Gmail!
Yawn. That one took me by surprise.
*passes out due to fatigue, boredom* - stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -2/+66These comparisons ALWAYS leave out the most important aspect:
Which web-based email puts an advertisement tag at the bottom of EVERY email?
Hotmail and Yahoo, and AOL (again), they all do.
Gmail: no ad tag. - cody50, on 10/12/2007, -10/+72Gmail has Gmail Chat (beta). A very useful service.
- fugazi, on 10/12/2007, -10/+47Gmail clinky? What are you talking about. Its an email client not a desktop, you go and read and write messages. I just want to see what im doing no what else is happening around my message, and gmail seems to accomplish that fine, and better than yahoo mail or windows live mail.
- ckin2001, on 10/12/2007, -11/+48How can you love hotmail? The layout is horrible, and changes every few months. I could deal with it if you had POP3 access or anything that would make it a true webmail service rather than an opportunity to hold a user captive and increase ad-servings. Anyone with a hotmail address on my email list has said they only have it because so many people are used to it.
My fiance uses hotmail for email from her students parents. Its her best chance to claim that she didn't get it :D - CompIsMyRx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34If you use the Firefox Extension Gmail Skins, you can have a customizable Gmail color.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27If it wasnt for gmail, we would all stil be using hotmail / yahoo accounts with 2MB of storage space. And we'd actually be HAPPY to get that much. Gmail (and google) have changed everything.
- Geers, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29I'm a Gmail fiend and probably wouldn't use anything else.
- XiozTzu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21What about secure HTTPS connections, other than gmail who has that?
Plus you can put + (e.g. your email address is joe.blow@gmail.com, you can put in joe.blow+digg@gmail.com and it is still a valid address) in you email address for gmail, is there something similar in Yahoo and Hotmail? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+25Brundlefly got modded down because his comment was NOT outlandishly pro-gmail. Please dont mod me down for saying it.
I love gmail, google, linux and apple. I love anything you groupthink fanboys love. - ubergmr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20It always annoyed me that I couldn't send exe's to myself or others in gmail, until i figured out that
all you need to do is name the exe filename.CANGE_TO_EXE or some other random extension. after you done this the file will send perfectly, that is as long person reciveing it is smart enough to change it back. - gmillerd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Two very good points.
Someday soon when gmail does IMAP, it will be complete. - Recluse, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17I think you can do it with a greasemonkey script too.
- daofma, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19Hence the not scanning anything ;)
- tzon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17One of my FAVORITE features of GMail wasn't mentioned: RSS feed of new mail.
- oslointhesummer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15You CAN skin gmail...if you're using firefox.
- ho0ber, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15"sent on behalf of gmail.com"
I've never gotten a gmail solicited message. I think either a) you're crazy, or b) someone is spamming your @gmail.com account with messages which say "on behalf of [whatever domain I'm spamming].com" - tanmccuin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13I have a 7 year old hotmail account, i give that out for potential newsletters, spam, junk, notifications, and people i don't want to hear from to regularly. see hotmail has it's uses... for all the rest i use gMail.
- kalleanka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Yeah, all info is not up to date on that page.
About Live Mail it says: "IE 6 and up; basic features work in other browsers".
Dude, I use Firefox and Live Mail and for me I have the new layout, not the basic one. (Previously Firefox only saw the basic layout, but not any longer) - Helicobacter, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Is that Yahoo Mail or Yahoo Mail BETA?
Too bad they didn't include Lycos:
http://digg.com/tech_deals/LYCOS_Debuts_3Gig_Email_with_UnLimited_Attachments_FREE
Some other comparison:
http://digg.com/software/Gmail_vs_Windows_Live_Mail_vs_Yahoo_Mail_betas - hurlothrumbo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13gmail is also still only beta, and requires an invitation to sign up.
- Wuss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I've been using Yahoo mail for the past 4-5 years, and gmail for the last year or so.
Best thing about Yahoo is their spam filter. Hand's down the best spam filter of all the email services I've used. You do have to make a conscience effort in the beginning to mark junk mail, but yahoo learns very quickly and I almost never get spam in my inbox now.
Yahoo beta is also nice for those used to outlook. Interface is amazing, both aesthetically and functionally.
However, Yahoo DOES NOT HAVE FREE POP3. On that fact alone, I started using Gmail. I have 5 other email address tied to private domains that I have to use a local email client for (i.e. Outlook), and having to look through all that, and then a browser for my yahoo email was just too tedious.
And yes, I have used Ypops (a gateway to allow pop3 access to a yahoo account), but I found it to be too unreliable for serious use, and having to double check via browser was redundant.
So ultimately, I Gmail wins out for me. - chesterjosiah, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Two words: Conversation view.
- sunyata322, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10myspace mail???? wtf..
- Universal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8At Gmail's current rate of storage growth, it should reach 3GB on September 3 2008, at 14:08:34.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Gmail Wins!!, Next
- whalesalad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Why does that table have to be so boring. Not only is it boring, but its nearly impossible to differentiate where the table cells start and end without Web Dev Toolbar.
- jeriqo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8They are wrong, Gmail does have a phishing filter.
- daofma, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13I don't like hotmail anymore because their spam-blocking has become /worse/ over the past year. It used to be that most spam, in fact almost all of it, was sent to the junkmail folder. Now, however, I get message with CIALIS/VIAGRA /right in the subject/. Tons and tons of stuff about poker get through too.
Maybe they're mad I kept reporting MSN emails as spam... - mikevickrocks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Or make it a .rar archive, and Gmail will be none the wiser. I think GMail only check's .zip archives. I also know on a Mac, you can use .Sit.
