- slashbot, on 11/29/2007, -0/+10*whoosh*
- joerod, on 11/29/2007, -2/+11how long till this is on my iphone?
- slashbot, on 11/29/2007, -1/+10You've fallen off the edge of the earth!
- Otto, on 11/29/2007, -1/+9WARNING: This version does not work on several phones. I tried it on my LG CU500, and it just gives me an "invalid class" error. Also, they don't offer any obvious downgrade paths. So, if this doesn't work, you lose Google Maps Mobile... which sucks.
But, you can downgrade by pointing your phone at http://google.com/gmm/support.html and downloading the old version from there. - mathmanjeffy, on 11/29/2007, -1/+9Why exactly would someone not going to study the earth, astronomy, mathematics, or physics need to know what an oblate spheroid is or how and why the Earth qualifies as such? Don't give me a haughty "well that's America for you" while spouting off relatively useless facts.
- tvilda, on 11/29/2007, -1/+8Here I made a video of my windows mobile using this feature. It's working! :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8mbW70LpyQ - mikehill33, on 11/29/2007, -0/+6Wing: accurate within 1300 meters.
- armyturtle, on 11/29/2007, -1/+7From "Soldier": "But after ten seconds, when the GPS chip has got several signals from the satellites"
It doesn't use satellites to calculate your position. Yes, I had to correct you because there is a very BIG difference - this only is accurate up to 1/4 of a mile (not pin point) and at worst accurate up to 3 miles.
It's better than nothing though! - bradleyland, on 11/29/2007, -0/+4You're the kind of person that answers rhetorical questions, aren't you?
- ethanpack, on 11/29/2007, -0/+4Here's a shocker - Palm mobile users, you're out of luck as well (for now at least.) I love my Palm device, but I'll be damned if at every possible chance they don't screw it up or get screwed.
- jabob, on 11/29/2007, -0/+3works great on my BlackBerry 8800 :)
awesome feature! - victorycig, on 11/29/2007, -1/+4That has absolutely nothing to do with it. The service uses available cell signals to triangulate your position. If you get service from at least three cell towers (whose locations are known), then your position can be found, inside or outside.
- murf43143, on 11/29/2007, -0/+3Not working for me either =(
Unavailable. - Otto, on 11/29/2007, -0/+3No, because they don't offer the old version on their normal page anymore. You have to go to that special "support" page I just posted (and which they don't have any normal links to).
- Otto, on 11/29/2007, -0/+3Update: This link works with my LG CU500 phone as well, and gets version 1.5.4 instead of 1.3.0:
http://www.google.com/gmm/apps/v1.5.4/L1/gmaps-Gen ... - leth4l, on 11/29/2007, -0/+3Not working on my Mogul either (OKC) and I have the same message. Maybe a sprint issue?
- SteveMax, on 11/29/2007, -0/+3No, it wasn't. You could get hundreds of better phones at that time, and many of them can still run current software (example: the Nokia N91 was launched over 30 months ago, and it runs S60 3rd, one of the platforms that are supported by this Google Maps feature)
- Cytranic, on 11/29/2007, -1/+4Not working on a 6700 or Mogul (6800)...Keeps saying Location not Avaiable...Pretty crappy IMO..I'm in Miami so you think they would test it here.
- sl9sl9, on 11/29/2007, -0/+3"Your location is temporarily unavailable." - HTC Universal.
- mooninite, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2Why are you being dugg down? The N95 has a GPS receiver built-in. Yes, it will work with Google Maps. Yes, it is better than the iPhone.
- ralphie81, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2Thanks Otto! That's quite the url, but fortunately I was able to text it to myself and extract the link.
Just out of curiousity, does anyone know the difference between 1.3 and 1.5.4? - ApolloImBurning, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2Same result on my Moto Q... tried several times yesterday and today
- Bridea, on 11/29/2007, -2/+4Anyone get this working on the SGH-i607 (Blackjack)?
- PhairOh, on 11/29/2007, -1/+3If it doesn't work, can't you just delete it and get the non location version?
- teh_techie, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2Nice to see it in action. Thanks.
- mpdickso, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2for those interested: Samsung m610 Bell/Aliant, maps work great, my location (GPS or triangulation) not yet.
- mypreciousss, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2Works on my Sony Ericsson on AT&T.
- fitzpatj1969, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2Just don't confuse the feature with a GPS. It'll only work where there's cell service. Don't wander off into the wilderness expecting your phone to show you the way out. It's really just a PS, no G.
