- biofriendlyblog, on 10/07/2009, -4/+12Go Google!
- srs2000, on 10/07/2009, -0/+5And if every car is set to charge at 9pm.. you think there won't be problems?
The charging setup is "dumb" right now. There is no intelligence in it. You plug it in and it charges.
Anything that shifts a lot of demand from peak times to off peak times is good. How do you not see the point? - chronopublish, on 10/07/2009, -0/+2That's true, they could - but there is a significant drawback to the EV owner who chooses to sell stored electricity from his car back to the grid, as it decreases the long-term life of the battery pack. Rechargeable batteries, such as Lithium Ion, can only be cycled so many times before their capacity begins to diminish. Since the battery pack is the most expensive part of the car, it is probably not worth it to cycle it additional times just to make money in the short-term selling to an overtaxed grid.

I take cash or cheque thanks. - chronopublish, on 10/07/2009, -0/+1The study was conducted by Pacific National Lab.

Click on "Extra capacity in the Electric Grid" - pinchduck, on 10/07/2009, -0/+1Thanks! Always good to get more information about a subject.
- norman619, on 10/07/2009, -1/+2You must work for Google. Only a company man would say something so stupid.
- pinchduck, on 10/07/2009, -0/+1I'll admit, I'm a bit skeptical, but if that turns out to be the case, then it is a huge shot in the arm for electric vehicles. Do you have a link to the study?
- norman619, on 10/07/2009, -0/+1But people will be charging at all hours since not everyone has a normal work schedule.
- chronopublish, on 10/07/2009, -0/+1Studies have already shown that the existing grid can support 100 million vehicles if they charge during off-peak hours.
- pinchduck, on 10/07/2009, -0/+1When a few thousand people own electric vehicles, that's a great idea. When a few million do, it's a different story.
- climatetweet, on 10/10/2009, -0/+1what is the fuel for electric cars??? we need to think about this as a nation....
- rishid, on 10/08/2009, -0/+1The government should just fund Google and have them do all the work for the country. We would actually get moving in the right direction.
- bchampion, on 10/08/2009, -0/+1@endwellsuck
actually it was conceived by insiders within the company, not by advertisers or marketing reps, and the slogan has been used as a crux of their company. its not a business strategy, its a moral code
According to John Battelle's book on Google, The Search, the phrase "Don't be evil" was not coined by Sergey Brin or Larry Page, but rather by Paul Buchheit, the engineer behind Gmail

- neolithicdigger, on 10/08/2009, -0/+1I see two possibilities
Google has found some scope to better the charging process, something most of us might not think of( I am in that group).
or
Google has found some scope for ads, linked to charging of cars. - chronopublish, on 10/08/2009, -0/+1@lorddazzer
Huh? Off-peak hours are when most people are asleep, not working. Of course they'll be inclined to charge during those hours.
If not, they will have incentive to do so by cheaper electricity rates. - rheaume, on 10/07/2009, -1/+1But but electricity has to come from somewhere!
/Moron - inactive, on 10/08/2009, -0/+0If you have a carry over plan you are getting ripped off...unless you are one of the VERY small minority whose monthly usage varies some huge amount.
- anthropodeus, on 10/07/2009, -2/+2the really interesting part of the article came at the end, when it mentioned that cars not in use could be used as distributed energy storage
- lorddazzer, on 10/07/2009, -1/+1@chronopublish
And you're honestly expecting everyone to charge during off peak hours?
Just ask yourself...
off peak hours = when people go to work
which means you drive to work
which means you need your car
which means you can't charge it.
Unless there are going to be charging stations in parking stations everywhere, I don't see how charging during off peak hours helps. - chronopublish, on 10/07/2009, -1/+1Correct, there would not be problems until we approach 100 million EVs on the road.
The amount of electricity used in the afternoon is much, MUCH higher than is used at night. The disparity is so great that EVs will have no impact on the grid whatsoever for the foreseeable future.
I don't see the point because EVs already have software on board that shifts charging to off-peak times: a simple timer.
This google software is a classic solution in need of a problem. - inactive, on 10/08/2009, -1/+0Why? You meanq just how they fix the problem of Paypal's monopoly with Google Checkout? Or how they improved streaming video with Google Video instead of YouTube?
- yerdaddy, on 10/07/2009, -3/+1If you need energy for your battery, you need energy for your battery. No software is going to help that.
- inactive, on 10/08/2009, -2/+0How pathetic are you that you mistake a MARKETING slogan for an actual business strategy?
- Waffleskates, on 10/07/2009, -5/+2ALL GLORY TO THE GOOGLE
- wreckosaurus, on 10/07/2009, -8/+5Google is the microsoft of this generation.
- bchampion, on 10/07/2009, -7/+4Google's motto is "don't be evil"
Microsoft doesn't have a motto because they're too busy trying to screw over customers and competition
Google is NOT the Microsoft of this generation - chronopublish, on 10/07/2009, -7/+2Am I the only one who sees no point in this? Just set the car to charge between 9PM and 12AM and you'll never have to think about it again. The grid always has plenty of extra capacity during off-peak hours.
- jboitnott, on 10/07/2009, -11/+2In the future we will be buying miles for our electric cars the way we buy minutes for our cell phone. I'm just hoping that they have "carry-over" miles the way they have carry-over minutes.
