* If you choose to enable Search Across Computers, Google will securely transmit copies of your indexed files to Google Desktop servers, in order to provide the feature. If you all had read Cnet interviews with google then you'd realize that Google keeps permenant copies of all data on their servers. They do NOT delete anything EVER. Oh and they track everthing you have ever searched for to your IP address. Ever search for monkey porn? Google keeps that information forever. It's only a matter of time before all that information gets a subpoena. Remeber google keeps everything.
So why the heck would anyone use a feature that ships off to google an index of all your files? Their privacy policy doen't prevent them from reading your data and giving to government officials. Once your information reachs Google, its becomes Google's information for all eternity.
Think about that. And no I'm not making any of this up. Do your own research and you'll see everything I've said is true. - Gekster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is not 3-rd version of Google Desktop. This news article about new gadgets for Google Desktop.
- pacificdave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3damn.... i've been using Google Desktop Search for the last 8 months or so and it blew WDS away. on my computer it's both far more accurate and faster. for those of you complaining about hogging system resources.... bull crap. when GDS fully opens up when your computer is at idle it still only uses at max 16meg. when it sees you using your computer it hovers at about 5-6meg in the background.
for everyone complaining about sending personal information back to their servers then just turn "Search Across Computers" off. how hard is it... you're given a choice so stop dogging a perfectly good desktop search app.
some also say "Why use desktop search apps? You should just categorize everything into folders." well, most of us do but over a few years of storing files for both work and home stuff... a lot of it gets forgotten. hell, most of it gets forgotten after a couple of months if you back all hard copies to digital and save all your emails to your home comp.
personally.... Google has never committed a sin yet in my book. they're walking a thin line with the whole China deal but all their linked results were getting blocked anyways. pretty soon Google would have been blocked when China figured out Google Cache still worked. Google has put it's business on the line to fight for the public's privacy with the U.S. Government... while Yahoo and MSN will turn all your information over in a heart beat. if anyone was to hold all your information on the internet then Google would be your best bet. - Mutifus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Play multi-user games (Tic Tac Toe)"
How exciting, and there was me thinking of going out and buying Quake IV... - pierre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Windows Desktop Search is actually a great little app. Its basically like spotlight, but for windows. Results start popping up in a window as you type and it finds everything. Some people might not need it, but it saves me a lot of time at work when I'm looking for old files or text buried within a file. Not a windows fan at all, but this is a TON better than the original search function built into windows.
- osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2google desktop is a serious security risk! NO ME GUSTA

Wake up and take notice.
This information is kept "forever" and its tied to "you"-personally.
Nothing prevents google from sharing this info with the govt or anyone with right price ( read Chinese govt ).
As we are spending more time on-line, privacy is becoming a major issue. I'm sure Yahoo didn't promise to send anyone to Jail when they signed up for a miserable mail account, and looks what is happening. So do not be complacent and think it doesn't concern you, as you may have lots of time to think about it inside of a prison cell.
Please do your part in understanding the implications and voicing your concerns. This is a big deal. Make some noise and stop the erosion of your rights all in name of profit and money.
However, comared to it, microsoft search sucks balls.. - beforeseven, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"I am too scary to upload all my indexed contents to their servers......
Never felt before about GOOGLE this way... But sure is really becoming scarry...company."
Your index is kept on your local machine... NOT Google's servers;
I find the desktop sidebar to be nothing but a useless diversion, but the search function is really good. It beats the pants off the normal Windows search at any rate. - enovakrss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I am too scary to upload all my indexed contents to their servers...... "
"Used it for months till Windows Desktop Search came along"
lol, it's safer for sure - jkirby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hmm, too much like google having a record of your entire computing life (see below from Google Desktop Privacy Policy)

- ab500, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Uploading to google? Anyone thinking this is a little too much information in one place... all your search results, all your chat history, all your e-mails, an index of all your desktop files. What happens when someone gets your google account password and has access to all your personal stuff. Google is learning a little too much about me as of lately.
- zeospike, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The last one killed my system to a crawl and ate up too much memory. I think I'll pass for now.
- Elohir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The desktop search is amazing, far more useful than most people realise.
However having all the rubbish included isn't for me, if I wanted bloated and feature-creep search/software I wouldn't be using google in the first place. - johnwp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I want Google Calendar
- Ronin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OMFG google will be the next Microsoft! Quick Run!!!!!
- CupofDice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I could never get Google search to work. WDS is integrated with XP, and the searches are fast. Also it is not always about searching for files, but getting to them faster.
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Excellent. Can't wait to get home and upgrade.
- salmonmoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Google Desktop 4.2006.206.1555-en looks like version 4 if anything
- john117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Google Desktop 3: Because We Still Don't Know Enough About You."
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1kloper: I'm of the opinion that people think it's "crap" because it's not particularly pretty. Black text on white background.