- triskele, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2But Google integrated into a cross-platform cross-carrier application. It's not an earth shattering technology, but applying it the way they did is pretty damn cool.
- ScottoGato, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1I was really impressed with the previous version of Google Maps on my Blackberry 8800 with AT&T. The GPS was right on...gave my current location within a couple meters as well as my direction I was traveling.
This is definitely something that I would like to see, but I'm really hoping it's worth upgrading to, because I was more than happy with current version. - KittySpark1es, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1"Your location is temporary unavailable." on my windows mobile samsung blackjack. Google says it should work on Windows Mobile.
- corsairstw, on 12/02/2007, -0/+1Mine too! Pretty exciting update.
- Animental, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1I dub this new application Blue Nipple! Just look at the icon! "John, where are we?" "Hold on, let me check Blue Nipple."
- armyturtle, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1Nice video.
- MicroBerto, on 11/29/2007, -1/+2This is incredible for Verizon users. Verizon cripples their phones (I have a new BlackBerry 8130) so that you have to pay a monthly fee for their crappy GPS software.
Once they iron out all the bugs, it's another great blow in the Google vs. Verizon battle... hopefully VZW doesn't block it. - inactive, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1Key words = SIMULATE
Its still no match for a SIRFstar chipset in your phone.... - elhaf, on 11/29/2007, -1/+2Yes well good luck getting to the location-based api's on any real existing phone. They're "protected" by AT&T and the app must be signed by the "Cingular Preferred" certificate, which Google Maps is not.
- jrinco11, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1worked surprisingly well for me (on my cingular 8525 and att) -- it's close enough for me to be very happy with when I don't have my bluetooth gps receiver with me!
http://www.jrin.net/2007_11_29/google-maps-mobile- ... -- a picture showing google's estimate of where I was vs where I really was - MikeCerm, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1The really crappy thing is that the Mogul actually has GPS, but it's not turned on. According to HTC's download page, they're working on a ROM update to enable GPS and EV-DO rev A capabilities that the hardware supports. Nice to see that they're working on enabling all the features of the device, but it's unfortunate to know that the Mogul could be doing more if it weren't artificially crippled.
http://www.america.htc.com/support/mogul/software- ... - shifty2, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1apparently, its also based on active communication between the phone, the towers, and google maps.
It does not work on my Dash due to compatibility issues. I know there are more than 3 towers in my area and it does not work for me and other Dash users. - mypreciousss, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1Cool! Works on my Sony Ericsson W580i on AT&T! (in NYC)
- davidrools, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1at least the gmail app works on palm (after you install java) but it's not working on my WM6 device.
- geofffox, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1There are many reports of the SGH-i607 (aka - Samsung Blackjack) not working. As many people will soon discover, one of the problems with cellphones is they use customized versions of their OS. Standardization of OS is not always bad!
As I understand, the Blackjack problem (otherwise, a great phone) has to do with the specific flavor of Java being used with Windows Mobile 5. It is very restricted in what it does and does not allow. This was a problem earlier, caused by the Java implementation, with Google's Gmail app for Smartphones. The good news is, over time Google worked around the problem. The bad news is, as a now 'past tense' phone, they might now bother? - palmdoc, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1PalmOS support please.... :)
- tahim, on 12/01/2007, -0/+1from http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py ...
(this list does NOT address the new myl feature)
Google Maps works with the following devices:
* Most Java-enabled (J2ME) mobile phones.
* Palm devices with Palm OS 5 and above.
* All color BlackBerry devices.
* Windows Mobile devices with Windows Mobile 2003, 5.0 and above.
* Symbian Series 60 3rd edition devices. - MikeFromAmerica, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1Actually, you are wrong. For phones like the N95 that have GPS, the new version of Google Maps works pretty much like Soldier said. A couple seconds after you press "0", you get the big blue circle showing your probable position based on cell tower triangulation. In the meantime, it also initializes the GPS receiver. Once it gets a lock, Google Maps displays your more-or-less exact location (usually within 10-30 meters on a good day).
If the N95's A-GPS feature works with your carrier (It does not with my T-mobile USA data plan.), you can get really fast GPS locks (although I think 10 second is probably a bit optimistic). Otherwise, you're looking at 1-5 minutes before GPS locks. - rabiddachshund, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1Mine says it's supposed to be accurate within 1700 meters, but it's actually off by 2100. :/
