- Kamael, on 12/06/2007, -11/+62When it supports the MSN network (directly, not through Jabber), i'm sold.
- jjpertusch, on 12/06/2007, -3/+37forget programs that do exist... here's something that doesn't!
- Phlyers, on 12/06/2007, -0/+28I like Pidgin a lot, it works really well with multiple protocols.
- jfkf, on 12/06/2007, -6/+33I will forget Pidgin if they release a linux version of Google Talk...
- 4DFX, on 12/06/2007, -13/+39I really hate how MSN messenger has spread like a disease just because most people are too stupid (or ignorant) to download anything better.
So... dear Google, please bring down MSN! - NCSUspoon, on 12/06/2007, -3/+24HA! I've been using Gtalk for about a year now instead of AIM. It has no ads, takes up less RAM, the voice chat is much more clear, and now this and multi-person chats. Google is one of the only big corporations out there who actually cares about it's products and it's customers' preferences.
- dolemite5005, on 12/06/2007, -6/+26Meebo (www.meebo.com) already does this and more.
- sint4x, on 12/06/2007, -2/+21You can import Word Doc's to Google Docs cant you? Its more like:
Microsoft letting Google support their product? - akatsuki, on 12/06/2007, -2/+18Seriously tired of having four different IM accounts just to talk to everyone. Isn't it time to just agree on a standard just like e-mail?
- 8bit_Hero, on 12/06/2007, -3/+19Forget Pidgin just because GTalk support AIM? your crazy. i doubt GTalk is going to support sametime (a protocol used in most offices).
- hsoj, on 12/06/2007, -0/+15I agree, I like Pidgin, but I love google talk's simple gui and if I can get my google contacts, MSN and AIM buddies, AND gmail all under google talk, that would make things so much easier.
- hotpepper, on 12/06/2007, -3/+16Google should just buy Meebo and be done with it.
- evanbooth, on 12/06/2007, -4/+15adium, ftw
- JasonCox, on 12/06/2007, -2/+12People still use AIM? Dugg.
- RyanHCO, on 12/06/2007, -0/+10Im not interested, just due to the fact that I'll have to leave an extra window open. Even in tabbed windows it's a pain switching back and forth.
- Gonz037, on 12/06/2007, -4/+13Hopefully because, AIM? Thanks, it's cool and all, but it's like implementing telnet into my gmail so I can log onto 1998 and play a MUD. Thanks, but no thanks!!
- Yez70, on 12/06/2007, -0/+8Group chat was added as well.
- kjcdude, on 12/06/2007, -0/+7Link to the official posts next time - http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2007/12/gmail-3-aim ... - http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2007/12/gmail-chat-a ...
- inactive, on 12/06/2007, -4/+11Google supporting a Microsoft product?
- Memnochxx, on 12/06/2007, -0/+6Are you stupid?
- spyrochaete, on 12/06/2007, -0/+6MSN wouldn't be so bad if not for the ads and tabs. I've used their network for over a decade so I'm kinda stuck. Miranda to the rescue!
http://www.miranda-im.org/ (Windows only) - vypergts, on 12/06/2007, -0/+5It's a feature of gmail not gtalk.
- SixFeetUnder, on 12/06/2007, -0/+5nah Pidgin still rules thanks to the Off-The-Record plugin.
http://www.cypherpunks.ca/otr/ - DucoNihilum, on 12/06/2007, -2/+7I'm sorry but Trillian and GAIM (or pidgin now, I guess) are much better than anything google will do.
It's like Flickr and Goolge Images, it's not their specialty. - lilxvietxboi, on 12/06/2007, -3/+8Because AOL is better then Microsoft.
- MattBD, on 12/06/2007, -0/+4Definitely. IM is such a pain. Thing is, a standard already exists (Jabber), which is open source and is used by Google Talk and Meebo. I'd love to see it adopted more widely.
I think social networks need to make more effort to integrate IM into them. That way, you've got all your friends on there anyway, it's just getting them to use the official IM client. I'd like Orkut to be more popular as that is integrated with Google Talk, which would make it easy.
MySpaceIM is rubbish (no Linux or Mac client) and there's a number of different Facebook apps. - Bridea, on 12/06/2007, -2/+6green thumb for that comment.
- ubuwalker31, on 12/06/2007, -0/+4Except that lots of people can't access Meebo at work anymore...I can access gmail.
- PhilippHD, on 12/06/2007, -1/+5Next step to world domination accomplished!
- ubergeek09, on 12/06/2007, -1/+4It's still not as good as Pidgin, as Pidgin supports a insane amount of IM networks.
- mrgono3, on 12/06/2007, -0/+3admins can block the chat feature though
- SniperGX1, on 12/06/2007, -0/+3Well Trillian and Pidgin don't have ads infecting them, so clearly they are inferior to goog's products
- A11YND, on 12/06/2007, -1/+4if Ron Paul was president GTalk would support AIM.
- rossinio, on 12/06/2007, -0/+3ouch, if they keep it web only thats going to be pretty damn annoying, is there any news of a desktop client upgrade?
- hmunkey, on 12/06/2007, -1/+4They don't read it. Read the privacy policy.
- vafada, on 12/07/2007, -0/+3GMail isn't even close to Pidgin/Kopete/Triliian. Yahoo support? MSN support? ICQ support?
- astrotrain, on 12/06/2007, -0/+3Pidgin is nicely laid out, simple, and it the portable version allows me to take it wherever I find a USB port.
- ndonohue, on 12/07/2007, -0/+3I would also recommend Miranda for windows users who want a lean, multi-network chat program. That said, more choice is always good, but I can't see Google expending the time and energy to make yet another chat program, unless they wanted to have it all server-side, or wanted to make a first-party chat program for Android.
- bryan314, on 12/07/2007, -0/+3google, aim, yahoo, msn should all agree on some common protocols. I don't require an aol account to email aol people, I don't require a gmail account to email people at google, etc... Why do I need multiple accounts to chat with everyone?
- addictist, on 12/06/2007, -1/+4Could not agree with you any more if I tried!
- viserov, on 12/06/2007, -0/+3And I was starting to wonder if Google completely forgot about its IM client.
- pixelate, on 12/06/2007, -0/+3FIAL
- antdude, on 12/06/2007, -0/+3http://72.14.209.104/search?hs=sUq&hl=en&lr=&c2cof ... but missing images.
- fishie, on 12/07/2007, -0/+2I have plenty of options now that i can use, but competition can't hurt.
- AmazingAndrex, on 12/07/2007, -1/+3"Do no evil."
- secleinteer, on 12/06/2007, -0/+2Why would I use a browser-based IM client on a daily basis? The only reason I ever use Meebo (another browser-based IM client) is when I'm not on my computer and don't have my flash drive with me. Web apps just can't provide the same functionality as a desktop application.
- joshua5, on 12/06/2007, -1/+3I thought taking advantage of unaware computer users was Microsoft's plan from day 1.
- marcz, on 12/07/2007, -0/+2Forget Pidgin and Trillian?! Morons! Those two do everything. Only Americans use AIM.
- thebankshow, on 12/07/2007, -0/+2I definitely agree. Standardization would be nice. Until then, I'll pray that InstantBird ( http://instantbird.com/ ) can do for IM clients what Firefox did for browsers....
- thewfirestarter, on 12/07/2007, -0/+2Pidgin supports Google Talk's chat features (no voice and such though)
