http://www.gliffy.com/ - dubski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14This is not FREE. Its ad supported and there will be a pricing plan for comercial users.
See here:
http://www.gliffy.com/pricing.shtml - ThankTheCheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I agree, but it's handy for people like me who use 2% of what visio is capable of, and only use it maybe twice a year for a quick, simply flow chart.
- gryphon5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Next on google's wanted list?
- mikewm1111, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9It's an okay app; especially if you are in a 'pinch' and don't have Visio loaded. However, it is NOT a Visio 'killer' - I wouldn't trade Visio for this 'light weight' app when confronted with a choice; besides I already spent a ton of time collecting all of my favorite stencils
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I use Gliffy. Why? I don't have to install it on every machine. And more imoprtantly, the interface doesn't suck nearly as bad as Dia.
Don't get me wrong, I love Dia for being an opensource app... But it is lacking in usability as far as I am concerned. - scutter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I think it's great that someone has created this tool and made it available for free. The prospects for online collaboration are encouraging.
However, as someone who is a heavy user of Visio, I have to say that IMHO this is by no means a Visio killer (at least as it exists today). It has maybe 2% of Visio's functionality. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Yes, because network diagrams are the only kind of diagrams on earth.
- nokkloom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4good example of what flash is really capable of. (y)
- NICU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm with ThankTheCheese, this app looks great and looks like it would be really helpful for the few times I need Visio. I think most online applications are a waste of time if you'll need them on a daily basis, but for me who uses Visio once or twice a month this would be very handy.
- KCorax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Now if only you could import Visio projects...
- t3rmin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Actually, digg included the close paren. It's done that to me before, and I've seen it happen to other people. Include a link between parens (http://www.google.com) and digg is sure to munge it. ;-)
- kaniz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"inherent advantages over traditional software" -- huh?:what?
IMO - most online apps do not have an inherent advantage over traditional software - YET. The possibility is there, the potential is there. But as most web-based apps stand now, they are not robust, fast or feature-rich enough to replace desktop apps.
I think it will be a few years yet until there is a 100% online web-based office suit that can give desktop based ones a run for their money and prove to be real competition.
I cant wait for that day, but I'm not going to be getting my panties all moist just yet. - fabbers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Very useful for people who don't need the additional power of Visio, it allows me to free up a Visio license for someone who really needs it.
- Anviltongue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Meh...try Ajaxsketch.
http://www.ajaxsketch.com/
You can your diagram to your computer as an SVG and you don't have to register. It's somewhat limited, but if you are looking for a somewhat basic replacement for Visio, this will do the job. - thinksInCode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You make a good point. That's one reason I don't use online tools like Writely. But that doesn't mean that Gliffy is without merit.
And, Dag Yo - He isn't trolling, he was mentioning one example. Stop throwing around the word troll.
Damn, I had this problem too. I was also trying to reply to ddales. - jbenson2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3KCorax - Your link gives a 404. You included the closed parenthesis with the URL. The correct link to Dia is http://www.gnome.org/projects/dia/
- Dag_Yo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Just because you can't see why it's a good thing doesn't mean that it's now universally useless.
Stop trolling. - justice7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Here is the problem with online applications
They require the server site to run !! Therefor you have to rely on the server (which you do not control) to be up all the time.
Hardly a replacement for local applications. - drowe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2....until they're purchased by Google, and all plans are free. They're basically setting themselves up for a Google purchase. Office application, semi-free, web-based, Beta version....SOLD.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Let's see..
Visio may do 99% of what anyone could ever want, but costs $500+.
Gliffy does 95% of what *I* want, is within a mouseclick of any box on the net and is FREE.
Looks like a good place to start a comparison.
