- noodhoog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Hmm, I dunno, I mean "Leveraging Landsat satellite imagery and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission data" sounds pretty good, but does it also empower me to leverage a creative new paradigim shift for accentuating the best-of-breed application items in my vertical market share?
Because if it doesn't do that, I'm totally not into it, man. - Skrolnik, on 11/10/2007, -0/+6Both programs have their good points and bad points. Having a choice between the two is the real high point here.
- cryonix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I’ve had world wind for a while, along with Google Earth. Never found a real use for either in my day to day life. For Quality of maps I’d go with World Wind. For usability google earth.
- DeclanButler, on 11/10/2007, -0/+3There will be a major update of NASA's World Wind this summer, which should see increases in performance. I've written a series of pieces on such virtual globes recently in Nature: see
http://declanbutler.info/blog/?p=23
I've also compiled a collection of several hundred select bookmarks on virtual globes, and similar resources, for those interested in exploring the technologies further: see
http://declanbutler.info/blog/?p=24

Yes, if you drill down into the data, you'll see that this is possible, but make sure your core competencies are aligned so you can drive the initiative. We should continue on a go-forward basis. Anyway, we should take this offline. Ping me for more details. This is a very high level view. - inactive, on 11/10/2007, -0/+2there's also a world wind wiki http://www.worldwindcentral.com/wiki/Main_Page
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I remember using Worldwind a while ago, if you switch the texture to USGS geological data or something like that, I could zoom all the way onto my house and see my car parked in the driveway. Also has a nice tour of landmarks and all other sorts of data.
- inactive, on 11/10/2007, -0/+2NASA's worldwind predates google earth by yonks, cmon where we're all you guys?
- danboarder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Another link to Celestia:
http://celestia.sourceforge.net/ - Midnightbrewer, on 11/10/2007, -0/+2Reading further, the reason the developer went with C# and DirectX was because it was one guy, an intern, who had only one year to do it and not much support. Apparently, the combination of these two Microsoft technologies was the fastest and most intuitive for him. He said he'd like to expand out to other platforms, but that was over a year-and-a-half ago, so I'm not holding my breath.
I think it'd be better to say that NASA's WorldWind was a good try, but fell by the wayside due to lack of development. Pity. Again, one of the shortcomings of open source: it's all good and fine to say that anybody can work on it, except that there aren't actually that many volunteers. Apparently, programmers like to eat, too. - aaronlidman, on 11/10/2007, -0/+2world wind has been out long before google earth.
- Beansprout, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Google don't have USGS coverage for the *ENTIRE US* - World Wind has 1 meter aerial imagery for the whole US and 0.25 meter colour imagery for ~50 major cities.
If you live in the US, World Wind's available coverage is far superior!
I don't understand why this hit digg because there's no news here....the next major release of World Wind is several months away.
And if you just want to see your house and live outside the US or New Zealand or any of the places covered by One Earth then frankly stick to Google Earth because satellite imagery is expensive, and the UK/ESA are arseholes who want people to pay to access the data which their taxes paid to be created.
If you want free stuff from people like us trying to do a monumental task then please support us!
Talking of adding extra imagery into World Wind recently - we, the community, are doing a good job - we have a small processing cluster now and we're adding processed imagery into into our own add-on: http://www.worldwindcentral.com/wiki/Add-on:ZoomIt%21 (the images are kinda fuxored while we tidy up a server move, sorry). Donations help us to build this cluster and expand our online capacity :)
And about the Linux/Mac versions...a Java version is under way (soonish). What people need to understand is that this project is funded by NASA and community donations, and NASA barely even got the funding to continue running the friggin server power let alone paying their staff, let alone expanding that group to add in some cross-platform development!
We all want to do a proper cross-platform version but we don't have the deep pockets of Google. We also want all the ease of use and interoperability with GIS standards, and so on. These are coming slowly as community devs pick them up or as companies use World Wind and then let their code be used in the main World Wind program.
If you want to help out either drop by the forums, donate to paypal@worldwindcentral.com, start hacking away (the project is up on sf.net), or bring in some more dev-types to help out with bugfixing.
Don't just sit there and whine. - iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2>yeah...windows only...have to stick with google earth.
My number one reason for "switching...BACK" - theMangledOne, on 11/10/2007, -0/+2"For those complaining about low-resolution, use the "USGS Urban Area Ortho" images instead of the default "NLT Landsat 7"."
