- TunaFishGangsta, on 08/27/2008, -16/+1223There's always a way around it. ;)
- FeargusMcDuff, on 08/28/2008, -4/+601Not the background! NOT THE BACKGROUND!
- diggit83, on 08/27/2008, -20/+577Like we all haven't disabled windows updates since soon after sp2 anyways...
- sexybobo, on 08/28/2008, -2/+474What ever you do don't put
127.0.0.1 mpa.one.microsoft.com
in your host file on a fresh install of XP that would never work. - insomniac8400, on 08/27/2008, -5/+391I'm surprised it doesn't just display a buy link to windows vista.
- latova, on 08/28/2008, -4/+361". . . Our research has clearly shown that customers value the ability of Windows to alert them when they may have software that is not genuine, but they also want the ability to stay up to date with the least effort required on their part. . . ."
Who was the subject of their research, Microsoft shareholders and Steve Ballmer? - gonrada, on 08/27/2008, -11/+286Maybe if they make XP crappy enough we wont want it?
I have a legit copy of XP on my desktop and I still refuse to let GWA touch my machine. - JBmtk, on 08/28/2008, -34/+274i installed windows xp pro using a pirate corporate edition torrent on all 5 computers at my home and office. I will continue to do the same. Bite me.
- Wuss, on 08/28/2008, -6/+245if you're running pirated xp pro and allowing automatic updates to download WGA updates...you're not the bright.
Like it's been said, there's always a workaround. For starters, don't install the damn update. - norman619, on 08/28/2008, -65/+273And say goodbye to your favorite applications and the ability to play current video games.
That makes perfect sense! - cawpin, on 08/28/2008, -1/+190Yes, they have. And they got some serious ***** over it. There was a story on here where a guy sent them an invoice for loosing work when his computer restarted despite being set to not download updates. He was running a render or something.
- Chirp08, on 08/28/2008, -1/+171They should make it Goatse you if they really want it to make a difference.
- 10goto10, on 08/28/2008, -17/+183***** Microsoft naggers...
- latova, on 08/28/2008, -1/+161They'll probably make it a stealth update, where it ignores that setting. They've done it before I think.
- NoCt1, on 08/28/2008, -1/+141i run a black background anyways. so..
- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -2/+138:)
*makes you a spanish omelette* - seanmc303, on 08/28/2008, -109/+230Install Ubuntu.
- KMartSheriff, on 08/28/2008, -95/+215Not all of us want to hunt for/write our own drivers, hang out in terminal all day, or run OpenOffice.
Windows has its many flaws, but at least it has games/software. Go ahead, digg me down fanboys. - brstilson, on 08/28/2008, -4/+120I actually "pirated" my legitimate copy because I didn't want to deal with the hassle of calling India and explaining the situation every time I reinstalled the OS. You can only enter the code from the sticker on the side of the machine a few times before you have to start calling them, navigating their phone system to finally speak to someone in order to get a new product code that you will promptly forget.
- illogik, on 08/28/2008, -7/+117"Ohhhh Naggers...."
- nights0223, on 08/27/2008, -3/+111Funny thing, my parents both have XP, one a legit copy and one pirated one. When I went to update, it said the legit copy was pirated and started with those WGA notifications, while the pirated one is fine.
- GreatDrok, on 08/28/2008, -8/+109I have a legit copy of XP Pro I paid real money for and WGA insists it is a pirated VLK copy. The licence key isn't even a VLK one, its OEM. I bought the OEM disc and installed it under Parallels on my MacBook Pro so I could run a few Windows only apps. Reinstalled and won't let it install WGA again but still feel annoyed that I getting hit with this false positive when I bought the software rather than just pirating. Maybe I'll just switch it out for the pirated copy of Win2K SP4 I have kicking around somewhere. No WGA worries there.
- Suricou, on 08/28/2008, -7/+94If it works: Lots of students go over to linux.
If it doesn't: Crack hits the net within hours. - autorock, on 08/28/2008, -5/+90The clue is: People Who Annoy You. You have ten seconds, Mr. Marsh. Talk it out.
- twiztidsinz, on 08/28/2008, -13/+93It's not a Mac product, sorry
- MrFurious2k, on 08/28/2008, -3/+82...and the nag message is: "Please upgrade to Vista. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE."