- rkcrawf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7thought pop access with yahoo was not free...has that changed??
- onTheJDAR, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I dropped my Yahoo Mail account for one reason: that avatar thing. I hated it. I did not want some eerie silhouette greeting me with each login, nor did I want to create some weir "cool" cartoon Yahoo me to follow me around. I left after sending the Yahoo customer service requests to make the avatar removable; they can't do it.
I switched to Gmail. I don't like the interface, but I am getting used to it. I love the Gmail Notifier, though. - somas1, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9brundlefly76, I just logged into my yahoo account for the first time in 3 years. About 2 years ago it seemed that yahoo learned from google and started using ads that were more subtle but my yahoo inbox is surrounded by 7 ads for things I have no interest in and more than half of my browser is taken up by some stupid Capital One Money Market ad. You find this acceptable? I should not have to use an ad blocker to view webmail. The whole reason I stopped using yahoo mail was because of their stupid full page ads that has to be viewed before you could read individual messages. If you like the outlook-esque look and feel of yahoo live I'd recommend that you take a look at portable thunderbird and pop mail.
- LVsFINEST, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6My hotmail only has 250MB!! How do you get 2GB???
- ZorboMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I love Gmail, but Yahoo's new beta mail has some great features. I love the drag and drop and the tabbed interface. The right-click menu option is nice too.
Overall I prefer Gmail for it's simplicity and speed, but Yahoo definitly has a nice alternative. - shirosamurai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've been spoiled by GMail's label system. As simple as it is, it's very useful and intuitive. It has a simple, clean, unobtrusive interface and it's always fast. The spam filter is top notch. I've probably had 3 spam e-mails slip by in the couple years now that I've had my GMail account. While some hate it, I also prefer their threaded style of displaying e-mails.
I think I'll be sticking with GMail. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Gmail all the way.
- UrlorJkron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Last time I used hotmail was before Microsoft bought it. By then I had moved Yahoo mail, and as soon as Gmail came out I moved again.
Gmail meets my needs. Also I'm not a big fan of changing adresses. - Solan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The flexibility, the sheer ease and the integration with other services just makes Google Gmail the hands down winner. There is simply no competition here. Gmail very clearly beats all other contenders. Yahoo and MSN will have to do be way more flexible and swift in order to compete.
For me, it is just Gmail all the way! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i prefer gmail, i've used the other 2 and i have a live mail beta account, but i still prefer gmail over them because i find it easy to use, the search function, pop3 access and it's pretty speedy :-)
- yathosho, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10my hotmail experience:
1. create account
2. don't tell anybody your email address
3. go to sleep
4. next morning: my first 40 spam emails
my gmail experience:
not a single spam on my gmail account after 1.5 years (and i shared the address!)
i must admit though, that gmail is only my second most used email address - endgame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3YAHOO!! All the way!
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Found an error:
GMail is th only service with free Pop3 service. Hotmail as listed does not support it and contrary to what's listed in the article Yahoo! Mail does not include Pop3 with their free service.
This is a comparison of free services because those are clearly the stats from their free services. - m00dy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4gmail is 2751.740292 MB at the time of writing this, not 2.65 GB, and hotmail is only 250MB not 2GB
whats up with that
gmail rocks, although there is a 10MB limit on file attachments, that sucks - Kanundra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is the biggest fanboi comment section I've seen. There's some very well written comments on here that got dugg down due to not liking Gmail over the others. Everyone has a choice, anything else need to be said?
- jfinke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I don't know about you, but I found it to be dog slow...
I finally switched back to the non beta, non ajax version.
But, I mostly use gmail now anyways. Yahoo has the absolute worst anti-spam. Stuff that is obvious, does not even come close to getting marked as spam. - succubuskiller, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Functionality wise, Gmail is not that friendly in some cases. When I want to right click and open the Inbox in a new Window/Tab, or even another message, while typing an email in the current one. You can kind of work around that with IE using Ctrl+N which, not in FF which I use mostly.
FOLDERS: That was my biggest complaint with Gmail in the beginning. I like to have my newsletters, and emails organized in different categories. Great, but I did not want all of them in the Inbox. The simple solution they fail to provide within their Troubleshooting/Help is that you can achieve the same effect of folders, by following these easy steps:
Create a Filter, set appropriate settings (From/Subject/etc)
Next Step:Check off Skip the Inbox, and Check Apply the Label (choose new label).
Now you won’t have your main inbox filled with newsletters you are not concerned about at the current moment. Hotmail is horrible, most spam ever, but I check it through OutlookExpress so works out ok, but still Yahoo! Mail is my favorite for the fact they don’t break the right click button, even though it is a simple interface. - zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5If it was not for Gmail I would not have email.
I have an hotmail account it's 75% spam.
Hotmails spam filtering is horrable!!!!
I get spam in my Gmail account and 99% of it goes where it belongs in the spam folder.
I get maybe 1 to 2 spam a month in my main mail folder.
I dont know how they do it but thats enought to may Gmail a winner hands down. - truebullfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3whats so hard about sending a text message to your phone? it cost .05 cents. Still dont understand why google doesnt put gmail link on top of google.com so more people can try it out.
I recently switch to Gmail and love it. Archiving and labels are great features. Saving a message but not having to label it or see it on the inbox is great. Plus the search feature works very well. - radiofrequency, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The comparison chart leaves off the most important difference in those three offerings. If you don't log into our hotmail account for 30 days, everything in there goes away. Mail sent to your hotmail account is bounced. You have to "reactivate" it in order to start using and accepting incoming mail again and even then everything you had before is lost forever.
Yahoo and gmail offer permanent storage. It doesn't matter if you log in once an hour, once a week, once a month or never. -
