- GopherChucks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I thought the big G was all about defending our privacy against the government? Of course, they don't necessarily have the same crucial information a group like AOL has (subscriber = more info). I mean, aside from your IP, google is pretty much anonymous.
Meh, I guess if you register an account and upload a bunch of *****, then you're a juicier target, even for the government. - acurism, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7unlike microsoft and yahoo,
Google has fought for its users privacy. - samgab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I find Google's stuff to be a great free package, all combined. Writely, Google spreadsheet, Picasa, GMail.
I don't use GTalk, though. I would, if any of my friends used it, but they all still use Windows Live Messenger, for some reason... - terminalpariah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The only kind of data that Google is interested in is aggregate data. They are really interested in things like, "85% of corporate communication is done by IM", or "Google Talk's file transfer never gets used by corporate users."
Nobody at Google, Microsoft or the NSA gives a flying f*ck about that spat you guys had because it's SALLY's job to order new pencils, but she didn't, so DAVE had to do it, even though it's not his job, and why doesn't Mr. Khan notice when DAVE goes the extra mile, you know he's been bucking for that promotion!!! - mikeabundo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4We may be digging on our own computers, but the geographic Long Tail of Earth's one billion Netizens uses cybercafes. A purely browser-based easy-to-use free collaborative office suite would be perfect for them.
- apotropaic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"i am not about to risk my corporate domain email to a 'free' and 'unsupported' service."
Dude... you put your corporate email on this?! LOL. Try not relying on a free beta service next time for something so important. The only reason you are against this service and probably google now is because you would like to blame them for this problem, when in fact... you're the one who made the mistake here and are too embarrased to admit it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -20/+24"It's all hosted by Google, so there's no hardware or software for you to install or maintain."
No Security either. - kazzyD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Looks like competition with Microsoft may really intensify if Google adds its spreadsheets and word-processing applications to the mix. Google Enterprise General Manager Dave Girouard said those applications were "really good candidates" for future releases:
http://digg.com/tech_news/Google_Apps_for_Your_Domain_Is_Here_Threatens_Microsoft_Market_Share - GopherChucks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5It's not google's fault that people can't accurately type an email address. In fact... it would be so great if they included a contact list for people you email on a regular basis... especially if it was done automagically.
- apotropaic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"reasonable speed"
LOL.. when was the last time you ran MS Office and Open Office? In comparison, google spreadsheet and writely are leaps and bounds faster in so many ways. - majormar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have been using this service for months now and I am loving it. Compared to fighting all the spam and web-mail hassle that I had before this is so much easier. Plus you get access to all the great new Google services like Google Calendar when they come out. I dare say Google's hundreds of thousands of servers are much more reliable than the one in my basement. Privacy is a concern. It is not for everyone, but for small businesses that can't afford to have someone managing their email full-time this is great news.
- GopherChucks, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I still don't think google is going to be harvesting information from a company's server... it's their software, sure, but we'll find out soon enough whether or not google is sniffing the traffic. This stuff all runs on my "company's" website, yes? Well, logically, the data would all be stored on my server too. If that's the case, I can defend my rights to my information. I'd have to read the EULA and TOS to be sure, but it's 6:30 here and I've been up all night... so i'm not gonna do that. Just puttin it out there.
- geryon2004, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is just the beginning. For those who complain about Google hosting this and there is no way you would use it, think of this...
Google sells a search appliance to enterprises. It's a pretty beefy Linux box, and easy to upgrade should they need to. Now, after they've tested some of these applications on the public, they can roll it out on the appliance platform. With one purchase (and maybe different license keys I'm guessing) you have an enterprise appliance that can search and index your information, be your mail server and provide collaborative tools like calendar, enterprise IM, word processing and spreadsheets to your organization.
I don't think it will be too long before the Google Search Appliance becomes something like the Google Enterprise Appliance. - mylicon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Microsoft Office Live was previewed sometime last year. Apparently MS thinks it is worth money to make their Office apps web-based. Pretty smart move on Google's part to compete.
- paulmaunders, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@barnis
I've enabled the page creator features today on my hosted dashboard, and it worked fine for me. I had to create a cname DNS record:
www.maunders.net. 3600 IN CNAME ghs.google.com.
That then enabled a new feature under the "services" section on the left hand menu of the dashboard. I could then edit the page and publish it on my domain http://www.maunders.net
I think this is going to have a huge impact eventually. Google's page creator was a pretty cool app for allowing the average PC user to build their own web page, but one of the major drawbacks was the fact you had to publish it on their googlepages.com. By combining it with their hosted apps package, everyone from homeusers to small businesses will be able to manage their own website without needing any special skills or third party help, and the best thing is, if they ever need to migrate to a more powerful hosting infrastructure they will be able to take their domain with them and any links they have acquired over the years. - MalDON, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They also have this for education too!
- tommertron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't know the specific numbers, but MS Office brings in a pretty big chunk of change for Microsoft. If they can get some of that, either through ad revenue or paid subscription, then it probably is a pretty good strategy.
- philo23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2is it just me or do all the little icons have completly wrong alt tags,
gmail has Google checkout,
Google talk has adsense,
Google callendar has analytics,
and page creator has site search
maybe more tools to come? - whalesalad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm glad that I got into this early, they aren't automatically accepting new accounts anymore. I've been using Gmail hosted for a while, this is just the next step. Managed to sneak 3 domains in!
- stryck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good thing they do, right! :)
(yeah, I thought you were serious for a while... sheesh.) - barnis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1oops
- barnis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@paulmaunders
can you post more about what you mean by CNAME...any google documentation of these steps? - Harlequn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that doesn't mean they can't or won't make it secure.
