- ohwhen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1awesome
- VladDrac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Seems sort of redundant. All you have to do is type the IP address into ANY modern browswer with Java and you'll connect to the running VNC server. I guess if you love flash, why not? But why in the first place is a better question.
- SeanAhern, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The point is portability. Rather than requiring a VNC viewer on any machine you wish to work from (public library machines?), you just need a web browser with Flash installed - which is a lot more machines than those with a VNC viewer. Much more flexible, much more portable, etc.
- 12340987, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0eh? what's the point?
- jkearney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0interesting
- mr.tech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0looks prity cool
- JesterXL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0gfors, yeah I agree with you about the ads. Google got where they are by ads, too.

Point being.. instead of requiring Java you can use flash, which is more likely to be on everyone's computer - 12340987, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0IC. works for me, I'll have to try it.
- SuperTrozTX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There's plenty of tools out there that think that every Flash animation is advertising and blocks it, while Java is present on most PCs (in spite of Microsoft's efforts). I use TighVNC a lot - and always the Java version. I think a Flash version is unnecessary.
- r©ain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool, too bad it's not yet practical for use due to the AS3.0 (which is alpha) and 8.5 player
But very cool work and ++digg - jeg1972, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What machine can you VNC to from a library? If you can do that, I'd seriously worry about your security.
- jeg1972, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good proof of concept, but as 12340987 says, what's the point? If you want to run VNC in a browser, use the Java version.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0damn i always loved VNC! this is prettycol becusae i can't get into my vnc server from school
- xcheats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't see a point when you have to run it from your local machine "Due to Flash Security," which mean you can't host it on your webserver, etc. You need the .SWF on the machine in a local folder. By the time you download the .swf, you might as well install a normal viewer.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wait nvm
- 6dust, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Java sucks. This is a much better solution than having to worry about what JVM is installed. Great app!
- Absalon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0according to wired magazine flash is installed in 98% of internet accessible computers so i see a reason for using it in flash
- version30.x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks promising -- I use VNC a *ton*.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ironcamel: No Flash 8.5 available for Linux yet, that's your problem.
- ironcamel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Crap, it's not working for me. I dropped the swf file into my browser, and I just get a grey page. I'm running firefox on linux. Any ideas?
- Gaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You have to download it and drop into your brower.
Isn't it easier to download the Windows binary viewer directly (it even works great with wine)? That way, you get all features of your VNC server (UltraVNC is the best around ;)). - JesterXL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0gfors, you are incorrect and misinformed.
Yahoo! Maps for example is not a cartoon; it is a rich internet application, not using AJAX, that allows other developers to build upon it much like Google maps.
Flash Lite is extremely popular in Japan, and other parts in Asia, used to sell phones for it's installation alone, as well as portals, games, and other dynamic content that is quicker to develop in than Java, and looks better too.
Flash has been used in console games like Rogue Squadron for the Playstation 2. It is also the interface for the PC game, Battlefield 2.
Flash is used as the interface for the navigation console in the new Jaguar XK.
Flash is cross platform, and cross browser.
Flash is heavily used in the eLearning industry to help in education.
Flash games have overtaken Java's ownership on the web.
Flash kiosks have overtaken Director's ownership in that area.
Flash is on set-top boxes.
Breeze, an online meeting application, blows WebEx out of the water.
Dofus is a MMORPG built in Flash.
Flash and Flex allow the creation of applications... not just ads.
XMLHttpRequest cannot make binary connections, nor handle the multitudes of encryption VNC uses, nor transfer image data as efficiently as the Flash Player can, nor render it to the browser.
Labeling yourself as a noob does not forgive your ignorant and useless statements. - plasticated, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I already dugg this a week ago, and it only got a handful of diggs. What did I do wrong?
- gfors, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sounds like someone was recently at a Macromedia conference... But seriously - useless statements? you have to admit if not for weirdo marketing jocks flash wouldn't be where it is today, and that is the point that, albeit sarcastically, I was trying to make.
Flash 8.x we will see...absolute power corrupts absolutely. - dFaktor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0java sucks. and although i'm sure flashvnc will need to somewhat mature and evolve, i think it has some great potential.
+digg - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0VNC is godly!!
Jeff - http://giveme10cents.com - gfors, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Im new here, so like feel free to noob me like crazy about that, but really, Flash is for cartoons and, is otherwise it's just marketing budgets crapping all over the internet. That flash periodic table is a literally a waste of time, that application would be far better served by asynchronous data retrieval using XMLHttpRequest...just like java would be better for VNC (i don't have flash 8.5...do you). And with all the new power of the new flash players flash devs and there marketing overlords are just gonna go freakin berserker, which, I hope will lead Flash to the same dunce cap corner as pop up windows....jesus christ, if you wanna give britney spears the ol' dirty sanchez you have my support, but that is where it stops. Why don't you all admit you're not creative enough to be designers and not dexterous enough to be web developers and learn xslt or something. Nothing personal, I've needed to get that off my chest for a long time.
