- MrBabyMan, on 03/27/2008, -7/+54Nice username/avatar there, pal.
- inactive, on 03/27/2008, -7/+29This is really useful for collaborating with clients over the web.
- MikeonTV, on 03/27/2008, -2/+23Wait a second :|
- Dokument, on 03/27/2008, -2/+15What the Duce?!
- Sawta, on 03/27/2008, -0/+13Perhaps it's just me, but I've always believed that it is better to keep work and home files separate from each other, or else you may start to develop a sloppy unprofessional attitude as a result.
Instead of finishing up work when you are at work, you start to constantly come up with reasons why you can put off whatever project you are working on, and finish up when you get home. You can even go so far as to try to procrastinate on your work by constantly syncing your home/work computers. When you do leave work, you either forget about your work or come up with additional excuses why you can put it off, until it's 3am and you realize that you don't even have enough time to figure out where you left off, let alone get any real work done before catching a few hours of sleep and preforming poorly the next day as a result.
On top of all of that, you then also have to watch out for blurring the line further by taking up far too much time on things you should be working on at home while you are at work. Again, this is just my opinion on the matter, maybe other people are a lot more motivated than me to get their work done but for me at least, I know that if the temptation is there, it will probably be too strong to resist. - Namakemono, on 03/27/2008, -3/+15rsync over SSH.
- VeniceCA, on 03/27/2008, -2/+14I really need to sit down and do this. Used to be I'd backup to usb flash drives but now I save there directly, so gotta start synchronizing.
- inactive, on 03/27/2008, -0/+8Oh my God. They are multiplying. O_O
- Wargalas, on 03/27/2008, -0/+7Truecrypt is your friend my friend. I'm doing the usb flash drive bit (got a 16gb coming from newegg), and portableapps.com suite and I don't have a problem anywhere.
- MrBabyMan, on 03/27/2008, -10/+17Thanks for the support. It really means a lot. I apologize in advance for all the digging down your comment will receive because of it.
- ExRe, on 03/27/2008, -0/+6Synctoy works great. The one thing I don't like is it leaves those SyncToyDirectoryId.txt files all over, but it works fine for most jobs.
- Gonz037, on 03/27/2008, -1/+7I'm jealous I didn't think of it first.
- puppycoloda, on 03/27/2008, -0/+6too bad dropbox didn't make the list since its in beta. I will never use anything else.
- Sunscreen, on 03/27/2008, -14/+18Ya know, you really don't deserve all of the ***** people give you. You're one of the main reasons that Digg is as great as it is. Keep up the good work, MrBabyMan!
- smileylich, on 03/27/2008, -0/+4SyncBack Freeware works very well and has lots of options.
- Koppie, on 03/27/2008, -0/+4The article mentions rsync but doesn't mention the god of Linux synchronizing, Unison. Imagine rsync but with a really easy to use and really powerful GUI. http://www.cis.upenn.edu/~bcpierce/unison/
- MattB123, on 03/27/2008, -0/+4Good luck with that. You probably know by now what a boneheaded move it was.
- fxu1989, on 03/27/2008, -1/+4LOL!
- woxidu, on 03/27/2008, -0/+3getdropbox.com
Except it's only free because it's in beta, and might not be thereafter... - waebi, on 03/27/2008, -0/+3OpenSSH ftw.
- MtheoryX, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2Easy there, chicken little.
- cmw72, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2This sounds like exactly what I need. I was doing the flashdrive thing until I recently lost my 2gb kingston somewhere between work and home. I just hope that somebody doesn't steal my identity, considering I had several years worth of tax returns in PDF's on that drive. >.
- NeoPlatonist, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2Then maybe you shouldn't watch so much uncompressed porn... DiVX is your friend!
- Aleman360, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2FolderShare saves a lot of time because you don't have to manually upload anything.
- vrsandersjr, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2It didn't mention anything about security or encryption.
- bradleyland, on 03/27/2008, -1/+3me too!
- crpndeth, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2not sure why you're getting dugg down...that's a valid point. MS Groove does do file syncing as well as full "workspace" syncing. It also worked flawlessly through firewalls and NAT's without port forwarding you have to do with FolderSync. I personally prefer Novell's iFolder, it's free and open source (www.ifolder.com).
