Inaccuracies in gizmodo article, FFDShow is not a Microsoft product. - SparQy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19Here's the Vista Codec Pack I recommend. VistaCodecs_v426, includes DiVX and others...

Not my site, blah, blah, - tropican8, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13FFDShow is mostly the work of Milan Cutka, who has no relationship to Microsoft whatsoever.
- Jiffylush, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8FFDShow is already working, this is just an interface to change settings from within vista's media center interface with your remote.
ps. ffdshow is great, divx, xvid, mpeg2 and more, very active development as well. - mike1979, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Not any ffdshow will do - I have Vista Ultimate Home and the standard builds I usually downloaded
(like at http://www.free-codecs.com/download/FFDShow.htm)
would crash whenever it would build thumbnails for the videos in my collection. Perhaps because I have a lot of h.264 content. I found I needed the tryout pack to fully stabilize the codec situation with MCE.
http://ffdshow-tryout.sourceforge.net/ >> Specifically made with Vista in mind apparently. Works like a charm!
Also Cole2k is good for the free DVD decoder action, in case the Microsoft one gives you a headache like it does to me (Microsoft codec also is a big pig on CPU for older machines like mine - Sempron 3100+ w/512MB RAM and an FX5200 lol) Intervideo and/or Cyberlink video codec, and keep the Microsoft Audio codec. Otherwise it will crash :/
Just uncheck everything except for a set of the preferred MPEG 2/DVD decoders listed at the top of the install wizard - page 4 I think?.
http://www.cole2k.net/?display=Codec-Pack-Advanced >> Core AVC/AAC, MPEG 2 decoders, and some other goodies you can try...
http://www.whittakermoore.com/VMCD.exe >>To check/change what MPEG 2 decoder Vista is using - raid517, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I am frickin sick of this. When people submit a story to digg, why not just link directly to the relevant page in question? Why do we always have to click through four or more pages of spam and various people's blogs before we get to the real story?
Actually I know why - and it's because it generates traffic and AdSense revenue - but man I wish I could ***** strangle people who do it. - Jaybo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You need to hit the X button or Info button on the remote to make Transcode 360 work, then pick 'more' from the menu. You would be surprised how few people know this and suddenly are able to play divx after finding this out.
- magic6435, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6what the hell are you talking about. im running vista mediacenter on my tv for the past week with 125 Divx and xvid movies on it with no problem.
- bluenullity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yeah but can I play MKV files in Vista Media Center. Hate it that most fansubbers are switching to MKV and I can't play it in Media Center.
And yeah yeah I could use VLC but its a pain without being able to use my remote to skip around or to be able to select the language or aspect ratio without a remote. - Sferrero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Does it work with an Extender like the 360?
- MrViklund, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2H.264 >>> DivX
- brianb722, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I have absolutely no issues playing Divx or Xvid files in Vista Home Premium in Media Center. Haven't tried any H.264 files yet.
- Nodren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2if you're on 64 bit and saw the link above and tried it to see if it would work, you should visit this page next, using the vista codec pack(32 bit version) and going here, you can get divx/xvid to play in media center on 64bit vista
http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=66826&st=0&p=460040entry460040 - dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I think they meant to say "Window's FFDShow" or "FFDShow for Windows", but it was close enough..
- Ben - kevth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If this is for the PC itself, then all you need is the xvid codec. But if you use an extender then you need something like Transcode 360. Does this work with a media extender like the xbox 360?
- CrimsonBlur, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I use TVersity and it works flawlessly for any codec you have a decoder for. If you have a decent computer and a fast network connection you can stream video content that is about equal to HDTV broadcast quality. The only drawback to the transcoding method is that anything that's actually been record... er, created in 5.1 surround will be downmixed to stereo. Other than that the quality is great and it's very simple to use and you don't need a Media Center PC to use it either. I have XP Pro.
- Kanna, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Using said pack as I type. Works wonders for everything in my video collection.
I'm running Vista x64. - DarkAngelPT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Microsoft's FFDShow decoder"
wow...my balls just hit the floor with this one.
ffdshow is one of my favorite open-source, non-drm-bloated applications. - edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I can play softsubbed MKVs in XP media centre just fine. I think I installed a registry hack a while back. Try googling it, it might work in Vista too. On the other hand, the registries might be entirely different.
Also, VLC is useless for softsubs. No position or styling support, and it displays translation notes that should be hidden (all of which result in a jumble of garbled characters all over your video instead of correctly placed and formatted subtitles). - smarusich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sorry, you're wrong.
- burty89, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Microsofts FFDShow???
- mike1979, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1BTW @ Bluenullity above setup will play .mkv's just fine as well , as it has the Matroska splitter built in...
Also have heard good things about CCCP, but this setup seems to work good at anything so far, so I didn't want to start the whole experimentation thing all over again, you know how it is ;) - smarusich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah, but not many encodes in it.
- krazytom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1anyone have an answer to this? I tried transcode 360 and couldn't get that to work.
- UnnDunn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3But can it stream DivX to media center extenders (specifically Xbox 360?)
- mydave, on 07/28/2008, -0/+0I'm not install Vista yet.

