performers.

- tj9991, on 11/03/2007, -0/+4I've heard horrible music. This is downright awful.
They sort of make up for it with the cool innovative idea, but still... its awful :( - robohoe, on 11/03/2007, -1/+4Dugg for the reference to Merzbow/noise artists.
- sbender, on 11/03/2007, -0/+3Great Idea. Too bad the music sucks!
- esotericguy, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7dont, they cant sing and theres way too much overdrive.
I can only digg this article for it's outside-the-box-thinking awesomness.
If i could i would digg it down many times for the horrible site they have and the horrible songs they play. - Atomic1fire, on 11/03/2007, -0/+3if they got a pro in the hands of that thing it might be a little more impressive
- FlapJaw, on 11/03/2007, -1/+4Their music is horrible
- PrettyMuchBryce, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Never put your hands in your pockets when you perform. It makes you look like a nervous douche.
- boomshakalaka, on 11/03/2007, -0/+2explain to me how that is different than the Top of the Pops crap we already have today?
- ozydingo, on 11/03/2007, -0/+2With an unmodified GH controller how could the sound not be MIDIish? They've got what, 32 possible binary fret-key combinations, so no room for expression there, and synthed guitar sounds have never been that good--just a step ahead of synthed brass sounds.
A neat thought though, but I'd never go to see them play (even if they *could* sing). - FlappJaxXx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3"Some time in the next year or two, you're going to see a "band" that has absolutely no proper musical talent (except perhaps following a rudimentary beat), and this will be known to everyone up front."

Not everyone is you. Some people might enjoy watching people play "music" with guitar hero controllers. It seems like they're mostly doing it for fun, though, and perhaps the programmer is trying to flex his brain a little bit. I'll admit that the music isn't that great, but the idea is definitely interesting. - bbear, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Wow do they suck. Horrible horrible horrible suck.

- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1thanks for the endgadget blogspam puke. The actual cnet article has the video. I don't give a ***** to hear the blog puke drivel at me from endgadget dorks who think they are clever but really just want more adsense.
- auburnguy1000, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It seems like all the time people invest in playing guitar hero they could have invested in learning to play a real guitar. Being able to play a real guitar with skill is much more impressive to the ladies than being able to play a guitar hero controller with skill.
- neuro420, on 04/06/2008, -0/+1Vote for Pedro
- dbr_onix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Most bands that have keyboard-players do something similar with MIDI keyboards. I'm sure there are better examples, but 65daysofstatic use Ableton and a MIDI keyboard (Along side normal guitars/bass/piano/drums) for fairly large parts of their songs (For example : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mE3TLJeFOCc ).
A lot of electronic performers do similar things to what you describe, albeit with less showmanship (The USB drumsticks and such)
Since I started playing around with music-creation software (fairly recently), and hearing how good software like Reason can sound in real-time, using MIDI inputs - I've wondered if there was any bands who have used entirely MIDI based instruments. A few custom-built MIDI interfaces, and a few laptops and I don't see why such a thing isn't possible - Instruments are made like they are to make controllable noises, I see no reason why you couldn't replace the strings of a guitar with a computer, or a drum with a switch that triggers an appropriate drum-noise. The biggest problem would be losing the more intricate control over the the strings of a guitar, for example - a few buttons couldn't replicate the analogue-control of a proper guitar string, but that isn't necessarily limiting considering the huge range of sounds a computer could make, or the flexibility it would add. - neuro420, on 04/06/2008, -0/+1Most musicians are douche-bags, especially the ones that like to criticize other people who they deem less talented compared to their rock god status.
- dixon, on 11/03/2007, -3/+3 A for originality
C- for execution
/star power - Error601, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Yea, I can give you a list of bands doing various digital guitar stuff. Usually it's not because they like the results, but because your average bar crowd seems to want every song to sound like a CD recording of the song. Basically people wants karaoke and not real performance.
- m2313, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2@stockjones if you mean mainstream rock yes but there is always good rock if you're willing to look hard enough.
Anyway, I enjoy a game for what it is a game. I play both guitar and guitar hero, but this is taking it way too far. A band though making music is meant to be fun should require real talent. I don't want to see a punch of people banging on controllers, I want to see people who have learned and worked to play or make music. On the other hand if you did this kind of thing just for fun with you and your friends I could understand and if you were to play free shows for your friends I could understand. But to go out in public and call yourself a band and charge people to see this....Why people would do it is beyond me... - CatalystDM, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I'm pretty sure that band already exists (er, existed), and it's called NSYNC.
- loserdork, on 11/03/2007, -2/+1A friend of mine has a more unique set up for his experimental electronic one man band.
He uses UForce and a Powerglove with Videomation on the NES for what he coined as the "Nintendo Theramin."
He uses pre-programmed beat that he made using multiple copies of Mario Paint for SNES.
He uses the DJ scratching thing that was on Gameboy Camera.
He uses a Nintendo Hands-Free controller to make bleeps and boops.
It's pretty cool. He also has a Konami Laserscope but hasn't figured out what to do with it yet. - kman922002, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0nerds and their toys
