- justinp, on 10/12/2007, -11/+18Come on people, grow up a bit and stop using a dollar sign when you abbreviate Microsoft. It's stupid and it makes you appear juvenile.
- spider418, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Go GOOGL€ !!!
- Deputy_Doodah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Microsoft thanked Google for the fix. Let's focus on that. They didn't bluster or sue. They didn't try to downplay the severity of the problem that was patched. They thanked them.
I'm a Linux sysadmin (I say this to show I'm no MS lackey), and I'm impressed and heartened by the MS response. This is the way it should be. Kudos to Microsoft for their behavior on this matter. - Corgana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2wow, interesting read! did anyone else see this or were you all to held up on the whole dollar sign fiasco?
;-) - Iriel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3::Ignoring the improper use of $ in the headline and returning to the story::
It was interesting to read how many people on /. think that the extending of gratitude is stupid because Google should have coded around a known bug in Microsoft's browser. I, for one, refuse to ascribe to that philosophy for the same reason that web developers fight to see a standards as a reality.
</gripe&/gt;</bitch></moan>
If designers simply accept Microsoft (or any company) for all their faults in their web browser that holds the majority of the market, then there is no reason for IE to ever change. Standards should exist as a non-corporate entity so there aren't more cases of people saying "well they should have known to compensate for $foo's error!" because people should be able to write more efficient code without having to automatically compensate for the shortcomings of someone that refuses to change because nobody can make them. - bonzooznob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4@justinp
True, very true... however it is amazing how popular it is.
I just got 2.1 Million results for "Micro$oft" on Google.
http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=Micro$oft - loker269, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I am with justinp on it....
- BrianWGray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did anyone actually read the article? Or did you just read the caption? Google changed their use of style sheets so that it couldn't be used for the exploit that still exists within IE. That's not "fixing" IE. That's changing their product to cover themselves so that they don't get all the bad publicity when someone takes advantage of the widespread use Google's Desktop to spread some code around.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2They shouldn't have fixed it. A short message saying "please visit gmail in a standards compliant, secure browser for the safest browsing experience. We recommend Firefox" would have done wonders.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The more I read comments off this site, the more I undertand how dumb people are. I understand now, how privileged I truly am.
- NeilM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1He's not getting paid to type it without a $ so why shouldn't he type it? Just get used to it. lol
Good read. :) Dugg. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hil-freakin-larious story..... rivals thanking each other, hil-freakin-larious
+digg - dnick, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3not really a comment about the story, but what a bunch of whinny comments. Really guys, a dig at the author for using the $ may be something to include, but to make it an entire series of comments???
- EarthBoundX5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0pwned
- opita, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0NO its M$ thanking G€!!
New G€ = Google... i'm so bored - SupaDawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0so there's the secret to getting a digg to the front page. Insult Microsoft and praise google. it all makes sense now.
- compu73rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$ M$
I hate Micro$oft and will forever use the abbreviation. ALl of you who thinks it's childish are stupid. How is using M$ childish? It's merely a way of abbreviating a company's name and expressing your feelings for them at the same time. It's clever, not childish. M$M$M$MM$M$MM$M$MM$ Microsoft has too much money and maintains evil monopolies. When they change that I'll use an "s" instead of "$" - one111one1one11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1LOL @ Spider418
- harrisbradley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is common business pratice, right? Am I missing something? And screw PriceRitePhoto in the ass.
- RollingRock60, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thats why google will own the world!
- gonzo_leben, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0There should be love, not hate, between computer giants.
If more companies worked together, wouldn't alot of new products be better.
I'm not saying that a company (Microsoft) should put out flawed software (Windows) and rely on other people to fix it.
IMO - mad1stl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0So most of these douche bags are ragging the $.. not reading the Digg.. then commenting? Hillary US!!! ;)lol
- neurokaotix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Goo$le is always trying to make Microsoft look bad.
- neurokaotix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"we just have lots of MS brains here."
Better than being at slashdot where 80% of the readers ride the GPL's virtual dick. - galfridus73, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1In other news: Satan wote is his blog "Please send space heaters. We're freezing down here."
- reclusivemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1The reason for the $ is simple; MS can mean many things. M$ means Microsoft, everyone knows that.
- theImposs1ble, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1yeah everyone loves to bash MS. if you work in computers, you wouldnt have a job if it wasnt for them... so suck it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Alkiver IP: 68.238.52.70 has been banning anyone who edits his warez page! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Cracking_Force
- sporkman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0no dig just because you used the dollar sign.
- rhyno2000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"M$ is clever"
ROFLMAO!
Someone should analyze the average age of the digg user. My guess is that it's down to around 19.5 years old. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1M$, YOU GOT PWNED!!
- BananaWind, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0sigh...where is humanity headed.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1This is bad that Google made a fix for IE while M$ is still working on it. Does this classified as a PWNED by Google?
- claco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Godwins Law: As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1
Diggs Law: The more stories and comments posted to Digg, the resemblance it has to Slashdot approaches 100%. - dshigure, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0M$ thanking Google, hmmm...
A chair hurled through a window with a "thank you" note tied to it? - DrEbola, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0You might as well stick a dollar sign somewhere in the name of every business, since that's what it's all about. I'm assuming the people using $ signs pejoratively will be happy just to earn a wage. For you, profit is a foreign, mystical quantity that you hate because you don't make it.
- SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3just because you spelled it with a dollar sign i am not going to dig this. the people who write it like that are usually using windows when they do it. so you dont like a certian software company. get over it. you can sit around looking at penguins all day and touching yourself, or you can quit making computer software such a major issue to you.
- gluon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I will never digg any article with the M$ in the title.
- claco, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Fine, no Micro$oft. How about MickeySoft or MicroShaft?
- Hitchhiker90, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Am I supposed to be impressed that you use a dollar sign instead of the letter S? I suppose your another one who joined that ban wagon of Microsoft haters "just because". Idiotic title posted by a digg member, no digg. Learn to spell and you might get one.
- pils01, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1M$ should outsource the development of their products to Google
! Ahhhhhhhhh - PAStheLoD, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0As long, as MS can't make a proper browser, or at least issue a ***** patch in a time frame say less than 1-2 weeks, then the use of $ instead of S seems justified, just a little although :)
- Iriel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I agree with Justin with the exception of stories about Microsoft doing things like supposedly charging to keep your system as secure as it should have been sold as (OneCare) or being taken to court in another country on monopoly charges.
The biggest reason I don't use the M$ symbol very often is that it just isn't very intuitive for typing. I'm sorry, but as an interactive media developer/weekend programmer, I want to type fast without thingking about how to type something in a way other than how it is actually spelled. - mercury81, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0"I will never digg any article with the M$ in the title."
same here, grow up then maybe I'll bother reading your diggs - antiwmac, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0we just have lots of MS brains here.
"I will never digg any article with the M$ in the title."
who cares, it's better than having non-news *****. - MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Lame just for the stupid dollar sign. Seriously, grow up. It's Microsoft, Not M$.
- miseryinmotion, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Now, if they could only fix the rest of Windows...
The same people who use "M$" are the same ones that (usually) love 1337 and it's incarnations. They're usually still in their parent's basement, still in high school, or even junior high. - StarDal, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0pils01: "M$ should outsource the development of their products to Google "
Don't they already rely on Apple for much of their RnD? *grin* - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0why do people think that it is a privilage for them to digg your story come on guys take your heads out of ur asses...
- jkearney, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0"Thi$ i$ $o $tupid. Why doe$ everyone care that he u$ed a dollar $ign. He ha$ bigger problem$, like that fact that he live$ in his mother'$ ba$ement."
