- douglasr007, on 10/14/2009, -1/+21In beta for 5 years?
- nepidae, on 10/14/2009, -10/+26I have the belief that Google Wave will be just like gmail.
I bet you're looking up what gmail is. - peestandingup, on 10/14/2009, -1/+15Ha, sadly I knew what it was & gave it a real try years ago.
One of the biggest POS social networks ever. - greggerm, on 10/14/2009, -2/+15Anyone else raise an eyebrow to the fact that Google spreadsheets help pass along info about Philadelphia International's air traffic delays and airport status?
- inactive, on 10/14/2009, -0/+9There are lots of people in various Digg threads who are trying to take a giant, steaming dump on Wave. There are those who are trying to defend it as the champion of all that is good and righteous forever and ever amen. What you don't see a lot of, however, is commentary from people who have actually tried Wave. That's a shame, too, because those are the opinions I'm really interested in.
- dinglebutt, on 10/14/2009, -2/+10The best use is to resell it on eBay.
- Tob3z, on 10/14/2009, -1/+9I got a invite today. Can't really do anything without others with it though :(
- SteveMax, on 10/14/2009, -0/+8It used to be OK, until the stupid side of Brazil invaded it. Now, even we, the not-so-stupid Brazilians, have abandoned that ship. Hope it kills all users as it sinks.
- acknotSW, on 10/14/2009, -0/+6Funny you should mention that.....
The only reason I'm going to seriously consider using Wave in my offices is because we can host our own server independent of Google. That being said, I'm really impressed with its capabilities and I know our project and grant managers are going to love it. - cruzweb, on 10/14/2009, -5/+10Wave should be epic.
- douglasr007, on 10/14/2009, -7/+11I have the belief that Google Wave will be just like orkut.
I bet you're looking up what orkut is. - mattmartinez, on 10/14/2009, -3/+7Wave's OK, it really is like a cross between email and IM. The problem to me is there's so few people using it right now that you can't really do anything useful with it. I think once more people get invites or they open it up publicly, it'll be a lot better.
- jboitnott, on 10/14/2009, -1/+5Maybe large corporations that own news organizations won't need to have as many "corporate headquarters" at centralized locations, because so many people can do all their work on programs like Wave with each other.
- Hammerheart, on 10/15/2009, -2/+6In other words, you have no idea was Wave is. Wave is a protocol with which you or Microsoft or Yahoo or etc CAN set up there own server that will communicate with everyone elses. It was specifically designed that way. I'm not sure if the protocol is finalized or not, but really all that Google is doing is writing the first implementation. Anyone else is free to use that reference implementation or go ahead and use their own. http://www.waveprotocol.org/
Use that url for the details. - Loonacy, on 10/14/2009, -0/+4Are you serious? People had to be told how personal computers would be worthwhile.
- Nephersir7, on 10/14/2009, -0/+3Except for the fact that Wave is an open protocol and not a service
- douglasr007, on 10/15/2009, -0/+3or maybe I meant Gmail was in beta for 5 years...
... - erictheturtle, on 10/15/2009, -0/+3People who think Google Wave is simple need to get out more.
- NidStyles, on 10/14/2009, -1/+4From the demo video's I've seen it look's great. I could see dev team's using it to write out code that everyone can see, and comment on while in different countries.
- Frostek, on 10/15/2009, -0/+3I have no friends. Will Google Wave do anything for me?
/looks hopeful in a Zoidberg-like way. - GruntboyX, on 10/15/2009, -1/+4My biggest problem with Google Wave is its a closed system. I can only communicate with friends and colleagues who have google wave access. Its utterly useless. The odds of convincing all my contacts and would be contacts to use google wave are slim. It would work in an office environment where IT dictates the tools used. But for personal use its limited by its closed nature.
Now if it talked to a Yahoo wave, a Microsoft wave and/or my own wave server in my house then ok its pretty cool. But right now i just see this as a pointless waste of R&D resources with limited use. It fails the common sense test. And any time you have to train the public to use the tool and throw your weight around, your doomed for failure. I see this technology being more useful to facebook than google right now. Its almost like the intent of this product is to encroach on that space by adding a social network experience to email.
Its a solution to an imaginary problem.
