- tropican8, on 04/18/2008, -2/+131These are definitely the five most used DVD Ripping tools, but they are all targeted at slightly different tasks.
DVD Shrink is made to be a simple and comparatively fast tool to convert a Dual Layer DVD to a Single Layer DVD. You can disable the compressed domain transcoding if you don't need it, but it's the app's highlight.
Handbrake is made more for converting DVDs to completely different formats, say to Xvid or H.264 for filesharing or iPod use.
DVDFab HD Decrypter is shareware, so it can seem cheap uiwise at times. Unlike most of the other tools on this list though, it can break the really nasty forms of copy protection on newer DVDs.
MacTheRipper is exactly what it sounds, a Mac ripper for when you don't want to convert things to a different format, like with Handbrake.
DVDDecrypter is generally the go-to app for normal ripping and burning procedures on Windows. You can rip DVDs to files, to files generated by parsing IFO information, or to ISO. The ISO is the most useful since you can mount it and have a unencrypted DVD any other app can use. - zanderw00t, on 04/18/2008, -15/+10909-f9-11-02-9d-74-e3-5b-d8-41-56-c5-63-56-88-c0
- Mizu, on 04/18/2008, -3/+35Ugh, again with the "after the jump" and "hit the jump" stuff.
- inactive, on 04/18/2008, -4/+30No k9copy?
- MistaMatt90, on 04/18/2008, -7/+28No k9copy? The only program that will rip, shrink, and maintain perfect menus?
- Sokkratez, on 04/18/2008, -1/+19I'm pretty sure I do those things with DVDShrink.
- jdaniel284, on 04/18/2008, -1/+12Just buy anyDVD. Posting a torrent link to anyDVD just makes you appear a stooge.
I am not necessarily against pirating software, but you SHOULD buy anyDVD and support their efforts. Each purchase comes with LIFETIME updates. Sure, you could download a particular version off a torrent site, but in order to update it you will need to find another crack etc. My TIME is worth much more than the few bucks anyDVD costs. - MrOdwin, on 04/18/2008, -0/+9AutoGK is still up there, but maybe you should have a look at AutoMKV, which also outputs mp4s, mkvs, etc.
- rodgek, on 04/18/2008, -1/+10AnyDVD is one of the best performing and best supported programs in the world (Antigua (West Indies), Caribbean). If you plan to rip more than one or two DVDs get this program.
http://www.slysoft.com/ - wunch, on 04/18/2008, -3/+12I'll tell you after the jump ...
- Awspire, on 04/18/2008, -1/+10I've always used DVD Decrypter to rip my DVD collection, then I usually encode them to xvid or divx and shrink them down to 1GB if they don't have any other interesting content.
AutoGK was the best DivX/Xvid converter for DVD's I've known. Do they still rank the best or has another come onto the scene?
http://www.autogk.me.uk/ - vertigoblue, on 04/18/2008, -1/+10DVDFab Platinum is the best ive used... it does everything
- BrianSaysHi, on 04/18/2008, -4/+11Dear God don't start that again...
- SaintStryfe, on 04/18/2008, -1/+8ah-ha... you miss the most important part of MacTheRipper. It's companion program - a recent version of Toast.
Toast for the Mac - since version 6 or so - has built in burning options which will take the file package from Mac the Ripper, burn it to any disc, automatically converting quality if needed. The DVDs are nearly impossible to tell apart. If you rip a Dual Layer disc, and burn onto a single layer? No problem. It's fast too - less then an hour from ripped file to completed, verified disc for me, with a two year old machine.
Sure, toast costs money, but ya know what? For the ease and speed, it's worth it. I've never found anything even close on any other platform. - worxman02, on 04/18/2008, -0/+7Ripit4me is probably the best that I have used. I haven't found a DVD that it cant rip using a combo of DVD shrink and DVD Decrypter. Too bad both of those programs aren't being developed anymore.
- 007brendan, on 04/18/2008, -1/+7wow, 5 programs! Sounds like a great pipeline. NOT
- MrOdwin, on 04/18/2008, -0/+6ImgBurn, from the author of DVD Decrypter.
- NightwishFTW, on 04/18/2008, -0/+61. Ripit4Me(DVD Decryptor)/Anydvd
2. DVD Remake Pro
3. DVD Rebuilder with CCE
4. Imgburn
Nothing can beat a combination of these apps for DVD-R's. - ArthurArchnix, on 04/18/2008, -0/+6When my brother comes across a DVD he can't rip using any of those tools (it's rare, but it happens), I break out my copy of K9 copy and copy that hard-to-copy crappy dvd.
And yeah, it's just for linux. But we've got live cd's and bootable flash disks, so there no reason not to have it. - thelastknowngod, on 04/18/2008, -2/+7"How many people have Linux versus Windows or OS X?"
we just dont advertise. :)
i second k9copy. its a hell of a lot better than any of the ones on this list. - drjekelmrhyde, on 04/18/2008, -0/+5I mostly use dvdfab and dvd shrink, but will give hand brake a try
- daizaru, on 04/18/2008, -0/+5Not the "only"one, anyways this list is more for the "low end user" who can't research this kind of thing on their own. Which usually rules out linux users.
