- Rekop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It has nothing to do with multi-protocol clients, I bet. Look at what Sean Egan himself wrote on http://gaim.sourceforge.net/
"Currently, I'm working on making it as easy as possible for other clients to use Google Talk's voice features. You can expect Gaim and other clients to be interoperable with Google Talk's voice features in the near future."
Why would Google want to make a multi-protocol client anyway, it would probably be a legal minefield. Opening up to third party clients however, that makes sense. - rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apple hired Dave Hyatt and everyone assumed they would make a Gekko-based browser because he was an active member of the Mozilla project. When Safari was announced, however, everyone was shocked (personally, I was also relieved) to hear that it's based on KHTML. My guess is that they simply are hiring someone who knows Jabber inside an out to improve their client.
- mikesum32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Um, what about GAIM ?
- flump, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@pierre: im sure theres a plugin you need to activate to get it to minimize to sys tray.
- EndlessLoop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Currently right now you can use Gtalk on a wide range of different clients: http://www.google.com/talk/otherclients.html
All Gaim really needs to work on is really good working video chats and file transfers. - SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1they hire the guy from gaim and you say "similar to trillan". maybe im too smart for this internet thing, but wouldnt it be similar to gaim, rather than trillian? if thye wanted trillian they would hire the trillian guy.
- junkyinny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1whats the point? aol will just block it. maybe msn and yahoo wont care.. we could have msn, yahoo, gtalk all in one..
- RpgActioN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"GAIM's interface is SUPPOSED to be "lame-o" to the people who want "pretty" due to the fact it's barebones... but for a reason. You can download and reskin it if you wish to make it "pretty" but functionality is key in my opinion."
***** graphics doesn't improve functionality. - pcgeek101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google pwns ... I use gaim currently, and I'd be sad to see its development hurt by this, but oh well. I love the GUI, and the program itself is very customizable. Each release improves by fixing bugs and adding new functionality (little things here and there). BTW, you CAN minimize the program to the system tray, and no, this isn't something that you can argue was "put in after I tried the program" because it has been able to do this for quite a while now.
That all said, I used to use Trillian, but now I can't STAND how slow and bloated the interface is for it, even running on a high-end computer. disgusting ... - cearum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have no problems with file transfers in gaim. Our university also uses gaim on all of their computers, windows and linux. I personally like gaim because of the simplicity of it, which is why I also like gtalk. Simple UI and easy functionality, this makes it easier for me to explain to new users of what to do.
- clumsyninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love Miranda IM. Way better than Trillian or Gaim IMO.
- Nooon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"why would it be similar to trillian if they hired a guy from gaim?"
do you even know what trillian and gaim does?
anyways, GREAT news! - Deicidus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you look at the help page for Google Talk, it has said the whole time that they plan to allow their client to connect to other networks. But since Gtalk runs on Jabber, I suspect they will use transports to do it. I hope so, at least--it seems proper.
- MySchizoBuddy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does anyone know if Google is using its own protocol and uses a wrapper to connect to Jabber. OR is it jabber all the way.
- lament, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I won't use it till it reads Trillian log files."
the .log files are just .txt files easily opened in Notepad. - Nowheredan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For the record, when I said "clunky" I didn't mean I wanted it to be made clunkier with all kinds of pretty bells and whistles. I want it STREAMLINED, as in made small, simple, and easy. Currently I use AIM 5.2 with AIMutation, which allows me to turn off ALL the crap that AIM foists on you. My buddy list right now is pretty much just a small white window with a menu bar, text, and no buttons or ads at all. All the functionality is reached through right-click menus.
GAIM does something similar, but it's not quite as good. I can't make the window as small, for example. And I too was completely turned off by the lack of ability to minimize it to the system tray - the fact that you need to know to look for a plugin to do that is pretty absurd, considering how easy it should be to code. - geekologist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is my first sory on the front page. Thanks alot to all the Diggers who dugg it.
- geekologist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What's up with this user shaynes. They dugg it before I did. I was like wtf? Also, it would be like trillian because GAIM supports as many and more IM services then Trillian. So Google probably wants to make a client like GAIM and Trillian.
- Dabellah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0GAIM's interface is SUPPOSED to be "lame-o" to the people who want "pretty" due to the fact it's barebones... but for a reason. You can download and reskin it if you wish to make it "pretty" but functionality is key in my opinion.
This is great news and I hope to see something sweet come from Google with this guy. GAIM is quite the program for one primary developer to create, manage and keep adding to as the other IM programs keep developing ;) - retr0spectiv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ooooo gtalk+gaim=?
- persecuted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gaim... functionally fine.
Not a pretty UI tho. - MightyGiant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think a multiprotocal chat client would be much more like google. They're trying to achieve this nuetral tool on the internet. Making their own chat service didn't really go in that direction.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just downloaded GAIM and I like it more than Miranda IM... It just look and feels better...
Nothing can beat the ORIGINAL IM apps tho because each and everyone one have something unique to them that you wont be able to use in something like Trillian or Gaim.. - bcool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why would it be similar to trillian if they hired a guy from gaim? Good news new for everyone though. cool.
- fli7e, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I won't use it till it reads Trillian log files. I have enough trouble remembering the homework assignments my friend messaged me last Friday, the phone number for the restaurant I'm supposed to make reservations at, etc.
Trillian's history feature has me forever tied to it until something else is compatible with the same format so I can import and/or convert. - salmonmoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It'll be nice if google strip GTK out of GAIM and build it into gtalk. GTK is painful to have running.
