- Domiko, on 10/12/2007, -5/+110Tip #31: Don't waste those Gmail invites. Those invites will be like CURRENCY in the year 2012, after Google buys the internet.
- theGOG, on 10/12/2007, -6/+50"this Gmail thingie"
Gmail is not a "thingy". It is the Jesus of email. - Domiko, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21@spinxter:
Yeah, but it won't stay dead. - MannyHills, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16just enter httpS://gmail.com, and you'll be brought to a secure version.
- cankillar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Should mention- Some of these require stylish https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2108/
- MannyHills, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Yeah the + is a good technique. I've found that many sites though, will often say your email address is invalid if you put the + in it though. These sites are incorrect, as the + in an email address is not just a gmail thing, but is in fact part of the RFC. Nonetheless, many places do not support it. Some will even allow you to enter it but then strip everything after the plus so it becomes useless. But it's great to use it when you can.
- strabes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12@Ngai & mannyhills: You can also put periods in your email when you sign up for a website. For example, I put a period after the first letter in my email for sites that I buy things from. I have a gmail filter that automatically applies the label "Online Purchases" to any mail that is addressed to my email with a period after the first letter. Saves some time and keeps me pretty organized.
- Ngai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12This one is new to me.
If your Gmail login name was username@gmail.com and you went to samplesite.com to fill out a registration form, instead of just entering username@gmail.com as your email, enter it as username+samplesitecom@gmail.com instead. When Gmail sees a "+" in an email address, it uses all the characters to the left of the plus sign to know who to send it to. In this example it would still send it to username@gmail.com. - cablefish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11the "Find out who gives away your email address with Gmail trick" is pure gold.
I'm still not giving my mother-in-law my real email address.... - wiihuck, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14have you tried following the directions in gmail?
(i ask because it doesn't sound like it...) - Derf0293, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Sweet, I love gmail, these will make things even better. w00t!
- lachcorp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9That is the crux of why Gmail is so good... and I've never had that problem.
Perhaps stop sending multiple emails to different people with the subject "LOL PWND" - dexim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I can't even count how many times I've tried to kill spam, but it always comes back.
- brennankeller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm using 995 and SSL with password authentication and its working fine
- themoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@Domiko
I remember when they were currency, selling for about $100 apiece on eBay - changyang1230, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yeah, you should give her this address:
cablefish+motherinlaw@gmail.com - xxdesmus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Surprisingly good list. I knew about most of the them, but it's nice to have them all in the same place.
- pixelmixer, on 10/12/2007, -11/+15invitations are pretty much worthless now that its, well... open to the public now.
- Cybie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7http://www.duggmirror.com
- D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't know why but for some reason the only word I can come up with to describe this is "Groovy".... I wasn't even alive when people said groovy....
- Derrekito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You guys might also want to check out Google's home page skins @ https://www.google.com/ig?hl=en , (built in feature now). really neat, I love how Google keeps pushing out this free stuff.
- thatsiebguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Works fine for me in Mail.app. I use it as a local backup.
We also pipe our office mail through our Gmail hosted account (for backup and spam scanning) and use Stunnel on our Exchange server to download our email over SSL via Exchange's Pop3 Retrieval (Exchange doesn't natively support bare SSL without paying for a bloated plugin). - benliong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'd tried this with a site which calls me to confirm my registration for a seminar. That person was repeating my email to me for confirmation, and was startled when she spelled out the name of her company in my email.
Fun Fun Fun.
But yeah, it works great. - thatsiebguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Be careful with some of these, like the storage ones, its a quick way to get your account locked as it's against Gmail's TOS.
- Derrekito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2SSLGoogle
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/7429 - hasbeen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You need a program like geasemonkey (for firefox) to install them. So if you use firefox, get the greasemonkey extension (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/748/), restart firefox, and then click on the .js files. Greasemonkey should automatically recognize the script and ask if you want to install it.
On another note, usually these type of articles have a lot of useless additions, but this one is nicely formated and actually has some really cool things. - EmileVictor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This isn't being pushed by Google at all...
- esquilax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1does it work in other mail programs? it's probably your ISP...
- esengulov, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@cankillar
actually only one of them is a stylish script, however I had no trouble running it on greasemonkey - randf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ spinxter
don't give up...gmail forwarding to Mail works for me as well. Mail will occasionally hiccup and not pull gmail, but tends to be a problem with a hotel internet service when i'm traveling. it works from my home cable via airport, and countless wifi spots around the country.
when you reply to gmail from Mail, you can choose to send from your .mac smtp or the gmail smtp. - InstantABS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Google's free stuff is so nice and neat, I've already customized my home page with those. Great :)
- jepizacar, on 08/21/2008, -0/+1nice resource....

- mapkinase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1GTDInbox. Google has already it's own Todo tool.
- thunder7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have started Gmail own little section within my bookmarks.
Love ever tip everyone adds, That is how we lean, Please keep up the great work - onestab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The super clean Gmail script is also cool because you can create your own logo that shows up in place of the regular Gmail logo. (tools->greasemonky-> user script commands) It's pretty worthless but kind of fun if you're killing time at work. I also use http://www.gishpuppy.com/ when sites demand my email address. It generates a temporary email on the spot that forwards to your real address, but can be set to expire after a certain period of time, or canceled in the future. Also, the unique address can clue you in as to who is spamming you. Pookmail.com is also useful if you just need a quickie disposable email address.
- dugem1, on 01/20/2008, -0/+1That's great find

- Atimport, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, pretty useful !
- cayennenator, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Very useful. But my mom told me such things don't worth my attention.
- wphj, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4That's too bad.
It works fine for me though. - brennankeller, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5how so? it works fine for me
- iritegood, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I don't know if this is comment abuse or not but...
I fight spam by creating two email addresses. I change the settings for one (the spam account) to forward all mail to my main account. Gmail doesn't forward the spam so all the spam stays in the spam account's spam folder and only the real emails go to my main inbox. Gmail's spam filter is pretty reliable so that's not a problem. Just make sure to sign for other websites' accounts with your spam account.
Also, you can make a filter so that all mail that has to:youremail@gmail.com is tagged with something like "registration".
You can make as many accounts as you want. One for your work, home, mother-in-law, etc. - chaoskaizer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Find out who gives away your email address with Gmail trick http://www.hedir.com/introduction/about17942.html
very handy XD grats - BigglesPiP, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Very helpful, thanks be to the OP.
- missmorgie, on 10/12/2007, -10/+7ME TOO! I'm glad I'm not the only one. Although I do enjoy reading again and again and again.
- iamshades, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6i feel like ive seen this list about a million times...
- gsenechal, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1The grouping of "conversations" is a nice idea that is poorly implemented. It's weird that Google wouldn't offer an option to turn this off. I get unrelated emails with the same subject line clumped together unnecessarily and it drives me into a geekish anger fit.
Anyhow, Dugg this because I installed the Gmail Manager plugin and I like it. -