They need to make it clear to their users that the users data is secure at google and it's encrypted and only the user can see it. They'd get a lot more users if they did that up front. - ConEEE, on 10/12/2007, -16/+17"Please, come and upload all your important information about your business or University so that we can reveal it to the NSA and/or our board of executives."
It's in the small print! - larah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0people are making the point about concern with google disclosing private information... the same problem exists even with your ISP...
- EmileVictor, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Anyone who discounts the fact that Google's information will someday end up with some government or another is just plain naive. It doesn't matter what they're doing with it today, if in a few years the NSA finds its way into their servers.
- barnis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1this is old apart from integration with pagecreator which seems to be newly added to my dashboard...i clicked enable and nothing seems to happen though and it doesn't show up in the upper left under the area where you can switch to calendar, etc...i'm not sure if they've really enabled that for even the beta users. Does anyone know how users of google for my domain can use this?
- raldz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1we already have ours last june.. I saw the post here at digg last May 2006..
- hobnob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0anyone figure out how to get gnotify to work with it?
- SpeckledJim, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Webmail, calendar and an IM client nobody uses = "business suite"? I think not.
When Writely and Spreadsheet have decent feature sets and run at reasonable speed they may have a case. - tmilam, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Did you guys read the ToS?
"Confidential Information. In connection with performance of its obligations hereunder, a party (the "Discloser") may disclose to the other party (the "Recipient") certain information that the Discloser considers confidential and/or proprietary ("Confidential Information") including, but not limited to, tangible, intangible, visual, electronic, present, or future information such as: (a) trade secrets; (b) financial information, including pricing; (c) technical information, including research, development, procedures, algorithms, data, designs, and know-how; (d) business information, including operations, planning, marketing interests, and products; (e) any bugs, defects, security problems, and other issues relating to Google Apps; and (f) the terms of this Agreement and the discussions, negotiations and proposals related thereto. The Recipient will only have a duty to protect Confidential Information disclosed to it by the Discloser: (1) if it is clearly and conspicuously marked as "confidential" or with a similar designation; (2) if it is identified by the Discloser as confidential and/or proprietary before, during, or promptly after presentation or communication; or (3) if it is disclosed in a manner in which the Discloser reasonably communicated, or the Recipient should reasonably have understood under the circumstances that the disclosure should be treated as confidential, whether or not the specific designation "confidential" or any similar designation is used."
Speaks volumes for itself, read it here: https://www.google.com/a/help/intl/en/admins/terms.html
But why should I need to tell you to read the ToS? You always read that before you sign up for a new service, right? - GopherChucks, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Actually, in hind-sight, I would prefer the direct link to google.com/a/ like this article instead of the silly article from Seattle or whatever.
- wewa, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I signed up for gmail for your domain, and boy was I sorry.
Of course, any mail service of this nature, using your own domain name, requrires changes to the MX record of your DNS.
So if something went wrong with gmail services, you would be screwed until they recover, and you better make sure you have secondary mail setup in your MX.
But the biggest scare I ran into, was that, for some reason, after i did the initial setup and then the admin of my new gmail domain account, it kept telling me that my password was incorrect, and then i had assigned admin rights to the gmail account email address. so everytime i requested 'forgot my password,' it would keep sending it to a email address that i coudn't admin, although i could get to the pop account, which kept saying 'no new messages.'
so then i looked for support, even paid support, but alas, try finding any phone number for google - go ahead, 'google it.'
Long story short, i call the main operator at Mountain View, CA, and then she keeps transferring me to 'supposed gmail domain product managers, etc.' and all i ever get is voicemail.
I never did hear back from anyone, via phone, via email, etc.
I finally realized i had to start up a google groups discussion thread, and found that many had problems using this 'beta' service.
I finally gave up on the service, and i dont even login and want to even use or administer this service.
i am not about to risk my corporate domain email to a 'free' and 'unsupported' service.
maybe in the future, when they decide to get 'real' for business, then i may revisit 'google hosting'.... :(
...and i previously thought yahoo hosting support was bad... - Callero, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Posted a couple of times already, marked as duplicate
- crbaker, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3I predict one day Google will be a classic case study at business schools. Why having all the smartest guy in one room, doesn't make for a smartest company.
So Google arguably has some of the brightest and brainiest minds and they choose to spend there time rebuilding the word processor and spreadsheet on a web page. Way to go!
Where is the "Great Google Strategy"? - wickedlogic, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1This is the same thing as google.com/hosted/ was. Where is the news?
- SoBayJake, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1@GopherChucks
It says on the Google site "It's all hosted by Google, so there's no hardware or software for you to install or maintain." It's not something you install on your own server, you use the Google servers. No doubt they could do whatever they want with your data. - wibblewibble, on 10/12/2007, -8/+0Nothing here that is useful in the "office",, page creator? I dont think so. Doesnt come close to sharepoint.
How can any of these be managed by the "company"? - GopherChucks, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1Agreed... I'm crying dupe unless someone proves me wrong.
- steambeak, on 10/12/2007, -17/+5thanks alot for the post. looking forward to trying it out.
- Pother, on 10/12/2007, -17/+0And what about Customer Support?
When a company needs to actually TALK with a Google representative to get some help, what's the phone number?
Oh WAIT! That's right.
Nothing goes wrong with Google's services!
So they only have a email support that feeds you canned responses.
Maybe I'll go see if they've fixed my G-mail account so I don't receive similarly user-named person's messages. I've only been waiting over a year for an actual person to reply to my attempts to get support; so long that I gave up on Google to provide anything but SEARCH long ago.
Can't wait for the stories of companies getting screwed by their lack of support. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -26/+4"It's all hosted by Google"
