- HitLines, on 10/12/2007, -4/+39As someone who runs Adsense across multiple domains I can tell you that users do not need to click on the adwords when doing a search. Simply running a search will ping the adwords DB and pull up ads that are related to that search. People pay for those results which is how Google makes money just off a search.
Just my 2¢ - rafster, on 10/12/2007, -14/+44Wow. That makes a lot of cents!
- beelz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+272.7 billion * .12 = three hundred twenty-four million
- quadvods, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Not if I never click adsense adverts...
You know a lot of people actually don't know if they click the first link that appears that it is 'sponsored' and it costs an advertiser when they click it.. even if an identical link is under it - they don't realize that the first few links are adverts. Shocking but true. I only actually realized this when I installed a proxy at work that prevented people clicking through adverts and wondered why everyone was moaning they couldn't use google like they had been doing before. - dynamit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18They don't tell you how they came up with the 12 cents number. That kinda sucks.
- gandre, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19Reminds me of this joke:
The news comes to Donald Rumsfeld that three of Brazil's soldiers were killed in Iraq.
He takes this news to the President "George, I must inform you that three Brazilian soldiers died in Iraq today".
Bush shakes his head in sorrow and says a silent prayer.
He then asks "Don, remind me, just how many is a brazilion?". - digboy99, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Forgive me for not believing you, but rather than just say "I know, believe me, I am genius", please provide some evidence with your boasting.
- lexbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Probaby to "sense" which "ad" to display based on the search.
- nickfromdc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I think the distinction should be that Google made 12¢ for every search on average, not that every search yields 12 cents. Thus, the amount of revenue would be ($ Ad revenue) ÷ 2.7 billion searches = 12¢/search.
- wolever, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13boo, hiss
(digg for the awful pun =p) - arrrrrg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This amount is heavily skewed towards certain searches, i'm sure. IIRC, the going rate for a click on an asbestos-targed ad is around $30 (!!), no joke. So the other day, when I was feeling pissed at laywers and I clicked on about 10 of these, I made up for about 3000 searches where Google made only a penny or two.
- mrhaines, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7What is even more amazing is that Blizzard is pulling in almost 200 million a month just for World of Warcraft.
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Or blocked with AdBlock. :)
- jefftheworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Each search does make them money though. Every time you do a google searth a series of sponsored links appear on the right. These ads generate money for google whether or not you click on them. Even if every ad costs only 2 cents, an average of six or seven ads accounts for the 12 cent figure.
- quadvods, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@hitlines.. The whole point of adwords is that advertisers only pay for actual clicks, not views on the search results.
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Now it makes sense how they have so much money (outside of their gigantic stock price)
Also, you don't have to click on the Adsense ads for Google to make money. The advertisers pay up front to have those ads up there. So, Google gets it no matter what - johndi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Maybe I should click on a few ads to help them put down Verizon and AT&T.
- TheCheeta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Not sure why people have an aversion to ads, especially Google's. They are tasteful, not in the way, they don't move... and they are topical. They have the perfect ad. I have no issues clicking on any Google ads. Why some people are so against other people making money is beyond me. If someone uses Google Ads (such as I do on my site), it may just be to cover hosting fees... what is wrong with that? Nothing is free... including the Internet. Welcome to the real world.
- Sell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I use google search all day long at work but I've never clicked on an ad. Is that like stealing? uh oh
- Dysanovic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Lets hope that Digg doesn't start automatically (for a price) digging "stories" (i.e. adverts) for company's who want to get attention for their products!
- mozillaman0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If this figure is true, which it probably isn't, they could just hire someone to search for things 8 hours a day and make tons of money.
- GoNoles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2To type the ¢ symbol, hold down Alt and type 0162 on the number pad (not the number keys across the top of the keyboard).
- RexKwando, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Digboy is on the money. Show me the evidence or shut up.
It is tough to comprehend how much Google is actually raking in? Are they the next Microsoft? I'm eager to see what you all think on this! - ai42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Somehow I just can't beleive that Google makes 12c a search. I know they get a cut of all of this Adsense revenue, and lots of people click. But good lord that is a heck of lot of revenue. I thought Google had all the cash from their inflated stock price. By this estimate I must make Google $2-3 a day!
- cooperaa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think you meant:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&safe=off&q=%24.12%20*%202.7%20billion&btnG=Search - lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow that is amazing. Major kudos to google for harnessing such a lucrative business. I probably earn them 2 bucks in a day!