- ReK42, on 03/27/2008, -1/+3rsync plzkthx
- prab, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2Everything that you stay is true, but none of the solutions in the article have https tunnels or can run as a system service.
FolderShare's webadmin feature is very nice, but I have found it to be a single point of failure. If FolderShare needs to upgrade their servers, or you cannot connect to them for another reason, your folders don't sync. PowerFolder uses p2p technology to ensure connection at all times, even if PowerFolder.com is down.
The limits are also a hindrance. I wish they were remove or at least the amounts raised, but for now they are there. - MattB123, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Yeah, and scheduling it is pretty easy too. It's my tool for choice for this kind of thing (on Windows).
- WoollyMittens, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1When I still had a PC I used a little batch file to sync two home-folders. It went something like this:
xcopy /H /E /I /D /Y c:/myfolder/ e:/mybackup/
This overwrites only older files and folders, but it doesn't remove deleted files from the backup. - pheedback, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Hmmm why are you getting dugg down? Oh its because of this...
Even though PowerFolder is Opensource, only the paid version has secure file transfers and an unlimited amount of folders. The free version only supports 3 folders, 10 GB of files on each folder, does not include http tunnels, cannot run as a system service, or have a webadmin. (From Wikipedia) - robnoxious, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1I just started using S3 from Amazon. It's not free, but so far I like what I see from it. I can sync many computers to one folder. etc...
- lehdan, on 03/30/2008, -0/+1SyncBack works great except when you want to move or delete files it must be done manually in both locations.
- heavystone, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Free aps? FFS, this option is free buildt into Windows XP/Vista. Why the hell would you bother to mess around with an extra application??
- Sunscreen, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Hehe ;)
- inactive, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1I'm waiting for dropbox... :-/
- radarx, on 03/27/2008, -2/+3I set up Remote Desktop through our corporate firewall so I can work from home just like I'm at the office. No need for synchronization, no need to either buy two software licenses or install a software twice. I set up the other department heads with this and they love it, saves them a few hours a week.
- inactive, on 03/27/2008, -3/+4Free ways? Do people actually pay for the ability to sync directories?
- lyrell, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Or, if you don't want to use sshfs just for an rsync:
rsync -avz -e 'ssh -p sshport' /localfolder user@ipaddress:/remotefolder - Scrappy1850, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1preforming
- InorganicMatter, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Or, you could just use the folder synchronizer built into Windows. But that would be too easy.
- 11Monkey, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Sounds interesting, I currently use tresante filesync (http://www.tresante.com), which works great for me to automatically sync locally on my network or with thumb drives, but the ability to do it over the network would be nice. Thanks for the link!
- Coug, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Foldershare + Picasa works awesome for syncing pictures across computers
- crpndeth, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1It took me forever (well, 2 years) but I finally took the time to get an iFolder server working. I really like it. I tried using FolderSync, but both my work and my home have firewalls and NATs and it never actually synced. Novell's iFolder has great features and is finally fairly easy to install...there's great documentation on the Ubuntu Forums on how to get it up and running. You can set quotas, have multiple users, shared synced folders, etc. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/iFolderEnterpris ...
But the idea is great, having synced local copies is the best. Not having to update different versions on different computers, or having to be connected to a server of some sort to get your documents (plus the advantage of having web access if your not even at one of your computers). It's just great stuff. - zeronome, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1I use foldershare alot. For a m$ product that is currently free i love it. I sync over 6 PCs including my MacBook Pro, it works beautifully.
- burdalane, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Nice information to know, even though I don't need it at the moment. I can ssh or run Remote Desktop from home to access my work computers, and I can access my home computers from work using ssh or VNC.
- pyrates, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1You forgot syncback SE.
- root1657, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1This is true for so many things....
- madmack, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1I use GoodSync to synchronize folders with my webDAV folder. that way i don't need both my desktop and laptop running at the same time to sync them over (as in FolderShare). whenever a computer logs in, it checks my webDAV directory, and syncs.. ! I needed to sync my roboform passcards and identities between my desktop and laptop, and this was great in achieving that.
