- thedak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7digg is faster because it doesn't have to go through moderators. When did this story show up on the front page vs. when it was on slashdot? (I don't even read slashdot anymore.. but the bashing of the opposing sites thing is getting really damn old) Digg and Slashdot serve different purposes, why does it have to be some kind of epenis competition? Slashdot tends to have intelligent discussion about the story, Digg tends to have AOL kiddies screaming "LIK ZOMG TAHT IZ SO C00L!!11cos(360)". They serve different purposes, relax and just enjoy the stories for what they are.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5About .... 6 hours after digg posted it, it showed up on slashdot. Everyone on slashdot claimed it was "slashdotted". =D
- mazboot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Always digging sheer presumption and hubris-- the less bridled, the better. Unless 'Digg Effect' has already become a ubiquitous term for server overload, the way 'Kleenex' has become generic for 'facial tissue'.
- leonbev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2About a dozen different tech sites reported this around the same time Digg did. You guys really give Digg too much credit.
- DisembarkedOne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3wow get over yourselves.
these pothetic self masturbatory posts are pointless
"digg is the best" "digg is the bomb"...
digg is not the only place for this kind of information around the world. - stark23x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I saw it on three tech sites before Digg. Within 6 hours of going live it was linked by THOUSANDS of sites. It was a Google project...anyone who believes Digg shut it down all alone is dreaming. Of course it was going to be huge...it;s frigging Google giving something away.
- nature, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I hope it dosn't become the next myspace."
Digg is already well on its way there. - SerialMartini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hope 'Digdotted' becomes the standard term. I'm sick of these moronic flame wars between Slashdotters and Diggers. Both have their pro and cons (Like /. being full of elitist morons, Digg being full of morons period). Ugh, what a bunch of idiots.
- liquidedge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It was every site in the world posting about something new that Google launched. Neither Digg or Slashdot can be completely credited.
- ileadyouth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1same thing happened with google analytics - for almost a week straight. this is definitely not due to digg.com, its due to people signing up. Google Pages was all over the news sites, as well as blogs, digg, slashdot, etc. To say that its because of digg that they are down is assinine, or, as others have said - stupid.
- Kitsune818, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"way way much faster"
double-plus ungood. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I doubt it was the "Digg Effect". Google has routinely pre-planned a certain number of users before they close off a new service. Google Web Accelerator and Gmail were both rolled out in a similar manner.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@ achille, no way dude, it was posted 13 hours later on /., digg beat them by 13 hours stright.
good job digg! - knid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Oh, and digg cures cancer, gives you a better sex life, and makes you rich.
Yay digg, the source of all that is good in the universe.
Stop circle jerking about the so-called "digg effect". - azharc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice digg!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I never realized how stupid people are on digg...until now
One other thing... the more you guys digg this the more credibility digg loses. - aptiva, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1actually, This was a combined hit from digg, slashdot and about every self respecting geek on the internet....
- drawkbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1digg is the best thing for slashdot and /. for digg. They are an echo chamber. Check their traffic on alexa in comparison. Just like Google V MS and MS v Sun and MS v Apple etc they all are rivals that actually help propel each other. Like East v West Siiiiieda! competition junkies.
- databyss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think it was mostly because it was google. I'm sure digg and /. played a part too but google fans are always scanning domain registrations and URL combos looking for the next google thing.
- nature, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Digg had credibility?
- drn666, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Digg tends to have AOL kiddies screaming "LIK ZOMG TAHT IZ SO C00L!!11cos(360)".
Umm.. isn't that a little bit high-brow compared to most Digg comments? - shuai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome article. Glad I got the digg early. :+digg:
- timewarrior, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg is fast and has more content than anyone else.Credibilty is not an issue as most users are good at judging the news.Outsiders may find this lame though.
- stoops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol, cos(360) was good, but I would have also expected sin(90) or sin(pi/2), so I'll give you half marks. ;)
- devnullius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0damn' - how does google keep introducing stuff without me knowing it on forehand... But I've got at least pagecreators@gmail.com
- symmet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe it was digg-dotted.
