- claydawg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I have made a batch for both 2000 and XP/2003 that will insert the registry values mentioned in the story.
--For Windows 2000, go to http://claydawg.helpdesk.olemiss.edu/reg-fix-2k.zip
--For Windows XP/Server 2003, go to http://claydawg.helpdesk.olemiss.edu/reg-fix-xp.zip
I hope this will make it easier for you guys to fix! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8That's why you don't roll out patches until you test them yourself. Nobody trusts Microsoft to do QA on their patches, anymore.
- Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5A window-breaking patch?
Is this worse than aberrant baseballs? - t1clausen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5We have been dealing w/ this for the last week. This last release sucks! It is terrible that they haven't come out with a patch or auto reg edit to take care of this.
- dialerdave, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9If you think digg is corrupt or you just don't like the way it is managed, why are you still here?
- Basketb926, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5if people with stuff that has made it to the front page digg it, it's worth more. don't forget, it's an algorithm with many variables, so, there could be any host of issues. Also, don't forget about people reporting it for different things.
- claydawg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I'm working on making a batch file to do all of the registry keys at once...I'll keep everyone posted.
- eajohnso, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Thanks for the fix, we had several computers here that could not visit websites unless you typed http:// before the address. For some reason it also affected Office as well....when users were trying to save documents to subfolders of My Documents, Office would crash.
- jasbur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I own a computer consultancy business, and have been running into this since the patch was released. Thanks for the fix. If you need a quick and dirty fix though you can (at least in my experience) safely remove the patch in Add/Remove Programs. Just make sure "Show updates" is selected.
- mintshows, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I agree, our University has been hit HARD with this problem. It seems Microsoft really dropped the ball on QA for this patch.
- INHUMANITY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Let me ask the obvious. How can I tell if I've been afflicted by installing this patch? I have it installed on all my machines, but haven't noticed any problems.
Is there anything I can do to trip the machines to see if I'm affected? I have the reg-zips that claydawg posted (thanks dude!).
I tried replicating all the problems posted on the site, but everything seems OK. - algorythm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Our company got hit hard with this one too, since we are using automatic wsus updates. Thanks for the scripts!
- DJgreenLava, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Thanks this helped quite a bit. Ever since I downloaded Security Patch 908531 for Windows XP I haven't been able to rename my Recycle Bin. This may just be a coincidence though. I realize this isn't a support forum, but can any digg readers offer any help?
- dharcha1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2every affected desktop will require a technician visit for resolution.
great solution. - dharcha1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2But seriously... a real excerpt from an email to all employees of the Miami Dade County Public School System...
Effective Solution [to the problem with the microsoft update]
ITS has been working on developing a solution to the Microsoft update preferably one that could be automatically distributed district wide. Unfortunately, all attempts at a district wide solution have failed. Due to the nature of the problem, at this time it appears that every affected desktop will require a technician visit for resolution. For more information on the Microsoft situation, staff can review the information provided at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165 - crbrown2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Great article, something everyone needs to know about.
- claydawg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3That does work, but the problem is Automatic Updates will download and install it again :-(
- jpbleuu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2great digg indeed. i have run into a few of these at work already. was glad when i came across the info a few days ago.
- adolfojp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All of my Visual Studio versions stopped working recently. This includes the 2003 and the 2005 express edition. An "unknown error" windows pop up when loading the program.
Does anyone know if this is caused by this update? If it is; does anyone know of a fix?
I really want to avoid nuking the hard drive and starting from backups. - vertigoblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1my computers havent had any issues.. except for the yahoo toolbar i had to upgrade...
- NickelSax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/918165/en-us? for info about the symptoms and ways to work around them. Also see http://blogs.technet.com/msrc/default.aspx for additional information.
- lexbaby, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8Heck, 200mb is half of what Firefox uses. :-P
- dgbrimm, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Thank God Clay was here to save microsoft
- ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1we just made a little patch ourselves.
been using it on many PC's. - thekurst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1its so funny to see this article up on digg, I'm a tech and one of my co-workers encountered and fixed this exact problem, today.... (HP's Share to Web + Microsft Security Patch was the culprit)
- jas8522, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Calling it 908531 is pretty boring. I think we should start giving these 'patches' names to help remember them! Any suggestions?