I think that only works in the US, thank you. I'd prefer high-res on maps not on US soil, but that'd mean satellite spying on other countries, eh?
On related note, used both Google Maps and World Wind, decided to ditch 'em both, since I've been filling my HDD with *video files*. But I'd dugg this. Tried World Wind, and it's a nice software. - modian, on 11/10/2007, -0/+2For those complaining about low-resolution, use the "USGS Urban Area Ortho" images instead of the default "NLT Landsat 7".
- TransmitThis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Used worldwind when it first came out and was well impressed with it.
Didn`t have a dast connection then and it did take up a quite a bit of HD Space esp if you downloaded some of the extra files, but still it is very good, will have to try it again.
As always Google took this idea and made it more usefull, but at the detriment of the image quality...
I would say you should try it out - donolsen1155, on 11/10/2007, -0/+1They are both free and both have their advantages. Don't forget about either. :)
- chriskeyes, on 11/10/2007, -0/+1Guys, most (normal) people out there actually use Windows. So it only makes sense that NASA would make something that would work for most people. Didn't you know that Mac and Linux are still the minority, and thus are unappealing to most companies to develop for? Sorry. But it's true.
I for one, love WorldWind. The UI is much better and easier to use. I find GEarth on the other hand to be a slow down.
Now if only NASA would partner with Live Maps/Virtual Earth (best aerial map imagery ever!) and make the whole thing complete... - inactive, on 11/10/2007, -1/+2I dugg this story a few days ago that gave the history of and compared Google Maps/Earth to World Wind and some of the other players in this market.
http://digg.com/technology/Google_Maps_vs_the_Rest - inactive, on 11/10/2007, -2/+3hopefully it being open source means that it won't be long until there's a linux and mac osx port..
- wideawakewesley, on 11/10/2007, -0/+1I hear that Microsoft's Windows Live Local is actually better than Google Maps for the USA when it comes to satellite imagery. Unfortunately it doesn't have decent global coverage yet so I can't really judge.
I definitely preferred Google Earth to World Wind last time I tested it though. - Joker182, on 11/10/2007, -1/+2Last time I tried World Wind, you could not input a specific name for a city or town, you had to go by landmarks. Unless they changed this, I'll stay with Google Earth, Thanks.
- danboarder, on 11/10/2007, -1/+2jull1234: "But Google Earth doesn't do the moon now does it... "
Well, if you want to go to the moon, mars, other planets and stars, check out Celestia - it's Open Source too, and it can generate a nice res Mpeg from your trip.
http://www.shatters.net/celestia/
Also, you can turn on or off the clouds on Earth in Celestia. (it's for browsing the galaxy, not zooming in to your city.) - jaypee68, on 11/10/2007, -1/+2Just tried World Wind and I find 2 negative things that make me want to stick with Goolge Earth.
1. Extremely outdated photos
2. Not as high res as Google Earth. - duwamish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, shrewd is right NASA World Winds been around for a while, OK you don't get the same ultra resolution you get on google maps with out some of the excellent plugins - which range from a 3D model of the ISS which follows its actual path round the earth, realtime clouds, and pictures of the latest hurricanes etc. you can even get the moon and mars with the same 3D view (although obviously not half as higher resolution!)
I think in the Google Earth vs NASA Worldwind debate I think we're forgetting they both have different purposes, Googles is a search and data representation tool, and NASA Worldwind is a 'Scientific Visualisation Studio'. - ballhog347, on 11/10/2007, -0/+1ive had this for a while and enjoy it very much
dugg! - jull1234, on 11/10/2007, -0/+1But Google Earth doesn't do the moon now does it... I can't tell you how many times I've wanted, no, needed to zoom in on Apollo 16's landing site or gaze deeply into the eyes of "the man"
- Beansprout, on 11/10/2007, -0/+1You can get real-time weather with the NRL weather button on the toolbar....though I think they broke something recently, so it might not work right now...
- greenflash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0NASA is developing a Java version of World Wind that will run on Mac and Linux. Should be available in late summer.
- Agret, on 11/10/2007, -1/+1"... and it's open source!"
... AND IT'S OLD AS HELL!!
This is at least 2 years old now, reported as old news. - elpottsy, on 11/10/2007, -1/+1How can Google earth be outdated when worldwind was around way before it? Seriously, this ***** old, no digg.