- drn666, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This has nothing to do with any 'digg effect' - get over yourselves. This story is everywhere and that's why Google closed it up.
--digg, reporting as lame because the poster is a loser who sensationalized the title. - Nation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It is too arrogant to say it was the digg effect; it was digg+every other geeky community on the net.
- apotropaic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why doesn't digg add a click counter to stories? So you can compare clicks to digg ratio!
- halc5s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This info was posted all over the web, I highly doubt it being on Digg was the only factor.
- gbphoenix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the site was suffering pretty much right away after it was put up there, so I'd agree that it was a combination of things but being on digg + slashdot probably didn't hurt
http://ipods.rocks.it - cprior, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Unless Digg gets threaded discussions and a "Funny" rating for the comments Digg.com will /always/ be no. 2 -- behind alterslash.org.
- pwallroth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This service is crap anyways, no need to sign up. Maybe if it is improved really quickly it'll be rectifiable but as of now it only makes pages that look like they are from the early '90s.
- computerdan000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Lets all jump on the "digg army" bandwagan and pretend that no other news sites are running this story"
I have to agree. I had this story on my blog (dankeenan.blogspot.com) at 10:31 AM today. - stoops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sorry, take out the sin(90), my bad.
- CaughtThinking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the party over this homepage creator is pretty lame. the service copies ideas pioneered years ago, by many other groups. even check out the FCKEditor, a tank of javascript that puts an entire HTML toolset in the browser, and it's open source: http://www.fckeditor.net/demo/default.html
I can't stand how Google gets all this free publicity for basically farting out half-baked ideas. - sygyzy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very cool software. Web 2.0, fancy javascript, everything you know Google to me. For the advanced user, nothing too thrilling. To the person who doesn't know how to make a web page but wants to have a small site for their store or hobby. This is where it's at.
- Tetra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is this the future of news aggregator blogs? A race to see who can get their users service before the site gets taken down?
http://bsalert.com/ - mpancha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0couldn't this entire "digg" have been a comment on the already existing Google link? I find myself wishing Digg wasn't user driven and rather editor driven more and more as the days progress.
no digg, and reported as lame. - anarckie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0/lame
same thing happened w/ Google Analytics - and not because of Digg. - cprior, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0People shoudl realize that /one/ valid usecase for digg.com is to submit stuff you want to keep an a shareable bookmark thingy. I don't want to know how much cruft there is in many users profiles.
Would be nice to have a discussion/exchange about how people use. But as the comment system prevents user exchange this won't happen.
Digg is loke a shopping mall: Many people there, but "the system" prevents social interaction: Trying to protest for a pro-bono case in a mall is as useless as trying to start a discussion on digg.com.
Digg.com is anti-social and therefore evil! - mcewen98, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"the party over this homepage creator is pretty lame. the service copies ideas pioneered years ago, by many other groups. even check out the FCKEditor, a tank of javascript that puts an entire HTML toolset in the browser, and it's open source: http://www.fckeditor.net/demo/default.html

Yes, but where does that tool give you free hosting with a decent domain name? I have seen that editor (or something like it) embedded in some CMS products like Drupal, Mambo, etc, but google's interface is far easier to use and much cleaner. It's for common everyday computer users, or people how want to throw something quickly online and have reliable hosting and bandwidth. Less is more. - timewarrior, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Less than 24 hrs and they are out.It was because of Digg that everyone knows of this early. Thanks to slashdot and others for carrying the momentum.
- ArthurSucks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought it was great. I was reading the terms of use last night around 11:50 and the date was for Feb 23. I had like 5 minutes to abuse my account!
- blindog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0First launch, you always start with a small audience. Google just underestimated how many users would sign-up.
- timewarrior, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Best News Ever!
- lumpy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think this was the "pr effect" this story is everywhere
- Hoohoonick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Or was it because every geek in the world has the google blog in their rss reader?
Reported as lame. - Guder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Just a thought.... Do you think they will try to make this into myspace?"
They already have that in Orkut. It's a friends refer friends only site though. - justice7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is lame. Lets all jump on the "digg army" bandwagan and pretend that no other news sites are running this story
