- inactive, on 02/13/2008, -6/+84Wow, the new back/forward buttons are butt-ugly in XP.
- NeilM, on 02/13/2008, -7/+48The back / forward arrows look awful. Very unfirefox like. Firefox used to have great icons. They used to be very "homely" and comfortable. Then they started adding shine. Now we've receded back to no shine, but the only problem is they look like they were slapped in at the last second. They aren't pixel perfect. The icons differ drastically now. The arrows are different sizes... the refresh icon is thin like a noodle... and every other icon looks plain (especially that ***** star). Someone, PLEASE port the Firefox 2 theme to Firefox 3. Horrible decision mozilla. Absolutely horrible. This version looks UNpolished.
- rspeed, on 02/13/2008, -3/+36Clearly you need some more question and exclamation marks.
- willr001, on 02/13/2008, -3/+34My biggest problem is that the address bar's autocomplet shows the websites you go to with huge text and icons... That means everone that uses my computer can see what porn sites i go to. I'd turn autocomplete off, but then how am i supposed to get to my porn quickly.
- motang, on 02/13/2008, -1/+30It's in the bookmark toolbar. Which can be moved back to it's original place in the customization window.
- motang, on 02/13/2008, -4/+29Firefox 3 is shaping up very well, I really can't use FF 2.0 anymore and I don't even bother with the other browsers.
- dknite, on 02/13/2008, -2/+20Well written article. Great job highlighting all the new features of Beta 3!
- JK1150, on 02/13/2008, -8/+26ugly themes across the board
- Stonekeeper, on 02/13/2008, -7/+25I disagree. It makes sense to have the most used buttons bigger. Looks like it's not available in the linux version.
- mvent2, on 02/13/2008, -0/+17Another great thing is that on Linux it will now use the native print dialog.
- inactive, on 02/13/2008, -3/+17Is it me or does the buttons look a bit like IE?
- rd3k, on 02/13/2008, -0/+13Digg STILL never stops loading!
- NeilM, on 02/13/2008, -7/+19The theme for XP blows *****.
- kalkin, on 02/13/2008, -4/+16is it me or is linux ugly. the default fonts and buttons always look fuzzy and large. just look at the comparisons on that page with the crisp osx and windows screens. but that's besides the point.
really looking forward to ff3. once they sort out online profile synching it will be perfection. - BayAreaKing, on 02/13/2008, -0/+11They finally made Firefox version of OS X more "mac-like"!
- ctrlfreak13, on 02/13/2008, -2/+13Where did the home button go in FF3b3?!?!? (at least on XP)
- sensor, on 02/13/2008, -2/+12Life is difficult. :(
- tuholmes, on 02/13/2008, -2/+11I really like the OS X theme... It fits in with Leopard perfectly. I hated running firefox 3 (Even Beta 2) due to how nasty it looked. This is a remarkable improvement in the style department.
I just set this as my default browser and I don't think I'll be changing it anytime soon. - ozid, on 02/13/2008, -2/+11I agree.
Stonekeeper: I don't think he was talking about the style of the button, just the overall look. I hope it changes before the final release. - dineth, on 02/13/2008, -4/+13all this while and the default theme is still ugly. damn it. linux theme seems to be the best outta them...
- jakem1, on 02/13/2008, -0/+9That's an interesting take on the whole idea of social networking.
- keyo, on 02/13/2008, -0/+9I agree, when I updated today my first reaction was WTF are those fugly buttons doing there! Stick with the tango icon set firefox.
- praveenmarkandu, on 02/13/2008, -4/+12for all you who hate the new theme of he back forward buttons. all you have to do is customize the navigation bar and select use small icons (basically because they havent finalized the small icon theme) . im not a fan of the back forward buttons, but you guys complain a ***** load for something so small. just wait for a user generated theme, or make one yourself if you hate it so much.
- maiku00, on 02/13/2008, -1/+9osx theme is beautiful. wtf @ the xp theme... ***** disgusting
- Frost9999, on 02/13/2008, -0/+8The icons look the same to me. I have 'use small icons' selected. The large-size icons are horrendous though.
- renegadeafk, on 02/13/2008, -1/+7No IE's look better
- DagMX, on 02/13/2008, -0/+6totally agree. the only nie looking one is the OS X one. THe linux theme is bland but usable. The windows theme is just ugly
- RichGC, on 02/13/2008, -1/+7Hell yeah, that giant green back button is like a giant zit, luckily you can get rid of it by using small icons.
- kotatsu, on 02/13/2008, -1/+7I was looking forward to seeing how pretty they could make it look in Vista. Looks like they really dropped the ball on this one. Hopefully it will get better before the final release.
