i can't wait for the final release. - Tomgupper, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21Fantastic work GAIM/Pidgin team!
I always had problems with GAIM on win32, Im running Pidgin on Vista now, and it's coo-ing along nicely ( or whatever silly noise pidgeons make ). - riffic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21Newest post from http://www.pidgin.im :
The Final Beta
April 29, 2006 - 11:37PM PDT
Tonight we've released Pidgin 2.0.0beta7. This is the last in our long series of betas. We anticipate a final release later this week.
While previous betas in the 2.0.0 series have been extremely stable, and we recommended their use, this release is actually of beta quality. This is our first release to reflect the name change from Gaim to Pidgin, and so there are a lot of fairly significant changes here, which we'd like to see have broader testing before declaring it ready for release. If you would like to help us out, grab a copy from Sourceforge.net
I strongly recommend that you backup your ~/.gaim directory before running Pidgin for the first time. Windows users should see where their version of Windows sotres their configuration files at our Win32 FAQ. Things you should be on the lookout for include problems with preferences being lost or forgotten, buddy icons not working as you expect, plugins or other external files not properly being found. If you find an issue that severely prohibits you from using 2.0.0beta7, please report it at http://developer.pidgin.im/.
There are a bunch of less fundamental, more cosmetic changes in this release that are sure to jump out at you. A lot of people have contributed a bunch in the transistion from Gaim to Pidgin (and there's still a lot to be done), and we've been all to busy here to thank them all. I plan to acknowledge everyone with the 2.0.0 release. In the meantim, if you want to see what Pidgin developers are thinking, check out our currently-ugly Planet. - alamandrax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Installs over gaim. you don't have to do a thing other than install it.
works fine for me so far. even my logs are intact. - coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17I've been waiting for this since the news. Excited to try this out!
God I'm a nerd. - msmayhew, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14My only complaint is I can't tell what account/protocol each buddy is using. In the older versions it showed the icon of that account/protocol beside the buddy name. Now it just shows the green circle icon. Of course I can hover over the buddy but I would like to glance.
This also affects my conversations. If I have a buddy that is on MSN/AIM/Jabber the chat window icon used to let me know which one we we're currently chatting on. Not it just shows the green circle icon. I have to click the 'Send to' menu and see which is selected. - morriscat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I'll always remember the day GAIM gave us all the bird...
- jignesh22, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Finally , getting close to release 2.0
great work! - khag7, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13WinXP .exe link:
http://easynews.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/pidgin/pidgin-2.0.0beta7.exe - CLShortFuse, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11yes, but if it's not meant to be "confused" with pidgeons, then explain the pidgeon during the win32 installation
- grevvvvvv, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15I'm using it right now. The complete icon overhaul is really annoying me.
- CybrStuff, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Pious Pidgin's already claimed by Ubuntu for a 2012 release (right after Obstreperous Otter)...

I just compiled it, and the graphical improvements are great. They hired a guy from Tango to help out. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10get over it.
- robrichard, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9anyone have a .deb for ubuntu?
- MackDiesel2010, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Does this install over Gaim or do I have to completely uninstall and lose all my settings?
- motang, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Really I like the new icon set, much better than the one before. Also the older was getting a bit outdated.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I posted a few on my blog, but it's nothing too different from what's already been posted:
http://www.cityeyesphoto.com/blog/2007/04/30/everyone-should-be-using-pidgin-im/ - swany1012, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11It will grow on you.
- rickst13, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8To me, it looks cleaner than their old icons. I'm liking it so far.
- john2kx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7any improvement to the AIM-protocol file transfer feature? It never worked that well under previous versions of gaim.
- americamatrix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Heres the changelog -
http://developer.pidgin.im/browser/ChangeLog
http://www.pidgin.im/ChangeLog - euvirtual, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5or install like this: "sudo dpkg -i --force-overwrite pidgin_2.0.0beta7-1_i386.deb" if you don't want to lose your ubuntu-desktop meta package.
- henhowc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I suggest that everyone wait a week as according to the developer's mailing list, they are trying to have a final non-beta version out by the middle of this week. If anyone's interested, I took a quick screenshot of the beta build running on Windows Vista Aero.
http://henhowc.bol.ucla.edu/pidgin20beta.jpg - iofthestorm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I've been refreshing their timeline page (http://developer.pidgin.im/timeline) constantly, looking for commits that indicate a new release ever since I saw on their mailing list that the beta was coming out soon. It was supposed to come out on Saturday, but instead came out sometime after 10:30PM PDT (last time I checked before I pulled myself away from the computer.) So yeah, you're not alone, and this is digg after all.
- archlich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5no worky on linux
- rickst13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I have some friends who only use google talk while at work and aim while at home, or vice versa. Seeing the protocol allows me to quickly know who I can IM and what I can IM them about.
- henhowc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I'm sure it has to do with their settlement with AOL.
- DrGamez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5What changed?
- aahpandasrun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Change log anyone?
- maddox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Screenshot: http://www.firespam.com/pidgin.jpg
- ahill7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5One question, I can understand the GUI revamp, but why completely throwing out the yellow man?
- hlynch1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i like it except for the mobile icons. i like the mobile icons but think they should just replace the green dot with mobile icon for mobile users.
- emblemparade, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Here's a little known secret about IM file transfer: even on "original" clients, it's always inconsistent in how it works. Pray to the IM gods whenever you send or receive!
Except for... Skype! Just like voice chat tends to always just plain work with Skype, and work well, so does file transfer: it transfers, and as fast as can be. From my experience, if you can logon with Skype, you're set with file transfer. I keep Skype installed just for that reason. (On both Ubuntu and Windows XP) - coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Looks good, henhowc. Yeah I'd suggest anyone looking to totally replace their current IM tool wait until the final comes out. I've noticed a few things missing.
Edit: Never mind. Figured it out. - rickst13, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Does anyone know of a way to tell which protocol someone is using besides hovering over their names? While I like the green dots, there are many times I want to know what protocol another is using.
- archlich, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homonym
- lonniebiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I agree; I hope the Pidgin developers read this feedback. I like the GUI to distinguish between IM providers without the extra step of hovering over the contact.
- killerofkiller, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4grr OTR doesnt work though
- micklerlop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3when are they going to add msnp 13+ support?
- nrbelex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ rickst13 - See this bug report... http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/474#comment:1
- henhowc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You COULD just hit CTRL+Enter if you want to enter line breaks into your IM. Which is honestly much easier (IMHO) than having to toggle an option everytime you want to set a different default behavior :)
- KoZo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Can I view WebCams with pidgin?
- renegadeafk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Finally works for me, never has before
- sremick, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Wow... ugly new icons, lame new name, refusal to put any effort into making file transfer work (with excuses about it being "hard" yet somehow every other program like Trillian seems to do it fine).... they're really trying to make me ditch them and find a new program. What the hell? And I thought the Gnome developers were bad about pushing their eccentric preferences on the masses...
- felesaerius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pidgin is lining up to really end up a much better program than Gaim ever was... I've said it before and I'll say it again... great job Pidgin team! Love the work!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I looked on SF, but the changelog was blank...
- henhowc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't think this is going to change guys. Read what the developers have to say on this issue...
http://www.pidgin.im/~seanegan/cgi-bin/pyblosxom.cgi/identity.html - riffic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4oh I guess there was a typo here, they corrected it to say 2007 on their website.
