- axis, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16I love how people say the UI is ugly and old. You know, some people don't like programs that are all graphical and a waste of resources. This program is so simple its perfect. I want to chat to people with people regardless of the protocol they use. Gaim allows that and you know what, the only way I can tell they are on another protocol is by the icon it uses for each protocol. It supports tabs, all the formatting for each window can be the same, so text is the same for every conversation.
People bitch and complain about the looks of this thing, it is funny. If you like programs with pretty colors, this is not for you and it probably never will be. Use Trillian or those other cute little programs that do things less effectively. Gaim is the best multi-protocol client out there, it will always have this simple interface. It is fast and configurable and expandable with 3rd party plugins. If I can chat, send files and eventually voice chat, I will be so flippin happy. - generalleoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5beta 2 is improved over beta 1 but it;s still 100x worse then 1.5.0. They are changing stuff that did not need changing. And when you change something that was already correct the best you can do is make it worse.
The only thing that ever needed to be changed about 1.5.0 is the away box should hide as a single icon with the main window when it is closed to the notification area (tray) providing a right click menu to manage away states and to see who is IMing you without having to open the window. - Apreche, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If they still haven't added proper Jabber support I'll pass. beta 1 was terrible.
- mastershake1, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9I hate everything because it's popular to be a hater.
Also, NO DIGG. Because I am so self-important that I need to announce what I'm doing. - lunarcloud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2First, if one runs a good gtk theme such as Xfce dusk, then gaim and all other gtk programs look good.
Second for those of you running Windows, you will probably not be compiling from source so ignore this, BUT THERE IS VOICE/VIDEO SUPPORT. those running linux should have done a simple ./configure --help to see the --enable-vv was an option. i dont yet have the dependencies, so i dont know how well it works, but it IS there. - leedo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Spell check requires aspell to be installed... try doing some research.
- generalleoff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Why is Adium based off the Gaim library, yet Gaim looks like its stuck in the 1990's?"
cuz libgaim has nothing to do with the interface. You could make a cmd line im client using libgaim if you wanted. What makes it look like it's stuck in the 1990's is MacOS X has a far superior GUI layout API then GTK+. If some team wanted to create a custom GUI using the windows, mac, or KDE native API's and libgaim it would look great. GTK+ is best left used in GNOME where Gaim actually looks decent. - veracon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3geminitojanus said "I thought they were merging the webcam/voice support (and possibly adding libJingle to the list of ongoing dependencies)?
But yeah, it's still ugly as sin. GNOME could do better."
That'd be your GTK theme that's ugly, since Gaim runs straight off GTK.
fatejudger: I feel bad for KDE'rs like you. - SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Anyone else having problems with these new Gaim Betas? Neither this version or Beta1 will blink / flash in my taskbar when I receive a message. I've looked through the options but can't find a "Blink in Taskbar when a message is received" option.."
You have to enable the wingaim options plugin. The option to make it flash is in there.
Gaim is great, it makes me laugh that people are still using AIM with all its popups and adware. Now all they need to do it update guifications to work with this new beta. - mgreenwald, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2w00t! Horray for GAIM!
I didn't see a member of the Adium crew get picked up by Google. :) - GMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I'm happy with Gaim 1.3.1
- obtix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Changelog?
- lemurballs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3digg, i like it. why is it ugly? its simple and clean.
- zzzmarcus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gaim's UI isn't on par with Adium (which uses libgaim) by any stretch of the imagination, but hey, it's more functional than anything else I've found. Glad to see the project progress.
- blake_ivey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3It isn't that bad. I dont really like the away message window at the bottom of my buddy list, but its not that big of a deal. I like how they changed the preferences menu, and made a separate menu for plugins. I haven't had time to check out if file sharing works any better, but I will eventually get to it.
I also agree with Axis. Gaim does what I need it for...to communicate. Not look all fancy or use all of my cpu resources. Once webcam support and better file-sharing is implemented then I will be extremely happy with Gaim.

http://www.blakeivey.com - freshyill, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Somebody seriously needs to use libgaim to make something half decent for Windows. Trillian is a piece of *****. Gaim is an ugly piece of *****, yet I use it at work. Nothing comes close to Adium.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I REALLY wish they'd add the features they said they would. Webcam, voice, file transfer, etc. Gaim is still great for just chatting, but there are other clients out there that do a better job of "just chatting" (Miranda, for one).
- teitoku, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Did those mofos add keyboard shortcuts yet? Other clients have had 'em for a decade, but ask a member of the GAIM team about it and they cuss you out.
- RWVolkl158, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Definitely waiting for the official version. The Beta 1 left a bad taste in my mouth. While some of the features were cool, a lot of stuff was horribly annoying... Still love my GAIM 1.5 though
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@obtix
Changelog:
*made the away button smaller
/end - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Whatever happened with Aimutation? Such a great project, they promises an update, and then they just disappeared. So sad.