- Mythrl, on 11/10/2007, -1/+1And no 3D viewing on google earth. It's pretty cool looking at some mountains with the 3D view
- NicePaul, on 11/10/2007, -1/+1Google Earth does 3D terrain, and has a 3D buildings overlay of areas of high population. This doesn't seem to offer any more (but I'm on a Mac so haven't checked it out)
- squirrel83, on 11/10/2007, -1/+1DUDe google earth is still far better. . .in my book it only goes off history data and not to mention its quite useless for the normal person . . There are many other reasons which you can read above. . .
World wind is like four years in the making . . and is a powerfull tool dont get me wrong . .but compared to google earth there are many limitations. . USGS does provide some better images of Mountains and some other not so dense areas. . - RobbieCrash, on 11/10/2007, -1/+0Additionally, google earth does do 3d... All geographic topography is raised, it's only man skyscrapers and the like that are not.
- starmanjones, on 11/10/2007, -1/+0i'll probably go down on a PC to see if its worth the hassle. but how did a government agency... using my tax dollars allow themselves to get that locked into Microsoft. I don't know that they are going to be able to do anything but Windows without a compete rewrite. from the looks of it. i thought about asking about a mac version but the faqs and help was devoid of any mention of macintosh... that usually means that no and we're too sunk into microsoft to do anything about it.
- Beansprout, on 11/10/2007, -1/+0>Yea old. Anything the government does just sucks.
The open source community (that's folk like you and me) have contributed tens of thousands of lines of code to the program and its datasets, and the community is the support team.
It's government software in that that was its beginning, but it's **open source** and that's what makes it different. - RobbieCrash, on 11/10/2007, -1/+0ugh, *man-made skyscrapers.
- Beansprout, on 11/10/2007, -1/+0It can and it is, it's running on a dual Xeon with 8Gb RAM iirc.
The NASA guys ran to a nearby hardware shop for parts when worldwind.arc.nasa.gov got slashdotted back in 2004 :D
>Isn't this what they used to make Google Earth. I thought Google just got the source and improved it
No, that was Keyhole which Google bought and improved and made free :) - qwerty967, on 11/10/2007, -1/+0Yeah I never really found a use for them either except as fun toys to play with.
Slightly OT, has anyone seen Ask.com's maps? They took the best qualities of Google Local, Yahoo Maps Beta, and Windows Live Local to create a useful mapping service, though it felt a tad slow. - emka, on 11/10/2007, -1/+0> Last thing I would do is install some government software, who knows what they got in it.
lol
it's open source - you can check the code and see what's in it ;) - nextyoyoma, on 11/10/2007, -1/+0not worth the install size...over 2 gigs...plus, it's a bandwidth hog, as it constantly downloads images or what you are looking at. It has its good features, but I got rid of it months ago for its huge file size, processor demand, and general uselessness as anything buy a toy.
- Mongoose, on 11/10/2007, -1/+0Wow, you'd think that a government website could hold up to the digg effect....
- lynnseck, on 11/10/2007, -1/+0Cant kill my Google Earth at all. Yes it is nice on Over views, but not as much specific as GEarth. And honestly, I m not interesting in previous years weather situation, so , no idea to download their weather packs, its waste of time. Cheer for World Wind Moon. But I m still prefer Google!! #1
- dbr_onix, on 11/10/2007, -1/+0What? I used NASA World Wind ages ago, then stopped using it as soon as I found Google Earth..
If nothing else, the Word Wind interface is horrible, it's a lot harder to get a decent image, and I'm assuming it's older images....
NASA World Wind pwned a few years ago though....
- Ben - tsupersonic, on 11/10/2007, -1/+0I have to go with Google Earth, but I uninstalled it as it had no place in my pc. I don't like "Junk Software" that I don't use, especially if it's from Google, they make some crappy apps.
- Beansprout, on 11/10/2007, -1/+0>Anyone know of one with good UK sat images?
Us World Wind community memebrs are working with a company to get high resolution imagery of the whole UK. E-mail us at wwc@freeearthfoundation.com if you'd like to see it...nothing helps companies make decisions like people power :) - crispytown, on 11/10/2007, -1/+0Thanks NASA for bringing us something to take on the Google Powers to be.
I wish more sites bring up things to take on different parts of Google. They need a kick in the pants. They need to learn what made Google and stay with that. - weiran, on 11/10/2007, -1/+0Anyone know of one with good UK sat images?
- drawdef, on 11/10/2007, -1/+0old as dirt. doesnt anyone check their stories for duplication ??? - an easy search for 'world wind' nets more than a dozen returns on the subject. no digg.
