- MrBabyMan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+69What?! You're kidding, right?
- neave, on 10/12/2007, -2/+40It's fascinating that Firefox usage goes up at weekends, implying home users prefer Firefox but their office doesn't allow standalone installations and so people are forced to use IE at work. Something needs to be done about this...
- ZaNkY, on 10/12/2007, -6/+40Don't you just love all the trolls that are native to the Digg environment?
I would say quite the opposite. Firefox has made a good 5% increase in market share in 2006 alone, and isn't slowing down. The fact that Europe is at 23.2% doesn't surprise me. I seriously believe that by the end of 2007 we may be seeing a near 50-50 split between IE and Firefox. - AlmostEvil, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29I wonder why, could it be because Windows XP has automatic updates enabled by default?
With IE 7 as classed as a "critical update" being automatically installed, that isn't surprising. Already at work i've seen when people bring in their home machines for me to have a look at IE 7 has been installed automatically.
People aren't particularly installing IE 7 by choice, it's more a case of that it's being forced upon them. That said, if someone is only going to use IE i'd prefer they use 7 over 6. - renegadeafk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30If they think firefox is too technical, they shouldn't be using a computer
- ldavid, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27Why firefox is better than ie7:
http://getanewbrowser.com/2006/11/why-firefox-is-better-than-ie-7-reason-1/ - Flipsen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24My (high)school here in Holland (EUROPE) has gone open-source two years ago, all terminals running openoffice, linux, firefox, etc etc.
Works better then ever. - Rigbymatt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22nerdier than ever too i'll bet
rock on firefox - chedabob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18We have Firefox at college, so Im happy :D
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Europeans. The only group of people that hates Microsoft more than digg users.
- GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12They won't be confused. I know loads of people who can use both systems. All that will happen is they will learn multiple systems and see the issues of cross platform working and as a result will understand things like open standards.
Its not difficult to be proficient in multiple systems. - EvilPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Firefox User Agent Switcher - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/59/
- feoza, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Our uni has firefox on all pcs along with ie. Everyone opens up firefox anyway...ie really is a piece of junk
- b3mus3d, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13"I think the main reason Firefox isn't beating IE (yet) is because IE comes preinstalled with most pcs in the world"
Captain Obvious is here!
Seriously though, duh. Of course you have an enormous advantage if everyone has your product automatically.
I don't think it's that people find firefox 'too technical' or anything, just that they don't know you CAN change browser, or that there is any reason too.
I'm 15, and I've told a few people to switch (after ridding their computer of spyware and other crap) and had to explain what exactly a web browser was in some cases. - suiraCLAW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12You can still run portable firefox (which doesn't need to be installed) at work/school...
http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable - chedabob, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15I think the main reason Firefox isn't beating IE (yet) is because IE comes preinstalled with most pcs in the world (im talking Dells, HP, etc.), and people just don't want to change, because they either don't like change, or because they think Firefox is too technical.
- TheReport, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11"We live in a post IE7 world, people. 2007 will be remembered as the year Firefox died."
You've got alot of balls coming in here and saying that. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16Firefox was the next best thing known to man. One day I just started using Firefox and everything started making sense.
- nick34, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9You sir, have a lot to learn this year.

- jconnop, on 10/12/2007, -11/+19Feeling prouder than ever wearing my Firefox t-shirt right now ^_^
- chedabob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Internet Explorer is closed source, so when hackers starting attacking it, it takes ages to get a patch done, tested, and released. Whereas with firefox, a patch can go from concept to release within 24 hours. So hackers will start to concentrate on Firefox, but the community will be patching the holes just as fast.
- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8IF you simply teach them how to use computers and have them learn a few OS's (not that bloody hard people) then they will be better off. When I was 7/8 years old I taught myself how to use an Amiga COmmodore 64. When we switched to windows, it tooke me ten minutes to figure out. When I switched to Mac OSX, it took me no time at all, when I switched to Linux I knew enough to find a command line tutorial.
If you only expose them to one System then they will only know how to use one System. - readme, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Why Firefox market share will continue to rise:
http://weblog.bbzzdd.com/archives/media/google-ff.png
That's what I see when I go to Google in IE. - weddle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I switched to Firefox a few days ago from IE. The only thing I have to say is I cannot believe that it took me this long!
- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9No, most technicians don't love Firefox. Most technicians have simply built their career and education around one Microsoft product and aren't likely to let anything come in that detracts from their usefulness. That's why it's important to have a broad field of expertise.
