- sputnike, on 11/05/2008, -0/+29Thank god... I just got an email off google saying my account might be deleted... I sent them the info they asked for back, but just to be on the safe side, I'll backup too :)

- yensed, on 11/05/2008, -2/+16Why hasn't Google themselves done this?
- cubanhawkeye, on 11/05/2008, -2/+14worst phishing attempt ever.

- soelinn, on 11/05/2008, -0/+10Guys, do NOT use this tool.
There was a controversy over this tool in the past.
"One" of the developers of the tool was sending the User's GMail Address AND Password to one of his email address for "testing".
I am not making this up. You do NOT need to use this tool. Don't be tricked.
It may or may not be the same group of people. Here is the article.

- wgchinn, on 11/05/2008, -0/+8Since its not a Google product, and the immediate download originates from a .cz address I'll pass.
- Encablossa, on 11/05/2008, -2/+8Goooodbye privacy :|
- soelinn, on 11/05/2008, -0/+6and in the meantime, they steal your password and steal your personal & confidential info.
There was a controversy in the past that "one" of the developers was sending your Email Address AND Password to his Email Address for "testing" purposes.
Do NOT use this. Don't be stupid.

http://uneasysilence.com/archive/2008/03/13052/ - OwdenBowden, on 11/05/2008, -0/+6I would rather use a Google based app than a third party. Nice Idea but too risky in my book.
- lcarsdeveloper, on 11/05/2008, -0/+6Your site sucks, everything's backwards.
- theadvinci, on 11/05/2008, -4/+10Useful...
Gmail went bananas once and deleted some portion of my emails. And yes, it wasn't my fault. And still Gmail's the best. - niznik, on 11/05/2008, -1/+6Because us oldies do not trust "the cloud", don't worry we'll die off eventully
- shanealeslie, on 11/05/2008, -0/+5The world would pretty much have to end before Google lost my mail, but backup options are always a useful option to have.
- motters, on 11/05/2008, -0/+5The fact that there does not appear to be any source code associated with this raises suspicion. To have confidence that this program is not stealing your account details it really needs to be fully open source. Remember that if you've performed any kind of financial transactions using a Gmail account (paypal, amazon, or whatever) someone getting your username and password could do a lot of damage. There is something in the FAQ which mentions that the program "calls home", and says that this is just checking for new versions. In my opinion it is inadvisable to take this on trust unless you can see the relevant source code.
- andrewtheart, on 11/05/2008, -2/+6I trust Google's hard drives more than mine, honestly. But there could be some merit to this.
Windows version works in Wine. That's fortunate -- I prefer the GUI myself. - Neo139, on 11/06/2008, -0/+4This is NOT a good idea. Use Imap to download mails with Thunderbird and keep them online in gmail. That is the best way of backup them without unknown apps
- zadadka, on 11/05/2008, -2/+5Handy for many, no doubt.
Personally, I have Outlook download (POP) Inbox & Sent items from GMail, then archive via PSTs. - ousthouse, on 11/05/2008, -0/+3I trust Google more than I trust my family, friends and government.
- stephenjudge, on 11/06/2008, -0/+3It cannot be trusted unless we can see the source
The idea of this program is great, it looks like it is a well developed tool, especially for migrating from a regular Gmail account to a Your Domain Gmail Account.
I would really love to use this tool, but I am afraid I just cannot trust it or its developers. I appreciate that you are developing and releasing this tool as freeware, but there is too much privacy at stake to trust your software. Many users of Gmail will have used their accounts for many financial transactions and private correspondence. We cannot just blindly hand over the keys to our account to you. We have to assume that you may be collecting usernames and passwords for these accounts in a type of phishing scam.
Were we cannot see the source code of your software this is a perfectly reasonable to assume. It has already been discovered after decompiling another program that did the same job, that the developer was indeed sending collected user details to his own account. The program in question is called G-Archiver, read more here http://uneasysilence.com/archive/2008/03/13052/
If you want users to trust you and use your software, and you would like more donations and input into your project, then release the code. What do they have to hide. - latrosicarius, on 11/05/2008, -0/+3you can do it in thunderbird too. it will save in MBOX format, not PST, though.
personally, I don't like using proprietary format PST anyway - mcosmi, on 11/05/2008, -0/+3i don't.
- IKORKYI, on 11/05/2008, -0/+3ummmmm yeahhhhh
- theHM, on 11/05/2008, -0/+2I've been doing this for a long while with IMAPSize.
http://www.broobles.com/imapsize/imap-backup.php
More feature rich (including SSL support), more mature, and offers support to backup from/restore to other accounts.
No, I have nothing to do with them, other than using their software. - Romanito, on 11/05/2008, -0/+2This might come in handy, but I'll wait until the author implements an option to select the mails I want to backup by their labels. Not all of my gigabytes of messages are worth a backup.
- theHM, on 11/05/2008, -0/+2It's happened before.

Besides, Google could deactivate your account (either temporarily or permanently) and then you'd be stuffed. - lcarsdeveloper, on 11/05/2008, -0/+2My Digg RSS feed has 2 GMail stories next to each other, then an Obama story, then another GMail story. Must be one of those days.
- latrosicarius, on 11/05/2008, -0/+2just POP your messages using any email client (Thunderbird, Outlook, etc). Same thing.
- brettalton, on 11/05/2008, -0/+2Or just use Mozilla Thunderbird. It has great integration with GMail and will download all your e-mails every time you open it. Actually, any e-mail program can do that. Why do you need this special program for such a specific use?
- RobotBuddha, on 11/05/2008, -0/+2Because someone might think an image you post on picasa is of questionable taste and nuke your account, email and all. Happened to me, pg-13 level humor at worst.
- ZMann, on 11/06/2008, -0/+1If Google decides to ever terminate your account, all the trustworthy hard drives in the world won't get your stuff back
- SteveMax, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1There is a gmail-backup-gui.sh in the Linux download; and the GUI works very well.
- dawpa2000, on 11/06/2008, -0/+1Give Gmail a break; it's still in beta.
- diggdatt, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1Even though I have fake information on my Google Account, i've put so much stuff in Notebook, Reader and signed up on tons of sites with Gmail, it would be a pain to set it all up again if I lost it.
Although Google probably has a idea about who I am, by all the ***** I've put into it, so I dont see a reason to use your real name. - latrosicarius, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1really? because mine shows over nine thousand Obaba storys, followed by a smattering of google / solar power / apple stories.
- chowderdick, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1Unlike Hotmail, which will delete every email you have if you don't log in often enough...
- Lith25, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1Seconded...and I'm not sure if it's good or bad really.
- mysticalone, on 11/05/2008, -1/+1new porn site?
- latrosicarius, on 11/05/2008, -1/+1Actually, no nevermind. My idea was for them to do it for you and give you a link to a MBOX file that you could just download.
- latrosicarius, on 11/05/2008, -1/+1this was one of the suggestions i wrote to them about, almost a year ago. they didn't respond
but i doubt i was the first person to think of it - etx313, on 11/05/2008, -1/+1i prefer http://www.gmail-blackup.com
- Morac, on 11/05/2008, -1/+1Yahoo Mail version: http://www.zimbra.com/products/desktop.html
It also works with GMail and works on Windows, Mac and Linux - niznik, on 11/05/2008, -2/+1or like copy/pasting a backup version of a text document in the same text document
or like trusting IBM to backup your data?
Anyhow Google does not need to do this because:
1) They do no evil
2) The cloud never, ever, ever goes wrong. We are to unquestionably trust it (and them)