- digitalrao, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0doesn't Gtalk and GAIM already have a function talk over GAIM i did once before but without the VOIP was pretty pointless .. sounds like old news to me ... once Google launched Gtalk and there was posting on Gtalk and GAIM compablity or interprotity .. sorry i cant spell this time of night .. fixing other people mistakes on there computers and more Compaq/HP and Gateways my bone yard!!!! who is next
- geekologist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0From Google's page: "and we are committed to letting users access Google Talk using the client and platform of their choice, as well as to enabling our users to talk with users from other service providers." That is interesting.
- chosenone-, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's about time :)
- mad23dog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought that this is what they were going to do in the first place...
- antiwmac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I swear Google is going to own Microsoft one day. They just keep pumping out killer products non-stop!"
no way, their slogan is "not to be evil!"
google flights microsoft, thats all for now, they are friendly to any platforms, if they developed google OS, THEN they made things to GOOGLE OS ONLY and ignoring other platforms, then they are evil. - MosX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How did anyone jump to this stupid conclusion? Why would Google release Gtalk and then suddenly change their minds and create something that already exists?
- PlayWithFire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah, this doesn't really mean anything, but it would be interesting to see what google does with that
to join the discussion though, i use trillian. Yes, i use it cause it's prettier then GAIM. I couldn't figure out how to skin Gaim with GTK skins (whatever that is) so i am back to trillian. - Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0salmonmoose said "It'll be nice if google strip GTK out of GAIM and build it into gtalk. Uhh, google talk doesn't run native on unix or linux. GAIM is cross-platform. You are an idiot. - celerityfm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Do it. I'm there. I'm so there. It's the only thing holding me back from going full google talk.
- rephlektiv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0maybe i read the wrong linked article off this digg, but all i found was talk about opening up the voice abilities to other networks and sharing the "talk" features, nothing.. zip.. nadda about instant messaging protocols. where do you people conjure up these creative stories? fess up, how many of you are writers for national enquirer?
- quasipalm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I use GAIM, but that doesn't mean its UI sucks. Let's be honest here -- it does look clunky and unfinished. And it's not that I don't like simple UIs -- I love GoogleTalk which is even simpler than GAIM.
Wouldn't Google get sued if they made a server that would send data through MS's / AOL's / Yahoo's systems without their permission? It seems like Gaim can get away with this because it's a little Open Source project, but I thought Google would need permission to do this themselves. - MosX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Hey...MORONS....read:
"We could tell you, but then you'd have to promise to not talk about it... Joking aside, Google Talk is still in beta, and we're working hard to add features and make improvements. We're just not quite ready yet to reveal the other cool things we've got planned. We can say this, though: we believe strongly in user choice and open standards, and we are committed to letting users access Google Talk using the client and platform of their choice, as well as to enabling our users to talk with users from other service providers.
We also want to keep making Google Talk better and we want your ideas and feedback to help make this happen! Talk to us using the Help link in the Google Talk interface. Let us know what you like, what you don't like, and what you'd really like."
I like the whole part about "enabling our users to talk with users from other service providers", meaning, THEY'RE GOING CROSS-PLATFORM AND THEY ARE GOING TO WORK OUT THE LEGAL ISSUES.
I win."
Ever hear of Jabber? I guess not. See, everything you read up there is the goal of the Jabber IM protocol. Gtalk uses Jabber. That's all. They're not exactly doing what you said they will.
I think you lose. - el_jefe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All those who are looking at this as the end of Gaim, need to visit the Gaim webpage for the official word as to what Sean is doing at Google and whats going on to Gaim instead of getting your news from some dudes blog. Get your news from the source...come on.
- Bigfat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't GAIM and libgaim directly connected? What will happened to the development of GAIM? Last I checked practically every third party IM client uses it.
- sgtkillmore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cool
- bunni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WTF geekologist
- bonzinugget, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0had AIM a long time ago, but switched to GAIM after learning about all the crap AOL puts on your PC without you knowing it. I had to stop using GAIM b/c it kept giving me these random errors. I'm using Trillian now, seeing as how they changed their UI - the old one was irritating
- DKasler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0as long as its not as big a let down as gtalk i MIGHT try it... but I have trillian pro already.
Why should I switch to googles new messanger software (assuming there will be one)? To reward them for finally catching up to other software like Gaim and Trillian? I think not. - geekologist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yah so did I. Thanks again to all the people who dugg it. I hope it gets on Diggnation.
- Killerah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They need to make it support xfire too.
- rayde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah this is a stupid post. I don't see google using this as a stepping stone to allowing their client to login to somebody's MSN, Yahoo, AIM accounts (as GAIM/Trillian does). Rather, they hired a guy who has experience with IM clients to work on their IM client. Sounds pretty straight forward.
- oneighturbo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been using GAIM since god knows when.. I did like GTalk but had very few fiends using it. It will be nice to see the future of these two IM clients and more so now that Yahoo/Microsoft are teaming up.
- zerovertex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0CLIPPED FROM gaim.sf.net.... NO MultiIM Google Client... but Gaim will have voice chat thanks to Google!

I (Sean) have been hired by Google, moved to Seattle, and have been working on the Google Talk team for about a month and a half. The goal of Google Talk is to make real-time communication as open as possible, and in that regard, I've been working to offer all of Google Talk's features into other clients. Currently, I'm working on making it as easy as possible for other clients to use Google Talk's voice features. You can expect Gaim and other clients to be interoperable with Google Talk's voice features in the near future.

You don't need to look for a plugin it comes with gaim. You just need to click a little check box, also unbeknownst by some it comes preconfigured in linux to have the tray icon. I don't have buttons or ads (gaim has no ads) all I have is my buddy list and the standard toolbar at the top, and I probably went through less work than you did to having to install a program. But I don't want to get into IM client wars here cause we all know gaim/trillian/whatever is superior to the actual AIM client. -
