- dargon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+122I had heard that people like you exist, but I thought it was just a myth
;) - totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -4/+89"You are currently using 2624 MB (94%) of your 2801 MB."
I really need to delete some stuff :( - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+62Check out teleboas' profile. Time to send a little e-mail to abuse@digg.com
- LesterKing, on 10/12/2007, -2/+56I would prefer file transfers greater than 10mb.
- linuxwarz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+50@Teleboas
Good for you, but most digg members are not dumb enough to click spam links you guys put in your comments trying to pass them off as "signatures". - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+34> Does this mean they have a bunch of guys installing new harddrives every second?
Yes. - RSCruiser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30You really should look into GFS and the way Google stores data before you tell them to start using a RAID array...
- tont0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29make it a .rar and you are fine.

- wingnut21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23"I would prefer file transfers that actually let you transfer real files. It won't let you do exe files, even if you zip them. What the hell."
Duh. It's so people like us that know what we're doing can rename and send files, while preventing the myspace crowd from sending a bunch of potentially dangerous exe's. - shadowsurfr1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22Or just rename it name.ex_ and have the person save it as name.exe.
- redlantern64, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22DocWhoWho...you really don't get the whole Web 2.0 thing at all, do you?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22I would prefer file transfers that actually let you transfer real files. It won't let you do exe files, even if you zip them. What the hell.
- srobbin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Google is giving out invitations by SMS:

- mattgs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17send an email to auto225678@hushmail.com with your email address and i'll hook you up
- YesWoo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20Thank God (Google?). Im nearing 2.3GB so its good to know its still increasing!
- SlackerCSB, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16It stopped on Jan 1. Something with the google programmers not having 2007 built into their code.
I marked you as inaccurate. - cruzlee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11@redlantern64
If every Web 2.0 service is eternally beta, we should probably call it Web 0.2b
:p - Thujone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Its a logical limitation... Google adds storage to their array as needed.
- shirosamurai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8It was only 80 people or so. Chill out.
- Negyxo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Yeah, I was beginning to worry too, after 2 and half years of use i only had 1400megs left.,....
- diggmaddy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8It's called Google Talk. http://talk.google.com. Works great. Used it for tons of pics and videos. No problem at all with large file transfers in gtalk.
Anyway, 10MB attachment size limitation is due to SMTP, not the email service provider. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Despite what you believe, your email isn't secure regardless of which service you use.
- WiBu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8They probably already have the additional capacity needed for the constant increase in available storage for a few months if not years. They're probably counting up in small increments because it's cooler than just increasing the available storage by a GB or two every couple of years.
- johnsto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7...and that's how I discovered my machine thought it was still 2006.
- weirdness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"Can I sign up without the invitation code? Or without a mobile phone?:
You need to receive and enter a special invitation code in order to create an account. Currently, we are only sending these codes as text messages to mobile phones. So you will need to have a mobile phone with text message capabilities (most phones have this) and the invitation code itself."
You can get an invite via mobile phone .. but you can't just hit the "sign up button thing". Unless you live in a country where Google allows you to do so. The United States isn't one of them. Grats to you though! - jayasimhan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5http://gmail.afraid.org/
Get gmail invites here. - rrobster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6How long are they going to keep Gmail in beta? I got an account from Kevin and Alex on the Screensavers during one of their mass giveaways that they would periodically run on the show. Seems so long ago now............
- hirak99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Google's increasing space is an asymptotic function (of time) that will tend to but never exceed a preset limit. The 'infinity + 1' is only an illusion... it amazes me to see how well the presentation is working for the public!
- PAJK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I don't really understand the constant count. Does this mean they have a bunch of guys installing new harddrives every second? What's the deal?
- sciencebase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Well. Blogger just left beta and is now shouting about all its new features, so maybe GM will be next?
"currently using 0 MB (0%) of your 2801 MB" - genericface, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@hirak99
Do you know if its a function of time from an article or interview or are you going off the trend so far? If you're going off the trend so far, then it's probably not a sole function of time, but probably a function of sign-ups, costs, etc. which may appear asymptotic so far, but may change (for better or worse) in the future. - icexe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3wow i must suck. its been 2 years now and i still haven't used over 5% of my disk space. i shudder to think the volume of emails people with over 95% usage must be getting.
- synystar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Who in their right mind would open an .exe attachment anyway? Unless I have prior knowledge that you are sending it, and possibly even then, I'm not trusting any executable. If it's for yourself rename the file (as pointed out already) and if it's for someone else upload it to your server (or free file storage service) and link to it.
- dpcamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I thought it was stated in the last digg about gmail's counter stopping that it was just a glitch from the year change and was going to be fixed, so why so many digs?
- mmortal03, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6"What makes you think the Gmail Drive extension would allow you to get around the 10mb limit?"
Because I have tried it.
"And What does it have to do with e-mailing files for that matter? It's just a shell to store files in your G-mail account. Unless you're giving out your password to people, you're the only one who has access to it."
That is why I said "of your own stuff". - dchu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It did stop for a few days when it reached 2800.0000
- EvilFerret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There's so much damn spam.... I get around 400 spam e-mails a day. The spam filter is pretty decent, but I always have to wonder if I'm missing something important.... No way in hell am I going through all of that.
- haggie, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Porn, duh.
- nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you fill this up, you've got problems.
Google made a blunder saying "never delete your email again". There's no reason to archive your 500 copies of "Someone replied to your post" and "Now Available at Amazon" emails. If you never need to look at it again, delete it. I probably delete as much as I archive, and I haven't used 10% yet.
And yes, I get a lot of email (I have somewhere between 10 to 20 email addresses, and they all forward to my gmail). - lordsandwich, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I guess losing some people's entire mailboxes freed up enough space to allow this.
/cheapshot! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Use the Firefox extension Gspace. it splits the file automatically. Its actually pretty nifty.
- mmortal03, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No problem man, I get the same perception from others at times on the 'net. Here is a page describing what the actual limit is: http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2006/06/maximum-size-of-gmail-attachments.html
I am going to try out that roamdrive program and see how it works. - elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The part about not letting you send .exe's makes a lot of sense, and the way that they implemented it is really very useful. It prevents newbies from simply opening .exe attachments, and still allows people who want to send them to simply rename them.
Since nobody stupid enough to open a virus is also simultaneously knowledgable enough to rename an extension, there are no problems. - trib4lmaniac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3According to the source, we will have reached 2835 MB of storage at 4am on the first of April this year.
I hope Google aren't going to do anything I will regret for some April Foolery. - synystar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Since nobody stupid enough to open a virus is also simultaneously knowledgeable enough to rename an extension, there are no problems."
Best observation of the night.
Edit: oops wrong reply .. still applies =). Comment from Elnerdo. - phatsphere, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2the email protocol is limited to 10MB. that's the definition, not their evil restriction. just read in the RFC about it!
- briang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1people need to get off of googles nuts.
first it was the porn blog conspiracy, then moments later it was the gmail capacity.do people not have better things to do than googleing their own blog and staring at their gmail capacity gage!!
both of which were fixed and never seemed to be permanent. - diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it has been slow all day for me too. i think we must be on similar routes to it.