- inactive, on 04/18/2008, -2/+7Why should shareware have a cheap UI?
- Gabberwok, on 04/18/2008, -1/+6For the record - MacTheRipper is a bit of a ripoff. They have it listed as free here, but it is certainly not. To get the current version (which is necessary for a lot of recent films) you need to send them a mandatory "donation". There are places you can still find the current version for free on the internet, but still, the mandatory donation scheme pissed me off.
- theaceoffire, on 04/18/2008, -2/+7O.o why go with shareware? There is lots of free programs that do a great job.
- inactive, on 04/18/2008, -1/+6I use AnyDVD/CloneDVD to burn... and I use ConvertXtoDVD to convert various file formats to dvd. Works perfectly for me.
- amoeba, on 04/18/2008, -0/+5don't knock DVD Decrypter, it's the original in it's field and still does the job well.
- GuyHitByTruck, on 04/18/2008, -1/+6I've found that (for me at least), AnyDVD in combination with pretty much any piece of ripping software is just about guaranteed win. I went ahead and bought the darn thing. It's definitely worth it.
- lordcanyon, on 04/18/2008, -3/+7the list is mostly about free software with one or two having shareware/trial versions
personaly i do with anydvd and cloneDVD 2
i first used dvd decrypter for a very short time then i found dvd shrink and used that till the one day i found it wouldnt work and i tryed dvdfab that day, i didnt like dvdfab but it did the job.
when they all stoped working for me i found the combo of anydvd and cloneDVD 2 and still use that today. - pheedback, on 04/18/2008, -1/+5Last time I looked DVDFab HD Decrypter had a free version.
I just went here http://www.dvdfab.com/free.htm and they still have the free version. - Juaquin, on 04/18/2008, -0/+4I use ripit4me to rip the disc using DVD Decrypter, then Avi.Net to get it into avi at whatever bitrate I want (usually 1000-1200).
- krische, on 04/18/2008, -1/+5Really Retarded Syndication?
- duluxanon, on 04/18/2008, -4/+8Mac The Ripper FTW
- mogebier, on 04/18/2008, -0/+4DVD Decrypter has not been updated in over a year, so it can't rip the newer DVD's at all. It's becoming useless very quickly.
- 007brendan, on 04/18/2008, -2/+5Not a very good list. AnyDVD got an honorable mention and CloneDVD wasn't even on the list! Easily the best tools out there and the only tools that can rip HDDVD and Bluray (as far as I know). I've used at least 3 of the products on the list and they started sucking about 24 months ago.
- melonhedd, on 04/18/2008, -2/+5What the ***** is a jump?
- daschupa, on 04/18/2008, -1/+4I could never get the windows version of Handbrake to work on any of my machines so it gets no nod from me. The mac version is a must though.
- valkyries, on 04/18/2008, -1/+4anydvd kinda should be on the list, it can rip dvds, HDdvds and Blueray with one program.
- mrblister, on 04/18/2008, -0/+3because television 1. tells you what they're going to tell you, 2. tells you that they are about to tell you, 3. tells you, 4. recaps what just happened, and then at the beginning of the next episode, they 5. tell you what happened last time.
If you are actually counting, after commercials and preview/review, the actual 'Show' lasts about 42 seconds.
So ya, i think it's really freaking annoying when a web article says after the damn jump.
there is no jump.
tools. - NuclearBunny, on 04/18/2008, -0/+3argh! it *should* be "term=after+the+jump"
- subliminalurge, on 04/18/2008, -0/+3Not to take away from ImgBurn, since it's an excellent program, but since when does it decrypt DVDs? The last time I used it to copy a movie, I also had to run AnyDVD along with it.
- MrOdwin, on 04/18/2008, -1/+4DVD-Rebuilder isn't a ripper.
- IJstickI, on 04/18/2008, -0/+3these are all great but this list is missing the best by far ripit4me http://www.videohelp.com/tools/RipIt4Me --- it runs all of the listed programs for you with one click
- Ellsass, on 11/05/2008, -0/+3Why is s/he being dugg down? Most free burning programs don't do DVD video (or a folder of VOB & IFO files). It's why I still use Nero (came with my burner, so it was free for me).
- Brettus, on 04/18/2008, -0/+3This article was posted 1 day ago. I call your shenanigans sir!
- mikm, on 04/18/2008, -0/+2I've always been a fan of dvd::rip.
- loopyloopy, on 04/18/2008, -0/+2and the user interface is beautiful. even rips to any format for portable media players including your DS. ok i'm not spamming this, i was just so impressed when i tried it after being thwarted by a newer Sony DVD with Shrink and Decrypter. (which i owned and just wanted to back up :) )
- mrblister, on 04/18/2008, -1/+3can anyone explain where that came from?
- inactive, on 04/18/2008, -2/+4Ubuntu and AcidRip do fine..