Hell, I hav Dia installed on three machines and I almost never use it. No reason to pull out the full kit when all I need to do is make a relatively simple set of diagrams. - kevin_ou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just tried it out. It is easy to register and use but very limited:
http://www.gliffy.com/pubdoc/1015498/M.jpg - t35t0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it does class diagrams which is a type of UML diagram
- FlintZA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree to a point. I feel the same way about Google Spreadsheets (putting your financial data on an online spreadsheet that google has total control of!? No thanks), but just like spreadsheets this could certainly have some great applications that don't put sensitive organizational data at risk.
Doh! Replied to the wrong comment.. aimed at ddales below ;) - CubiX, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Flash based... :(
I was hoping it was another cool ajaxy app. - crashlander, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To bad they don't support UML diagrams.
- tybris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Inkscape has about 100x more functionality and about a 1000x better peformance. Talk about choosing the wrong technology...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Pinch me, I must be dreaming!! This is INCREDIBLE!!! WOOHOO!!
- ceralor, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5First Writely, now Spreadsheets. Google just needs some flash-based presentation app and this and they're practically completed the Office suite!
- aeoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I buried this story because it links to a blog instead of directly to giffy.com.
- Filoviridae, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey whatever works. It's pretty slick even if it isn't laden with buzzword technology.
- Blitzenn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hate Visio and would give nearly anything to get my hands on software that does the same work but is not so difficult to use and manage as Visio is. I don't think Gliffy, or is it really 'Glitchy' even comes close. I suppose the article's title gets you to read it, but come on people, it's a bug ridden beta product with a very small subset of Visio's capabilities (as difficult as they are to find and use grantedly). How can you even start a comparison when they are so far apart?
- anhar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nothing special.
it is not problem to code ANY application in any language (example C#) and compile it to flash. it should be possible to compile to JavaScript.
BTW: what is "visio killer"? running online? - gleapsite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wikipedia I think is an example of one.
The 'possible' benefits of online apps are this:
Acessable from anywhere,
Easier to collaborate - Anviltongue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Seumas
Check out the bottom of the sample screen shots:
'create and share your own diagrams at gliffy.com'
Maybe I should've said 'tag line?' Still, it has the same effect.
GAH! Replied to wrong comment! See below parent! - tybris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What ever happened to the 'Bad link' report option?
- HarleyQuinn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This made me stop and think. Semi-related, all OpenOffice.org needs is a Visio substitute, and so long Microsoft. In the meantime this is great, but when faced with needing to run this while say traveling on an airplane, or waiting around an airport...
- ffachopper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think it's very useful, I can use it to study some subjects that need to be resumed. Thanks!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ads?
Where?
What are you talking about?! - patmfitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It appears to be OpenLazlo-based, which supposedly can produce either a flash front end or an ajax front end. I'm not sure of the ajax side of OpenLazlo is completely working at this time, but in theory someday they could produce a non-flash version.
- Anviltongue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Seumas
See above parent comment...I replied there by accident. Whoops. - gsmithEIDW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i'm sure it will eventually but it'll probably be the commercial version...
- jbenson2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Visio Killer? I don't think so. They have a long way to go before it can be called a killer app. From what I can see, there are no options for grouping, alignment, and no help option.
- culbeda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ Seumas
"Gliffy does 95% of what *I* want"
Keep using it. I'm willing to bet that's not the case once you've spent some time with it. (But it is a great start, no question.) - greganalytic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can this export SQL from an ERD diagram? Does it support ERD? Much thanks digg users!
- smithco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3KCorax - Your link gives a 404. Thus given the choice between trying Gliffy and a 404, I think I'll try Gliffy.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0excellent tools, bookmarkd it.
- ho0ber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I *hope* google snags them. I'd love to have it added to the list of integrateable & collaborative tools I can use from my google account.
If one day google starts charging for its currently free services, I'm one of those people in so deep that I can't imagine not paying to keep them. - Caeric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Despite some of the bad press, I am in complete agreement that this is pretty useful. Sure a little scaled down, but very intuitive and super simple to "load". Good, and dugg!
- fabbers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Oooh they hide that away don't they Booooooo
