- JYoungest1, on 04/22/2009, -5/+40I bet reddit in 3D will still be ugly
- SniperZero, on 04/22/2009, -0/+26Awesome I'll walk around my email account and have Nigerians tells me about their fortunes instead of reading them. I think I better buy an E-Gun
- JazzFlight, on 04/22/2009, -2/+23Will this make the web look like the Unix system in Jurassic Park?
- Bainemo, on 04/22/2009, -0/+15A 3D technology failed to take off when the most powerful console around was the super nintendo? Wow that's really surprising
- ryan83189, on 04/22/2009, -0/+15I could not believe it when I found out that was real. It's definitely not the preferred way, but I was tickled when I found out that Hollywood computer ***** was a little more true than I thought. It's called FSN, File System Navigator and that is an open source port if anyone is interested in the cheesy goodness.
- DamnMan, on 04/22/2009, -0/+14The nerd in me would get a kick out of the Gibson-esqu World Wide Web. Realistically this will mean dick for day to day browsing. Just more sophisticated resource hogging "punch the monkey" advertisements and web game time wasters.
"This page best viewed with at least an OpenGL 2.0 or DirectX 9 compatible video card." - cmzenise, on 04/22/2009, -1/+14What ever happened to VRML?
- brianpeiris, on 04/22/2009, -1/+13For FSM's sake please don't let the IE team touch the 3D Web.
- BorsKaegel, on 04/21/2009, -4/+15I would truly love to see a true browser-based 3D web environment take off. That is the next logical step in web design.
- Usatrash, on 04/21/2009, -0/+9I tried every one of the 3D sample and can't wait to see more of this on the web, about time!
- cmzenise, on 04/22/2009, -0/+9I actually had to look that one up.
- diggetty, on 04/22/2009, -0/+9It became X3D and still sux
- Olida, on 04/22/2009, -0/+9Bad news: They already did.
Good news: They gave up on 3D after IE 3. - hyderalamgir, on 04/22/2009, -3/+11reddit in reddit is ugly enough
- Lemm, on 04/22/2009, -0/+8until it's a giant street with 256 nodes and an exclusive black pyramid club... I'm not starting.
/justification due to no x64-linux support - Lucid00, on 07/15/2009, -0/+8You're moving tooo slow.
- Nocterminus, on 04/22/2009, -1/+8"It provides an interface that lets developers' Web-based JavaScript programs tap directly into a computer's graphics chip..."
I sure hope they work out the security for it and it's not another hole to be exploited by hackers - t0ny, on 04/22/2009, -1/+7... then it must be good!
- Norumeni, on 04/22/2009, -0/+6Prince Io is pretty badass.
http://o3d.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/samples/io/io. ... - Lucid00, on 07/15/2009, -0/+6Underline VRML and also underline 14 years ago.
- sukimashita, on 04/22/2009, -0/+6Purpose: Google Earth Browser Edition.
- int19h, on 04/22/2009, -0/+6O3D is using modern hardware, it's open, it's using a standardized language and it's backed by a big company. This is different from VRML, Flash, Shockwave, [insert your favorite proprietary 3D web plugin here], etc.
I think O3D become widespread quicker than anyone had imagined. - falser, on 04/22/2009, -2/+7Umm, we had this in 1996 when it was called WorldChat.
- stoanhart, on 04/22/2009, -0/+5It's not in the browser though. It's just a glorified launcher which still runs a separate process like regular Quake 3.
- waydee, on 04/22/2009, -0/+4Been tried and failed before but I guess if anyone can do it, it's google.
- int19h, on 04/22/2009, -0/+4I can't tell, the link to install the Unity Player only points to:
"javascript:%20window.open("
Not very impressive. - nurbsenvi, on 04/22/2009, -2/+6fanboism...
- neuber, on 04/22/2009, -0/+4Extremely impractical.
- Andres84, on 04/22/2009, -0/+4http://www.quakelive.com amazed me first time I saw it
- tomach, on 04/22/2009, -0/+4Now where the hell is linux plug-in Google?
- kim^lwx, on 04/22/2009, -1/+5Nice. This has quite a lot of potential; having Adobe fail hard on implementing 3D in Flash, Google instantly rock by going down the hardware-accellerated path and supplying cross-platform plugins right from the start.
I can't wait to see how this project will develop! - WVUDoss, on 04/22/2009, -0/+4Talk about OCD...
- hansrodtang, on 04/22/2009, -0/+3I would prefer if I could switch between the two. I still prefer to look at maps in 2D when I am looking for directions to certain places.
- EarthBoundX5, on 04/22/2009, -0/+3old concept, but seems to be done better here. I forget its name, but there was that one web browser a few years back that would let you walk around a "city" with web pages as various walls/storefronts.
EDIT: I think this is what I used to have, but looks like they've updated it alot since I last saw it. http://3b.net/browser/newhome.html - niktech, on 04/22/2009, -0/+3Imagine the 3D hardware acceleration capabilities that this plug-in provides coupled with the native x86 performance of Native Client and you get a clear picture of where Google is headed...
- int19h, on 04/22/2009, -0/+3The Blender web plugin isn't maintained or developed any more, as far as I know. I don't think it's distributed with Blender either, but probably possible to find hidden in a corner of the Blender webpage.
But, Blender is great at exporting to COLLADA, which seems to become the prominent format for 3D on the Web, used by for instance Papervision3D, and now O3D. Many of the other 3D-apps struggle with COLLADA, so this is great for Blender. - int19h, on 04/22/2009, -0/+3This looks better than VRML. Also, VRML has a few narrow fields where it's not a complete flop, I know it's used for visualizing oil rigs, for instance.
- int19h, on 04/23/2009, -0/+3Yes, some are open and some are backed by big companies, but as far as I know, only O3D has all the factors I mentioned.
- hongkongjapie, on 04/22/2009, -0/+3Unity3d has something like this, but their development platform also is able to make standalone Windows and Mac OS X binaries (sorry, no Linux, although it does work reasonably well under wine) and (although there are some technical differences) iPhone and Wii.
- the8thbit, on 04/22/2009, -0/+3Exactly what I thought. I have a feeling that, once this plug-in is OS independent, like Google has stated they plan on doing, they will launch a browser-based version of Google Earth, and slowly phase out Google Maps as a 'legacy' application for dialup and satellite users.
Sounds good to me. - iiiears, on 04/22/2009, -0/+2Competition is a great thing!
You have to wonder though how standards will develop for people partially sighted and the blind. - iiiears, on 04/22/2009, -0/+2Tools easy enough for anyone to use.
Something to stitch photos into textures and constructs.
PHP coding is difficult enough - lol - d3dm, on 04/22/2009, -0/+2FYI, VRML and its successor X3D are both ISO certified as international standards.

There's also JSR-926 (Java 3D). - Ratteler, on 04/22/2009, -1/+3$1400. I already paid for enough 3D apps that i had to learn.
- ApeInago, on 04/22/2009, -3/+5vrml sucked balls technogy-wise.
- Ttech2, on 04/22/2009, -0/+2Great, now I gotta get that.
- HeavyWave, on 04/22/2009, -0/+2Flash is backed by a pretty big company.
- NegativeDigg, on 04/22/2009, -4/+6They want to turn the internet into second life?
- rnawky, on 04/22/2009, -4/+6Comment structure is now 75% harder to follow!
- Ttech2, on 04/22/2009, -0/+2Her'es A brilliant idea, mozilla and google work together ot make a standard. What a shocker...