¢_¢ - ThatsUnpossible, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@hitlines: People pay for higher placement on the results page, but the cost is only factored in when someone actually clicks on your link...
- 15charmaxwtf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think I've clicked an advert once. And any other time it was obviously a mistake: :P. Thank you to the customize google plug-in I wont do that mistake ever again.
- se1zure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1not true at all. My site, as well as my friends have been at the top of googles search, in spot number one, and have never had to pay a cent. You mst be thinking of the ads on the RIGHT side. The ads above your searches don't alwyas show up if your search is too relevant for them (i.e. searching for something along the lines of "Beretta 92FS Ultimate Power Soft Air Pistol" doesn't yeild any sponsored results on the top of your searches.) There are ads on the right, always as far as I've seen.
- LegendarySock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ironic... they make 12 cents per search, imagine, just one more cent per search and they make an additional 2 700 000 000 x 0.01 = 27 000 000 dollars. Also, keep in consideration that this is PER MONTH. amazing how much google has progressed.
- callumj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its called a server log.
Good on Google for doing what they are meant to do, not search but be a platform for advertising. - flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3as long as its free I dont care how much money they make. I use an extention to block ads so they arnt really making any money off me.
- alphacoder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1While it may be interesting in dollars and sense, I don't see this as particularly troubling. One of the benefits to using search engines from their web pages - not toolbars or add-ons - is that we are able to choose different engines for different purposes and locales.
Furthermore, if it is true that Google may be thinking of investing in wireless spectrum, I for one do not view a new entrant in the ISP space as unwelcome. So, if using Google equals more money for them and high quality results for me and may equal a new ISP, I am not too worried about their revenue. Now, when it comes to what they're charging me for my ads, uggh! LOL! - Trenton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I thought that google made almost nothing, just mostly on their ad revenue, but now I see clearly. Google is freakin' rich.
- G-RaZoR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would believe this because the seemlingly high click-thru rate of searches. I would also say that the 12 cents is not with every search, calculator, images, etc, aren't fully sponsored. Mainly just web searches that have the 2 sponsored ads on the top, and the 5 or so on the right side. Do the math, Google makes $450,000 every hour.
- artgon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So how much money does Digg make for every Digg (for lack of a better term)?
- ojk007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1its not the sposord links :p
u know those adds on the side??
*nods* - curtissthompson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the actual calculation comes out to this:
0.485 * ~2,700,000,000 * .12 = $157,140,000
You must factor that Google only accounts for 48.5% of the Internet search market (and this calculation assumes that that is consistent with the United States alone) and also the calculation above only factors American searches, completely leaving out the foreign countries statistics in this! This is the most accurate calculation one can make toward the money they make from this in the U.S. But this is not enough information to accurately say how much they really do make here, or elsewhere from searches! - coachace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How can they make money if we google "google"?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just think, they made 12 cents for everytime I typed 'define: dumbass'......*****!!
jRadville.com - subhuman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Google will still get money off the advertiser for displaying ads, it's just the actual user of adsense wont get any return for just displaying ads if that makes sense.
- Dysanovic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm not too surprised that they are getting this amount of cash per search. If I was wanting to advertise a product or service I'd want to get it seen. As google is the dominant search engine why would anyone pay to put an advert elsewhere?
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"do you know the shortcut"
It's not that hard to remember. It's Option-4 ($) on my Mac, which makes perfect sense. On Windows, iirc, it's Alt+155 on the numpad. I'm not sure how to do it on other OSs (without using a charmap app and copy & pasting it). - vypergts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe because Google is an Advertising company with a Search Engine and NOT a Search Engine that sells Advertising. You can't be an IPO without a business model...
- scott1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yes what he saying is compeltely untrue
But they do earn some money form selling hardware to companies(yes hardware)
If you need eveindnce just look here

- 1raZer1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Incorrect.
I have an adwords account and you only pay when someone clicks on your advert.
Read the adwords policy. - shindig111, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Thats a lot of money.... Yes.. But we get information so easily... Information is priceless
- Strongoloid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Either way, like the article says, Google IS the company to beat at the moment. They've set the bar really high over the years, and it confirms the adage of "if it's a good product, people will use it."
And in this case, when we use it, it makes them a poo-ton of money. - diggtard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If I had a nickel for everytime...
