- dono169, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8They have put a lot of work into making the public domain material searchable and usable in a unique way, they deserve to profit off the innovation.
You can still get that material from the National Archives, it is not as if Footnote has a monopoly over the public domain material. - nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7better note to you.... before commenting... don't. and continue not commenting for a while after that...
- Birdoftruth, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Plz Bury this, it costs just to view public domain material

- fuzzmeister, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I could definitely see Google buying this site or partnering with them, it would be a huge step forward in their goal of indexing all of humanity's knowledge.

Not an unreasonable price for such a great opportunity--if you are a student or regularly perform that type of research. Hopefully it will be purchased by Google, make its way to the Wiki, or otherwise become open source. - electronaught, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I did not read into this but I didn't know it cost money before submitting.
excerpt if you actually read the story..
"But if you’re like me and just want to take a look around, you can register for a basic membership (free) and view select documents from the National Archives as well as contribute to the site by uploading images, annotating documents and creating member pages."

- vuedoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Bad business model. Should have used viral marketing or made it free until most of us got used to it. I am a graduate student in a historically related area and I won't pay ten bucks a month --to use it.
- oriolesfan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Description should read:
Footnote is an impressive resource which launched last week that allows users to access millions of historical documents online for the first time. Interested in the Civil War or perhaps the Bureau of Investigation? Just look it up on Footnote & w/in secs (of authorizing a hefty credit card transaction) view digitized copies of the orig. docs including photos, signed docs, letters, case studies.. - rqwhitaker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2thank you! Is it too difficult to give me the ***** direct link instead of sending me to your ***** blog?!?!?!
- Chrisfromdevon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0has anyone else noticed that this is the 3rd story in a row submitted to digg with the word MILLION in its headline. I wonder what digg labs will make of that.