- JCH897, on 08/28/2008, -5/+80I guarantee you this will be cracked immediately.
- kurupttek, on 08/28/2008, -6/+75Nagger Please!
- Narcism, on 08/28/2008, -2/+68I'm not terribly scared, my desktop is pure black anyway...
- Tripper44, on 08/28/2008, -5/+70Was always such a pain in the ass to crack, I mean you had to actually go into safe mode and double click crack.exe, Man i was exhausted afterwards, took me days to recover ;)
- JMJimmy, on 08/28/2008, -4/+64I give it 8 hours before there's a workaround widely spread.
- shredswithpiks, on 08/28/2008, -66/+124I don't want to hunt for drivers all day. That's why I made the switch to ubuntu where everything works out of the box :)
- OneLess, on 08/28/2008, -7/+63I'm surprised it doesn't auto-update to Vista then charge your credit card for it.
- jawagas, on 08/28/2008, -3/+56I don't get the the omelet reference, but it was funny.
- mrswirl, on 08/28/2008, -1/+52Oh naggers. Of course, naggers. Right.
- SuperMoses, on 08/28/2008, -1/+50You can download updates, you just need to deselect the one that will nag your copy.
- bieber, on 08/28/2008, -1/+50Because then you might go use something other than Windows ;)
- wannapiece, on 08/28/2008, -5/+53Turning off updates is so hard...
- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -6/+52This idea is pure nonsense and FUD from microsoft, torrents have forums, people report when a copy is legit or fake, if its reported fake then the torrent health goes down to the point where no one will seed it. Its the same way the free market works and it keeps crap off the torrent far more effectively than it does on the Gnutella sharing networks for example.
Botnets do not come from illegitimate copies of windows, thats too slow and it would take forever for them to get a botnet of a million computers. No its far easier to take advantage of existing windows holes and holes in internet explorer to take over people computers, and thats exactly how they do spread. - theaceoffire, on 08/28/2008, -1/+46I always replace my legal copies with corporate edition ones.
As long as you pay for that initial key, its not wrong to strip out all the ***** they think I want... and lord knows its faster since the corporate edition tends to include most updates, firefox, and other programs by default (And still be 500MB).
Woo hoo, yahoo games! And a link to buy insurance! And a printer driver for 800 camera printers I don't own! - EternalParadox5, on 08/28/2008, -0/+42I'm not sure if Microsoft is still doing stealth updates, but you can disable the feature that allows for it.
Go to Run, type services.msc, and disable Background Intelligent Transfer Service.
Just remember to reactivate it when you want to install new updates. - HillerMylife, on 08/28/2008, -5/+47If they can tell which copies are pirated, why not just disable the entire OS?
- Deviate, on 08/28/2008, -3/+44because sometimes when people buy new computers from smaller retailers with XP pre-loaded, the operating system ends up not being legitimate, through no fault of the person running the computer. The retailer sold a license that was already used. It wouldn't be fair to lock someone who didn't do anything wrong out of their computer.
Plus, the other reason, is that if you have really important data on your computer and Microsoft shuts you out from that data, that would probably open them up to a lot of law suits. - sexybobo, on 08/28/2008, -1/+41There already is a workaround. disabling communication to the WGA servers is as easy as pasting a line in to your host file. This is just punishing the people that don't know the workarounds more.
- championchap, on 08/28/2008, -0/+39I didn't have to go into safe mode
- theaceoffire, on 08/28/2008, -0/+37Microsoft's keys can be generated... loads of copies on the shelf are already in use according to their system.
- wonderchemist, on 08/28/2008, -4/+41Are you sure it's legit? How much do you trust the person or place that sold it to you?
- notwizt, on 08/28/2008, -7/+43If you don't use your computer for gaming, consider Ubuntu.
- TRScheel, on 08/28/2008, -0/+35"-May I know the reason for reinstallation? (For me it's always spyware/virus issues)"
"I typically do this at least twice a week and have for the past 2 years,"
You're doing something wrong - zenithmbr, on 08/28/2008, -3/+38maybe you forgot which one was which... just a thought.
