- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18They were all about search but they weren't very good at it. Google is all about search and they have the algoritihims and results to back it up.
- Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16haha... not quite
I'm pretty sure their main priority is making money, which is proven by their 'selling out' to the chinese government to have a hand in the huge chinese market. I guess one could argue that the search engine is their main priority as a project, because it brings them the $$
Don't get me wrong. I still love google. Its been my homepage for 3 years now. I'm just being realistic: Google is a business first, lets not forget that. If I were given the chance to dominate the humongous chinese market with my search engine, i would probably take it too, even if it meant dumbing down my own search engine for the purpose of concealing negative aspects of an oppressive government. We're all in it for the $$, well, 99.9 percent of us at least. - engalicorn, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17Altavista was totally all about search and look where that got them.
- gamabunta, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Actually, there a targeted advertising company. How do you think they make money?
- engalicorn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Its like the stock market. Google is Diversifying. However nothing they do is as good as Google Search.
- kindrobot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6When did Hurley from Lost start writing headlines?
- Mouche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Digg.com is gaining!
http://www.google.com/trends?q=digg%2Cslashdot - birdwatcher3000, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9And I thought they were out to conquer the world.
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Wow, four new things to play with.
Think I'm having a Googlegasm. - Roger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Amazing how searching for a technical term almost always has India in the top spot.
e.g.
http://www.google.com/trends?q=cmos+design&ctab=0&date=all&geo=all - vdxc, on 09/29/2008, -1/+4like Yahoo! then?
- chad78, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3First off, it's a Google blog, not a Google website. There is a difference.
Secondly, there is no such thing as an unbiased source.
Thirdly, haven't you ever heard the repression "Straight from the horse's mouth"?
The real story here is that Google has recognized and addressed the fact that many see them as moving away from their main business model, which is search. They want to reassure the public and their investors that they haven't forgotten their roots.
And, yes, there have been links directly to Apple, and Nintendo, and Sony, and Microsoft websites. Diggs that have made it to the front page in the last few days, in fact. - geekonastick, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I agree google is nothing more than a glorified ad agency. They got popular because of their search technology but they'll stay around because of the number of eyeballs they can get to view ads.
- nitsuj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Totally about search?
I'd say that a business is defined by the methods upon which it generates revenue. Guess what? That makes Google an incredibly successful *Advertising Company*
In a way the search aspect of Google is a free service they provide just like GMail. You'll note that AdSense is never far away in the services though, ready to gobble your clicks.
What's fascinating is that they've created a cool working culture and gained the respect of tech nerds everywhere in that kind of business. - chad78, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Maybe if you are searching for news about Google,
or for Google Earth,
or anti-google sites,
or Google stock quotes,
or Google swag,
or Google toolbar,
or Google hardware,
or Google rumors.............. - ScrabbyDoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Well, south park was right, the level of smug in San Francisco is dangerously high ...
http://www.google.com/trends?q=smug&ctab=0&date=all&geo=all - cybernetic798, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I wasn't trying to be a troll when I pointed out that Trends gives data on search that Google denied the DoJ - the fact that the data is 'approximate' doesn't matter since actually the DoJ asked for only a sample population of data as well. I actually support Google in their battle against the DoJ and am wondering what their motive in releasing this is and how they plan to explain handing out search data since I am definitely not the last person to bring this up.
- djdigital, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Google notebook sounds cool.
- chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Google is ultimately an advertising company, not a search engine.
- abbott75, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Google Trends aims to provide insights into broad search patterns. **It is based upon just a portion of our searches**, and **several approximations** are used when computing your results. Please keep this in mind when using it."
- chad78, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I like that comment. Good call!
(And this coming from the guy who actually wrote the headline.) - toxicredm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I don't get that. Why would anyone search for google on google. You're already there!
- britcomseter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It does, but I think that Jeteye does a lot more. I just made a e3 jetpak that has video, images and links from the show

requires WINE just like using Google Earth - sunimit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1That's Marissa Mayer, Vice President of Search Products and User Experience blogging. Now, if it was Eric Schmidt, he would probably say "Dude, we're all about Ads"
- cybernetic798, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5Uh so how is Google Trends not providing the information that the DoJ requested not too long ago?
- sinner0423, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Search is Google's reason for existence. It's good to diversify, but if you go too far, you end up becoming a jack of all trades, and master of none. It's good to see stuff like this being developed.
- lampshade, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Sad, I was really hoping for the Linux version of Picasa to be in this group :-/
(It runs with Wine, but very poorly and often crashes) - shmatt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1OK, obviously google stuff should be on digg, but this is just free advertisiing for them.
it's not a news article, it's a promo page from google's website... i know that wouldn't fly with Sony or Apple or Nintendo and certainly MS.
I really think submitters should stick to stories from unbiased sources. And stop linking to your blogs! - siouxmoux, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Google vs. Betas
While Betas trends are flatlined. On the other hand google trends is still red hot and still alot of growth.
http://www.google.com/trends?q=google%2C++betas&ctab=0&date=all&geo=all - toby34a, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1What's amazing is looking for stuff like this... and doing the comparison...
http://www.google.com/trends?q=janet+jackson%2C+boobs&ctab=0&date=all&geo=all
So, while boobs is typically above Janet, there is a spike when Janet shows her boobs. But, apparently, Chicago likes boobs more then Janet... - dealunion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Another 4? Wow...but I still think search is Google's best
- jriley101, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1This is why we need something like http://www.digg.com or http://www.oozm.com. I personally think the google bot is stepping on too many stones at the same time.
- engalicorn, on 10/12/2007, -10/+7How dare you belittle Google. Google is everything!

How on Earth do you think Google makes money from just search? Could you please explain where revenue comes from based purely on search? - Agret, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1http://www.google.com/trends?q=porn+lesbian&ctab=0&date=all&geo=all
woot, go australia! - Agret, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Through search? Other people provide targeted advertising but are nowhere near as successful.

I've had a lot more success with Yahoo.

BTW It is good to know that:

Interesting... - pope7, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4Speaking of googlegasms, I made it into the finalist pool for the google davinci quest. Checkmate, bruce.
- breakfastpants, on 10/12/2007, -8/+0Google is just joking around. Can't you see? Look at this, straight from their post:
- Google Desktop 4 gives you another way to improve search, by personalizing your desktop. New "Google Gadgets" deliver an array of information--ranging from games and media players to weather updates and news--straight to your desktop.
Absolutely nothing to do with search--why did they even preface it as such? - MindReaver, on 10/12/2007, -23/+1Who is Altavista?