I dont see this taking off; but then again i thought face book was completely stupid; What the hell do i really know. - bigteebo, on 10/14/2009, -1/+4Same here. I thought it would be some live "dashboard" where it would have WebEx-like features, but I honestly can't find anything useful to do with it. It's like a chunky gmail client.
- VitriolAndAngst, on 10/14/2009, -2/+4Dvorak called and he wants his crank geek shtick back....
"it will never work -- it sucks."
You might be right that it is too ambitious -- but we really do need one hub to be able to centralize all messages to "us." I actually think there is a big need --- however, its up to the marketplace to educate itself and integrate it into what they do -- which is a whole other situation. - esc27, on 10/15/2009, -0/+2My experience with collaboration software has always been that the people, not the software are the problem. Google wave is just a new way for one person to do all the work while the rest either cause problems or do nothing.
- GruntboyX, on 10/15/2009, -0/+2i do know what wave is...I have actually been using it. But the part about the protocol being open was elusive.
But thanks for the link it makes good reading. - Deputydon, on 10/14/2009, -0/+2Wave is a good version of Twitter.
There, I fixed it. - NoNameWorks, on 10/15/2009, -0/+2if people need to be told how useful wave can be they just don't get it. it's a fundamental increment in functionality and really should need no explanation because it is so obvious.
- Krazer101, on 10/15/2009, -0/+1do you possible have any invites left?
- BLeAm, on 10/24/2009, -0/+1Wow, you enlighten me, thanks! :)
- captaincurk, on 10/14/2009, -0/+1Today I finally received my invite to Wave and I am already impressed. Unfortunately I only know three guys on Wave, so anybody who cares to drop me a note at captaincurk@googlewave.com is more than welcome :D
I definitely like the idea of developing plugins for wave which will "sit" on a wave and do stuff. This is similar to developing plugins for Thunderbird, Mail.app or Outlook but this time around it's really easy and you only have to write it once for alle clients there will ever be for Wave!
Power to the developers :D - doctordbx, on 10/14/2009, -1/+2I still don't know what the ***** google wave actually does, and I don't think I'm alone on that one.
- CIMiculka, on 10/14/2009, -0/+1I'll probably be buried for sounding ignorant about new web-related stuff but despite trying to follow the news and reading what I find around the internet, could somebody explain what makes Wave so revolutionary and how it works in layman's terms?
- gardenwife, on 10/18/2009, -0/+1It's so complicated now, they'll have to document the heck out of it to make it as user-friendly as Twitter. Twitter has its uses for those who use it right.
- rpardee, on 10/31/2009, -0/+1Yeah, I find that scary as hell.
- nexmachina, on 10/15/2009, -1/+2Google Wave is gonna kill Twitter! And that's a good thing! Cause Twitter is useless!
- aar0nd, on 10/16/2009, -0/+1In the search box put
with:public - nexmachina, on 10/15/2009, -0/+1Actually it will. You can join user groups from all over the country. Whatever you're into, there will probably be a user group!
- swagv, on 10/14/2009, -5/+6It's always a bad sign when someone has to write an article explaining how someone might actually derive some productive value out of an Internet service.
- NOD32user, on 10/16/2009, -0/+1LMAO - I used to work in the same office as you.
- NOD32user, on 10/16/2009, -0/+1^^ In Oz they show us a Youtube screenshot: http://www.google.com.au/chrome
- jjintheuk, on 10/14/2009, -1/+1cuz I wanna be so cool
- Artz, on 10/14/2009, -1/+1Wave is a new Twitter.
- mdentinho, on 10/15/2009, -0/+0The problem with orkut is that it is almost the same as it was 5/6 years ago when it was launched. Social Media is totally different today and people try to "hack" orkut functionalities to make it more "modern". And that's why orkut is totally crap not because of people nationality.
But I think google is preparing something better as you can see here: http://www.google.com.br/chrome
BTW, I'm brazillian and for me you are the stupid one! - putinlrp, on 10/15/2009, -4/+1That's so cool . I think we can try it and reseller in online shopping site.
http://www.softwarefreedown.com - 3OO13, on 10/14/2009, -5/+1Maybe you meant "had been" and this post is pointless but gmail left beta sometimes during the summer, AFAICR.
- hamstercheese, on 10/14/2009, -7/+2Google is the devil!
- phosphite, on 10/14/2009, -6/+1I can't get an invite, not sure what this is. Has Google somehow enabled everybody on the internet to "do the wave"?