Personally, I like the GDS sidebar well above any other sidebar apps out there, because it displays the information I want to see in the simplest form I want to see it in. Text scanning is easy, I've been doing it all my life. Learning a whole new set of icons using some low contrast color scheme is both annoying and worthless to me. - amohongos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I never thought I'd say it, but in this case, the Microsoft product is better. I use Windows Desktop Search, and I can tell you that it's a million times faster, unobstrusive, and doesn't have all the bloated crap like the Google Sidebar.
Plus, you don't have your personal info to the company servers, unlike Google Desktop. - protocolor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sorry, i meant any web browser.
- Marlon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1come on guys, three letters -- SDK.
They are trying, maybe not hard enough? - protocolor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1baseless, the google sidebar is an optional view. so for those people who 'dint[sic] want clutter on their desktop' they can turn it off.
- protocolor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1supdadawg, indexing on idle is something google desktop does also.
- aliguana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1why would Mac users need this? spotlight, dashboard etc are better. I wouldn't use this on my Win box, and I hope there is a way to turn off Vistas sidebar thing too... hate crowded desktops.
- Raian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use this at work-- but the corporate firewall makes the thing virtually useless--
- protocolor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1google desktop actually does need some work. deleted files are still returned for some queries, or moved files are returned linked to the wrong location. and some files don't even show up at all (not weird files either, just ordinary mp3's and whatnot). and i cant believe searching across computers requires the index to be uploaded to google servers.
if you want to search your computer from anywhere, download foldershare and if you have google desktop search installed, foldershare puts the search bar in your account, so when you log into foldershare, you can query your computer from any web site. and download any result. encrypted too. - LCmidas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it's all in how you set it up. i usually have multiple windows open, and i have the quick launch plugin that allows you to place shortcuts in a folder (this is how i choose to use it, anyway), which it then displays vertically on the sidebar. faster than the start button, and i don't have to minimize everything and go to the desktop to open an application. i used to use 'run', but that gets tiresome if you clear your cache regularly. you guys who complain about it being oversized...i have a 10.4 in screen on my laptop, and the only time GDS is minimized is when i'm reading an ebook.
- JonathanAquino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm going to uninstall WDS and give GDS3 a try. One good thing I will mention about WDS -- it lets you set the url of the search engine you want to use.
- FullMetalMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like it and use it!
- jawsomemax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"It's really good to search for files. It only takes a few seconds and it searches within the file!"
welcome to Mac's Spotlight, instant search that searches within each file.... - nagu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I stopped using Google desktop on privacy concerns. It was fast and good(not to mention the bloat). Now the search across computers.... - the way I understand is that you need to install Google desktop and they talk to each other - mutating monsters. Pretty scary....
- brelfielfan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Why such the big fuss over privacy? Are you storing child pron or doing other illegal things? Google said they won't share your info, and if the gov does decide to force their way in and view your stuff, why should it matter? They aren't going to jail you over sappy love letter to your girlfriend, and if you are so paranoid about your privacy, stop doing illegal things. And if you are worried about financial info being looked at, the gov can get that anyway without going thru google.
- mdyoke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Who searches for files on there computer, anyway? Do people still save everything they download to a single download folder? You know, if you'd just learn to make new folders & give them names relitive to what they contain, you wouldn't have to search for files. Oh, and while you're at it, do the same with your start menu."
There are also a select few of us who create original content and don't just use our computers to download stuff from the Internet. Plus, searching through folders destroys your focus when you are doing something complex like writing code. - kloper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been using google desktop search for a while now. It's pretty resource intensive for the first day while its indexing all the files on your hard drive, but afterwards it's alright. Very useful for school work since teachers usually have class notes as pdf and i can instantly search all of them.
I find it odd how people are considering this 'crap' though. Remember kids, form your own opinion, don't just mindlessly repeat what Kevin and Alex say. Seeing things like "They really aren't a search engine... They are more an advertising company" is just odd. Well i'll be damned, there I was thinking Google was a search engine, boy was I wrong! - chozsun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Did anyone else felt underwhelmed for the previous version?
I thought it did a whole bunch of nothing. The only thing I like is connecting the picture displayer to my pr0n collection. But without a second monitor, it eats up way to much desktop space to be effective. (I know about the auto-hide feature and I hate auto-hide.) - protocolor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1brelfielfan thats the most ignorant thing i may have read on digg.com.
today. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0HORRIBLE... bunch of crap all bundled together...google is really getting it WRONG...
people dint want clutter on their desktop! I love gmail...like their search tools (offline/on line)...but this is horrible! Google FOCUS On your core competencies!! - racerxyz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0with google's "never delete" policy, sounds kindof evil to me.
- zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The thing is I don't have a prob with google. I have a prob with the US Government and there
willingness to find and subpoena any data from anyone at anytime for no good reason.