If you think I'm nuts, I work for a company that supports the Federal governments tech, a lot of the IRM people we deal with are the biggest source of FUD when it comes to any non-microsoft product. When you go to their desks, the only degrees or certificates they have are emblazoned with the MS logo. - noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Isn't there an extension for Fx that makes it broadcast itself as IE? I could have sworn I cam across that at one point.
- marnaq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@chedabob
My school is all Linux. About 200 computers total. - AlmostEvil, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9There are a few reasons for this, i'd say the biggest reason i've chosen not to implement Firefox at my work is the lack of group policy support. Yes, I know there is a third party program that does this, however I would much prefer native support rather than something bolted on.
I did try a small trial of a few users a while back, I got nothing but complaints and hassle. It's not that Firefox isn't a great browser (it is). It's because users are so set in their ways and unwilling to try something different. - Nicolay77, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5With Opera, patches have went from concept to release within 24 hours. Not simply a possibility, but a reality.
IE slowness to patch bugs is more about MS size and bureaucracy than about being closed source. - JorgeGT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5We have IE6 in high school. THE HORROR.
And our teacher is some sort of evil sysadmin who stores every user profile on his central server, and erases everything on session log off. - akan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6yes, that IS interesting, however, i disagree. at my school, we clearly do not have administrator rights, so instead, we told it to 'install' to a Desktop folder and run it from there. Windows is happy because it doesn't try to put files in anything BUT the desktop icon, which is synchronized with the server like regular files. So what I'm trying to say here is that although people may not be allowed, that doesn't stop us all. Granted, if you violate a company policy, you are probably in some hot water, but people will always be finding ways around policies.
- thefreshbeats, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9And the numbers for North Korea have arrived:
0 - Not Allowed - sameerb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+465 % of Digg users use firefox
http://digg.com/linux_unix/65_Digg_users_use_Firefox_3_times_that_of_Internet_explorer - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5teh techs at my school are right bastards, apparently they fix PCs. But when they order new Dells, some of them are supplied with an XP CD, and they sell those at computer fairs... *****.
- ekosystem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Wake up USA !!
- Lion29, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Haha! Yep! We Slovenian rocks! ;)
We know what best out there.. and I am trying my best to promote firefox wherever I can... but IE still has a lot of advantage since is coming bundled with windows... so the fresh computer users doesn't know that something far better exists!
and there is the problem of schools and government institutions... they all have contracts so they kinda depends on the M$ products... and in schools there's the problem that was mentioned before... not having the administrative rights to install other software... and "old school" teachers that know better :S
But we are on the way... it's nice to see that our effort finally pays of... Slovenia is leading... the whole world! :D We are a great example... at least we have this :D - redfan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I use Firefox at work, even though our IT dept "doesn't support" it... i.e. MS pays them to not encourage us to use more secure browsers.
Wow... 40.5% in Slovenia, 39.3% in Finland. Nice. - krampo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Is it firefox alone or browsers like Camino are also in those 23.2%?
- Marthinus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It seems Europe is becoming more and more open minded regarding FOSS. I like it, maybe soon we will see some new revolutionary & popular software emerging from the EU,
- rdkleine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Study carried out between 24/07/2006 to 29/10/2006 on all websites audited by XiTi, see methodology for further details."
"Only web visits from France are taken into account in this study."
Great piece of research, the research is limited to French sites AND websites audited by XiTi..... - CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6To play the devil's advocate, even before it was pushed to windows update, IE7 had more users than FF2 at launch. That was on the front page long ago.
- Stonekeeper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The UK stats are embarrassing
- dacomputerfreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Also part of the reason for black hat hackers attacking IE rather than FF is because of Microsoft and it's smugness and attempt at complete control of the browser market. Microsoft makes empty claims of excellent security and those who are informed know that's far from the truth, whereas Mozilla's reasoning behind the better security is because anyone with skill can help in the effort. Some very skilled black hats may be tempted to help out with the Firefox project in a positive way.
- techiet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Firefox on the desktop and Opera on the cell phone?
Either way, IE7 doesn't look like it'll win. - biggbrother, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What's meant by "geeky alternative"? IE7 is a Firefox clone
- chedabob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Maybe when you buy your new pc, you should be given a few questions, like what browser you want (you know, during the user setup), what office suite, etc. It would show people that there are alternatives.