- mintshows, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Very good point, however it is MUCH easier said than done. In a small - middle size organization, it is definitely possible to test these updates, then push them to the users when we deem them 'stable'. However on a University scale, when there are thousands of machines, it is MUCH easier to just configure them to pull updates automatically.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In any environment where you are handling hundreds or thousands of Windows systems, yes you should set them to do automatic updates, but you should do it through Windows Software Update Services so someone always approves patches to all these systems after they are tested. Yes, you can have the best of both cases. Thank you Microsoft for making us go though these hoops.
- claydawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If it won't boot into Windows...it isn't this problem. Have you tried booting into safe-mode of ERD Commander and killing everything trying to run on startup, deleting all temp files/history/and prefetch? That may help in your case.
- cmw72, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been dealing with this in one way or another since the first patch went live. Luckily I was able to quickly deduce what was happening and just rename verclsid.exe to something else. Then I discovered Microsoft's workarounds.
I feel bad for all the non-tech-savvy people out there who will get hit with this and have absolutely no idea what is going on or how to deal with it.
HP products are simple and easy to use. It's sad that those people who purchase these products for these reasons will be the least equipped to deal with this situation.
Have fun explaining to your mother the finer points of regedit when her printer stops working.
Microsoft broke your computer with Windows Update and they can sure as hell fix it in the same manner. - mintshows, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Because, if you have Automatic Updates enabled, it will just re-download it.
- kwilkinson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks for the heads up. I have 3 computers (between work and home) and this fix screwed up two of the three. I will give these a go. Thanks..
- edbro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You can instruct automatic updates to ignore a hotfix. Let it download then choose to not install it. I seem to remeber there is a checkbox to not be notified again about that update. That's what I did.
- IronChef, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Read my Lips..............NO NEW PATCHS! George W. Bush must be working for Microsoft now. Thank god for Firefox.
- claydawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what he said
- kevincupp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I had a guy come in our IT office and said his HP laptop keeps crashing and rebooting after he installed the recent updates. We assumed it was this problem, but it won't even boot into Windows for us to do anything about it.
- kevincupp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No we don't have ERD Commander, but it looks like a nice piece of software, we might pick it up. Thanks!
- claydawg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That's just the HP Share-to-Web software fix. I've got the fixes for nVidia, Adaptec/Roxio, and SonicWorks. Do you see that on the link? No.
- NickelSax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1MSFT is planing on releasing a new version on tuesday:
http://blogs.technet.com/msrc/archive/2006/04/21/425838.aspx - mintshows, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you haven't noticed anything after performing the update, your machine hasn't been affected. This mainly affects machines having certain software packages (certain HP drivers, certain nvidia drivers, sonic burning software, and others).
The major symptoms, are difficutly opening subfolders in My Documents (especially from the "Save As" windows). Also IE will sometimes be unable to access webpages (it is unable to append http:// to web addresses) - edbro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why not just uninstall the hotfix? I believe the only thing it really does is add an extra step when using activeX to comply with a lawsuit. I uninstalled this as it only makes surfing with activex more difficult.
- dharcha1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1up with anything but microsoft.
"It just goes to show that you don't have to have the best product to be the most popular." Robert X. Cringely on Windows, "Triumph of the Nerds" - yakk0dotorg, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Wow, good article.
Ole Miss still sucks though. Go Tigers! - cr3ative, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Dear Sir,
You may have downloaded a Windows Update. For more information, please visit the Knowledge Base article regarding patch ID "Attempt to fix stuff that actually breaks more stuff rofl omg wtf HP scanjet? gaylord".

Microsoft - revokin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165
I don't see why you were on the phone with MS for 2 hours.
That has been up since the 15th. - ryanmetcalf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Before this fix came out, I had office lock as well, the problem was it would open an instance of verclsid.exe, as long as you killed that process, it recovered cleanly and allowed you to save the file. I wrote a bat just to kill the process: taskkill /f /im verclsid.exe
- t1clausen, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5This is truly something that will hopefully benefit the Digg community. This is such a breath of fresh air compared to all of the self promoting, lame, or spam stuff I have been seeing lately.
- dharcha1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1this just shows you that apple sucks. windows is the superior operating system by far. and the people running microsoft are totally competent.
...And George Bush can say 'nuclear'.
(lmao - gets me every time.) - Chakz, on 10/12/2007, -11/+10Ya but Windows works.
- crbrown2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0word Claydawg is a 1337 Hax0r