- Batiu-Drami, on 02/13/2008, -0/+6Mozilla shouldn't be expected to make its software run with all GUI mods. It should be the GUI mod's responsibility to make sure it isn't broken by commonly used applications.
- KibibyteBrain, on 02/13/2008, -0/+6Some of it is just poor design work(or sometimes programming work, as programmers don't always stick to API use that allow theme engines to work right), but another(unfortunately growing) problem is patents and IP hindering the ability for Linux GUIs to adapt certain features that their closed source counterparts employ. Even things that are so cheap so as to be free like rendering techniques or fonts themselves to Apple and Microsoft are by merely costing any money at all to license unaffordable to open source desktops.
However, complaining on digg won't help much. Please offer more feedback to the distros that you use or are interested in to make sure that the delusional CEOs/managers of these projects understand that the users of their products understand that design, while not a practical need, is still a paramount demand. Some projects like Fedora have already begun to take the design issue more seriously. - webNV, on 02/13/2008, -0/+6Use a different profile
- trib4lmaniac, on 02/13/2008, -0/+6Thanks, I was wondering that myself. I've never been able to bring myself to allow the bookmark toolbar to take up my valuable screen space.
- mvent2, on 02/13/2008, -2/+8Ryan always uses Lucida Grande in his Linux screenshots, which is an OS X font.
- courtjester555, on 02/13/2008, -0/+5I'm just waiting for an Opera comment...
- inactive, on 02/13/2008, -2/+7I'm sorry but I hope they plan on doing some more work on the Windows versions. Right now the XP and Vista versions look like *****.
Also, no matter how hard they try to make it look like it, they are still not using OS X's built-in GUI API's.
I have a feeling Firefox is just going to bloat it self out of the game. In the end I think Webkit is going to be where it's at in the next few years. The sad part is I was a hardcore FF backer for about 5+ years. - Sugaruss, on 02/13/2008, -0/+5I've always wondered why they haven't improved the looks of the browser myself - to me it is downright ugly.
- tapeworm77, on 02/13/2008, -0/+5One of the great things about Firefox is that you can hover over an URL history item and press the delete key to get rid of it (also works for auto-complete items in search boxes). That way the wife won't be suspicious when she notices the history has been cleared... lol.
- garionw, on 02/13/2008, -0/+5I hope that the vista theme interoperates the vista transparency. IE 7 looks look when transparent, and it would be good if FF could adopt a similar approach
- FiveIron, on 02/13/2008, -0/+5those are some ugly themes, even on a mac, I wont be using the default. I'm particularly fond of the default windows theme from 1.x and hope I can find something. The native widgets is welcome though, more eye candy. Anyone know the projected release date of the finished product?
- andycr512, on 02/13/2008, -1/+5I personally like the way Linux handles fonts, and wince a bit whenever I see fonts on Windows for the first time in a while. I don't know how OS X's fonts compare, since I don't use it.
- Edan25, on 02/13/2008, -0/+4Firefox 2 theme is way more foxy. I could probably change FF3's theme to FF2's anyway though, so it doesn't matter.
- lcmatt, on 02/13/2008, -0/+4If you want to have a look without installing Firefox use the Portable version (now updated to B3)
http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_port ... - luchid, on 02/13/2008, -0/+3Small icons are sort of a usability nightmare when you're on a high res display. You have to aim the pointer to a much smaller area, increasing the time and accuracy it takes. It's annoying. The new theme SUCKS. The colors are way off, the design is bland at best.
- DagMX, on 02/13/2008, -1/+4okay think of i this way, what if you're a new user? What if you don't know abou other themes or how to make your own?
Ugly look makes people prejudiced against a program - Darkhacker, on 02/13/2008, -0/+3I agree completely. WebKit is already being used almost everywhere. Qt 4.4 is going to have it integrated, lots of mobile devices have it, and the Haiku OS project which made the front page recently is even porting WebKit as the rendering engine of choice. It's over twice as fast as Gecko and has a much simpler codebase. The only problem I'm having with it so far is that the GTK+ port is still under development and is missing some features.
- FuzzyCat, on 02/14/2008, -0/+3
Am I the only one that's concerned about the css rending changes? Now we not only have to check which versions of ie people are using but also which versions of FF ...
I really hate browser authors... you all suck, do you hear me.. especially the ie ones who change stuff because it happens to be a Wednesday. You make me hate you because I have to spend a truck load of my time fixing sites because you can't code properly.
I'm going to invent the 'Cranial Browser' that zaps pages straight into your brain... - inactive, on 02/13/2008, -2/+5Ugly is ugly.
- lerker, on 02/13/2008, -0/+3Here's hoping they'll add the polish for the final release candidate.
- Dustmuffins, on 02/13/2008, -0/+3No way he can use Firefox 3.0
