- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -8/+54and what are you bitching about? automatic updates?
- borninda818, on 10/11/2007, -3/+35if it was msft i would be pissed but for firefox it's good...they are security updates not genuine advantage.
- R34C7, on 10/11/2007, -12/+41Is it just me or does Firefox actually just download the update in the background and then forces the update on the next opening. I am sure this can be shut off, but it is a reasonable explanation of why this is true...
- ablez3, on 10/11/2007, -3/+27that is because IE users are the same morons who buy AOL broadband.
- cougar618, on 10/11/2007, -2/+22This method is TONS better than the way Microsoft does it on XP. Firefox doesn't annoy you with restarting your browser every 20 minutes like XP does. If i say later right now, why would I change my mind 20 minutes later? Thats why XP, and therefore, IE, doesn't stay up to date.
Downloading the updates in the background and installing them when the user wants to shut down the computer makes way more sense than being annoyed every 20 minutes. Its windows: its gonna need a reboot anyways, so just wait. - redlemon, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15that 11.96% is probably the group of people that paid for it before it was free and cant believe the free version could be as good.
- romulasry, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11"They also a stick of RAM every month to keep Firefox smooth running"
Engrish, much? - Buttercup, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10thank you captain obvious. firefox does every bit of work for you. you don't even have to wait at an inopportune moment. all you do is click "ok!" and it does the rest.
it makes me wonder why developers of other software programs don't make updating as easy as it is in firefox. - chrisgeleven, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Actually, many Firefox users are people who were had Firefox recommended to them by geeks.
For example, for once I actually feel that my parents and grandparents are safe, because of Firefox's auto update. Firefox security updates are almost always released within hours (or at worst, a few days) of a security vulneribility made public. I know that within a day or so, everyone that I know that uses Firefox is up-to-date.
With Windows and IE? It can be real hit and miss, even if auto updates is turned on. Although it is a lot better then it used to be thanks to Windows XP SP2. - Jammerdelray, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Looking foward to the first beta of firefox 3.0 in july
- alanrice38181, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9well how can you explain opera's stats. I would have thought they would be just as 'computer savvy' as Firefox users? Yes? No?
Yet 11.96% of Opera 9 users aren't up to date. - axentrix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6One other reason might be that firefox users actually are aware that they are using a browser, and many IE users think they are using "the internet". Why update the internet?
- ishmal, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Well, if you use a nightly, then you get an update every day, regardless.
- xkidace, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7and how much RAM is needed to run IE with the mountains of spy ware and garbage is so "mistakenly" lets in?
- Kratos76, on 10/11/2007, -5/+9OMG, you people are all idiots. Tools > Options > Advanced > Updates >
Choose to automatically download and install or "ask me what I want to do" - cougar618, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Yeah, it does download in the background, but im bitching about the fact that after downloading, Windows wants you to stop what your're doing and reboot. Yeah, i know you can chose to install updates when you wanna, and I made it that way. but it's so ***** annoying when you're doing something and every 20-30 minutes having windows ask to reboot the comp.
- Katana314, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Kind of a misleading title; it's not the USERS that are keeping up to date, it's the developers.
- bjerkeweb, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7To whom does this come as a surprise? In other news, Firefox renders sites better than IE!
- pauliewoll, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Dugg up for excellent use of grammar.
- citsym, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Opera's stats are explained by the fact that Opera doesnt have a smart-updater. Yes, Opera notifies you about an update but then you need to go and download the entire installer again.
Update Manager would be included in Opera soon. - Terr01, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7I'm surprised at the stats for Opera. It could be that it just has so few problems people forget to check :P
- Cablito, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I havent seen anyone bend the facts like this before... well, other than Bush.
- ortucis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1What I was really trying to say is that Opera is a safe browser, updates or no updates for ages. I guess that's a bad reason to justify a 'good update system' but then the only fixes they release come with new features which means you just download a small 4 MB file with all the fixes inside (they release lot's of beta but you don't have to bother with them at all for security or anything else).
EDIT: Either way, it doesn't matter. Opera and FF both are better than anything IE and I don't want to flame any of them... excluding IE. - lulzlulzlulz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3http://digg.com/tech_news/Is_Digg_Using_Secret_Moderators_to_Censor_It_s_Users
- ortucis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Considering I have both FF and Opera installed...
You think too much? - Wootery, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2We know.
- Wootery, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3No, but it does mean you'll get rightly buried for posting such a stupid comment.
- bombadil78, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1it keeps my bookmarks secure by deleting them for every update too
SWEET! - Wootery, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2"That's the difference and reason why Opera users don't even bother with updating (and why there are no auto updates)"
Why am I thinking you're a fanboy... - Topher06, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3Except sites designed with IE in mind, which is a lot of them.
- maintman357, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3When msft tried to update my xp to IE 7.0 it locked everything up. I had to manually delete the crap & started using Firefox.
- Xizer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Impressive apostrophe usage.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Captain Obvious strikes again!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3You don't just magically get spyware because you use IE. Don't be a stupid user that surfs seedy websites with tons of intrusive ads. No amount of memory will make a spyware infested computer run normally anways.
- ortucis, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2I can use Opera 5 right now (that is, not update it to current version) and still it will be ten times safer to browse net compared to IE or FF. That's the difference and reason why Opera users don't even bother with updating (and why there are no auto updates).
- Wootery, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1No. You were trying to justify Opera not having a good update system. My assumption was logical, albeit wrong.
- awahid, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I love FireFox
- mancat, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2"Downloading the updates in the background and installing them when the user wants to shut down the computer makes way more sense than being annoyed every 20 minutes. Its windows: its gonna need a reboot anyways, so just wait."
It does that too. - tybris, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2Does this mean I should switch to a crappier browser because the other people using my browser (Opera) don't install updates?
- 11arrows, on 10/11/2007, -14/+12This really isn't that surprising. Not to sound elitist, but fact is most Firefox users are more computer savvy. Generally, IE users use it because it came with the system and they don't even know there is an alternative.
- syafthegeek, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1Firefox is much better than IE in terms of security but it eat up a lot of RAM and hogging my CPU.
- wwwdot1jesdotus, on 10/11/2007, -7/+4I think that should read "people who keep up to date use Firefox".
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -10/+5They also a stick of RAM every month to keep Firefox smooth running
- LordSalisbury, on 10/11/2007, -5/+0FREE MARKET Bizintines!
- JasonCox, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2"it makes me wonder why developers of other software programs don't make updating as easy as it is in firefox."
Users tend to get pissed off when the application starts downloads in the background, updates itself and complains that it wants to restart when you're in the middle of everything. Users are stupid, they dont see the 'restart later' button, only 'OK' - PrometheuZ, on 10/11/2007, -9/+1Oh please, I haven't had any issues with IE, no hacks, no nuthin'...am I the only bright bulb on the frickin' block? C'mon already! They both work, and actually, IE is faster loading, it's a simple fact...I use Firefox for the extensions.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -19/+8Firefox users also lead the way in sales at www.crucial.com
I only have 8 Gigs of RAM, so no FF for me.