- idiggeverything, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Alot better than beta 1. Thanks for the update. I love gaim.
- mgreenwald, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I for one like the new away message drop down menu attached to the bottom of the buddy list. It got rid of that damned extra window.
- raccettura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The biggest bug I saw was coming out of sleep or hibernate (before WiFi connection re-established) it would crash).
Other than that, beta 1 wasn't to bad. Lets see how this is. - Prod_Deity, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4No webcam support still, no Digg.
- firecrafter695, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ditto on the AdiumX.
- chrisbudden, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Anyone got guifications working?
- gbm85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm really surprised... after Beta 1, I thought Gaim was going to become abandonware...
- radioraheem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whoa... talk about some "beat you over the head" opinions.
Simmer people, and remember that we all have different needs. I'm running a crappy old win98 laptop at the moment so I need a fast client, but one that can still do multiple services. GAIM is perfect for my needs.
If you've got a bunch of RAM and you want to pretend you're Neo or somebody with a tricked out GUI then by all means please find a flashier client. - PvUtrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it better not be as bad as beta 1 or else I'm switching back to trillian
- micklerlop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0who is the current main developer? is it the guy who google hired earlier? that would totally be wasteful. whatever...
can't we just have a simple unified IM client with voice support? dont know why they went crazy changing the buddy list window and *****. - albrad84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anybody know of any good Windows alternatives to Gaim and Trillian? I don't hate either one, but I don't really like them, either.
- atariby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cheers for the heads up, gaim isnt great, but its better than messenger, and free-er than trillian pro, good enough to use until google talk gets its finger out and works with everyone!
- TripinVA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I also cannot get Guifications working. I'm trying to locate Gaim 2.0 Beta 1 because this is so irritating trying to work without it. And the RPM wouldn't install because yum couldn't resolve the dependencies, even with developments enabled.
- chrislewis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you think its ugly, dont forget to use the wimp skin.
- FlyboyP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is like the bum who complains when you give him a sandwich that he wanted a toasted BLT with a toothpick. It's FREE, people! Beggars can't be choosers.
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0whoa huge difference....I love it...next build I think video will be added! great job so far!
- jamelt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I open program and nothing happens, but it's running in processes....end process...open again......program does nothing.....
- RastaMahata, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Gaim 2.0.0 beta 2 does not include voice or video ("vv") support for any protocols. We've done some work toward vv compatibility for Google Talk, but it isn't ready for the general public yet. It is unlikely this will change for the final release of Gaim 2.0.0, but vv will be a primary focus for the next major release of Gaim after that. "
from http://gaim.sourceforge.net - DigeratiPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gaim 2 rocks. Portable Gaim is even better!
http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/chat/portable_gaim
note the portable Gaim betas are in the forums - qwerty967, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just to clear the air...
Gaim 2.0 final will (probably) NOT have support for voice or video. The release after that (probably) will. They have done some work on it, but it isn't ready yet. http://gaim.sourceforge.net/index.php?id=166 - lineman60, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Love the new GUI, but for some reason i am unabel to log in to some of the diffrent networks.
- crickton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone else having problems with these new Gaim Betas? Neither this version or Beta1 will blink / flash in my taskbar when I receive a message. I've looked through the options but can't find a "Blink in Taskbar when a message is received" option..

Your view is not the norm, though I do respect what you say. And if you don't believe me, then ask yourself why Microsoft (the leader in desktop operating systems) creates fancy GUI's for their applications. If users didn't want fancy, they wouldn't give them fancy.
Kopete has a better looking UI (in addition to supporting more protocols than GAIM (read Jabber)), but IMHO, even Kopete is ugly. If you're an X Windows user there really aren't very many choices. And to many users, it's a disappointment when they all suffer from a poor UI design.
For *nix users, Trillian isn't much of an option (I've tried running it with wine and had stability issues). It's unfortunate because if they could port Trillian exactly as it is for Windows, I'd gladly pay for it and run it on my Linux systems. - sremick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love Gaim, I just wish they'd sort out the file transfer issues. File transfer only works on a small percentage of the people I communicate with.
I could care less about voice, video, and I happen to like the look of the UI. But if they could polish file-transfer, I'd be in heaven. - geeke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1anyway to fix that "message too large" message in chat rooms ?
- Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I just recently tried Miranda-IM and found it to be very functional and pretty once you take about a day to work on it.
- a7bat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3No voice and damn it's ugly.
- F1error, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I'll stick with AdiumX
- rokaholic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Hey everybody, keep complaing, I think it's helping!! Seriously, if you don't have anything good to say about gaim then either shut up or start contributing to the gaim project to make it do and/or look like you want. Gaim is the finest multi-protocol IM client around, especially considering it is a framework (i.e. it is lib-based and can be used in other programs as well). Sheesh, all I ever hear you people on digg do is complain. Give it a rest already.