http://www.yara-online.org/ - raid517, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Try TVersity.
- kidcodea, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2pros use ffd :)
- kevth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2There is a beta for Transcode 360 available for Vista to stream xvid to your 360.
- Kerjo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2No, it doesn't :-(. This is actually pretty old news, anyway... it worked back in the betas.
- andyd2k, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Is this a joke? All you need is a compatible codec. Nothing new. Now if we were talking about xvid on the 360 then that's an entirely different story
- jdhoover, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3We tried out K-Lite Full, I believe it is still free...
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm - LordSpam, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Yeah I'm not really a fan of Gizmondo, but I digg simply because I think it's useful overall with or without passing through their site.
- lotion, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Codec packs are bloated and unnecessary. Find a good build of ffdshow and stick with it.
- s-m-a-c-k, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1KLite is the best... be sure to configure the FFSHOW Video Decoder (Click Start... Type Video...) XVID and DIVX Codecs to use XVID decoder... simple...
- markthegoth, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1OT: does anyone know how to get divx running WITH SOUND in front row?
- Lasthorseman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Yes but to play that high density new movie you also have to accept the NSA's daily trolling of you files, thoughts and size color and consistency of your last bowel movement.
Microshaft pioneers the predatory and Orwellian business practices adopted by all of IT! - dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Try the Combined Community Codec Pack. http://www.cccp-project.net/
I have no idea if it works with Vista, works fine with WinXP Media Center, and the pack is aimed as Anime-watchers (Although it's a good codec pack regardless of what you intend to watch)
http://www.cccp-project.net/wiki/index.php?title=FAQ#Windows_Vista_Beta_1_.2832-bit.29
- Ben - jefflundberg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I'm with jdhoover. I definitely recommend K-Lite. It comes with FFDshow, as well as codecs for just about everything you can think of, including Real and Quicktime. Works on Windows XP and Vista with Windows Media Player and Media Center.
- SmartITGuy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Perhaps Digg needs to add a feature besides digg up and digg down...
Everyone can vote/click the "Ban this poster from posting/commenting for X amount of time" 'button'
Where X is a function of how many times that 'ban' button is clicked. - dreadsword, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1http://slantt.net/news/Gizmodo_DivX_in_Vista_Media_Center_You_Can_Now
Slantt is my 0.1 mashup. Its surfaces links related to Digg top stories from Del.icio.us and Technorati by doing a bunch of API and page scraping work. Its just one way to add more context and find out more about things your come across on Digg - basically aggregates, filters (no duplicates), and prioritizes (popularity) tag & blog searches. Enjoy, and feed back is appreicated.
Digg this down as spam if you want to, but note that there are no ads on slantt, and I've put this together on a volunteer basis because I find it to be useful and hope others will to.
[note: I'm posting this in a few (this is the 2nd one today) digg stories to hopefully gather some feedback] - vtequine, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I used Combined Community Codec Pack, works great in Vista.
http://www.cccp-project.net/ - Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I've been able to do this for a while now.
Just make sure that you're running the Vista Codec Pack and the latest version of Nero (if you use it). - SmartITGuy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Since Mocrosoft's new mantra is "All yr media are bel0ng to us"
We only have to wait for the next service pack or an automatic Windows Update and this will no longer be possible. - TomP, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2I'd still rather have a codec pack!
- KiltedMile, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Another reason not to move to Vista just yet...
- writeman, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2Advice: don't get Vista and you won't encounter this problem.

What is Digg?
