Tabbed browsing for porn makes it so much faster! I love FireFox. It's Great! - aepex, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33Hah, no wonder I couldn't find an extension to do this. I've been outsmarted by my own web browser.
- Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23I use this feature so much. I've got one for Wikipedia, UbuntuForums, ScrapeTorrent, Mininova, and IsoHunt. But the keywords don't seem to transfer over if you import your bookmarks into another profile, or Google BrowserSync syncs a new one.

It is the thing I like most about FireFox. Combined with tabbed browsing, it's great. Just hit CTRL + T and the keyword, followed by what you're looking for. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20yeh i agree with lukeo, you can do things like type 'the last samurai imdb' and it leads you straight to http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0325710/ .
or 'wiki linux' and you go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux
so yeh just elaborating on what lukeo said. - lukeo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21I've found I don't have to set up any keywords for anything. I think firefox does a google i'm feeling lucky search for whatever you enter into the address bar that isn't a URL. So, if I want google maps in the uk, I can type map google uk, or amazon just type amazon etc. etc.
Though I'm sure there is extra functionality when you use the keyword feature, it is already pretty useful just typing in the address bar. - ttony, on 10/12/2007, -8/+23Great feature! Opera does this also - same way; right click on the search box...choose "Create Search" etc....

It's the final and inexcusable proof that the 9/11 conspiracy is true.
However, it has been decided that you can't handle the truth. - Tredici, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8My quick search bar is now pitifully redundant. =[
- rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7here are some more:
b = boobs
c = chi chis
g = groceries
h = hooters
t = tatas
y = yabos - slikwacko, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9You can also use F6.

- csrster, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Our chief weapon is Firefox ... and Opera ... Our _two_ chief weapons are Firefox, Opera and an almost fanatical devotion to Open Sou.. Amongst our chief weapons are ...
- Margh, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Please introduce us all to your wonderful unified worldwide ISO timezone?
- Tredici, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Also, with the cursor in the quick search bar, Ctrl + ↑ and Ctrl + ↓ will cycle through your installed search engines. Heh, who needs a mouse?
- cryptoknight, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4ok you still dont get it halifax say i have a website that i search often http://foo.com/search
well instead of having to click the bookmark to goto foo.com then scroll down and so my search
i can add a bookmark for http://foo.com/search/$1 (or similar RTFA!) and give it a key word of f
now all i have to do is in my address bar type "f my search term" and it will translate that into
foo.com/search/my search term
!magic!
get it now? - subsonik, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6'Y' and 'T' are right next to each other on the keyboard, man! How hard can be bloody be?
This message brought to you by the letters "F" and "U". Put the gun down! I was only kidding! of course, "U" and "2" are better! No, don't! :) - parax, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Keyword feature for bookmarks is one of my favorite things about Firefox. I have it set for every site I visit frequently. TFD dictionary searches, wikipedia, digg, slashdot, and about 50 other sites.
The lack of the keyword feature was actually the only thing that kept me from switching to the Flock browser. Because it is based on Firefox, I was very disappointed they went out of their way to actually remove or overwrite the feature. - arrancar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, Yubnub.org does the same thing, and you don't have to create or transfer them, just create one keyword for yubnub.
- finalcut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3ALT-D is there so people using IE can keep using the same key sequence in both browsers.
I wish ctrl-L worked in IE because I have been using it in FF forever. - corevette, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6The keywords work for me transferring from computer to computer.
I have one for Wikipedia, Filext, Ubuntu Forums, and Digg. - spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3But that doesn't let you search those websites. Keywords aren't designed to help you get to the homepage, they're designed to get you to one dynamic page past the home page.
You should set up a quick search keyword for "bt" and put this as the address: http://btjunkie.org/search?q=%s
Then in your address bar type "bt linux" and you'll search btjunkie for linux in one command! - petepete, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4li for lipsum.com; saves me about 2 minutes a week
- destinyland, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8I love keywords!
I created the keyword "map" for Google maps, "Amazon" for Amazon, "youtube" for YouTube. Now if I need a map, a book, or a video, I can be instantly taken one with a single command. (I use keyboard shortcuts, so I don't even need to use the mouse.
CNTRL-L
map 1616 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, DC - Soave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This has been one of my favorite features in Firefox. I find myself typing these shortcuts in on my friends' computers just as a habit. Here's what I have, along with a suggestion for Wikipedia:
AMA - Amazon
G - Google
GI - Google Images
MAP - Google Maps
IGN - IGN
IMDB - IMDB
LF - Last.fm
MW - Merriam-Webster (Dictionary)
TOR - Torrent Spy
UG - Ultimate Guitar
UD - Urban Dictionary
W - Wikipedia (I suggest making this http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=site%3Aen.wikipedia.org+%s&btnG=Search because Wikipedia's own search function sucks. By searching Google using site:wikipedia.org, you can find results a lot easier, with snippets of the page too.)
YT - YouTube
Note: I don't think this was mentioned in the article, but you can simply bookmark a search result, and then change the search word in the URL to "%s"
For example, search Google for like "AAAA" and then when you get the URL, replace "AAAA" with "%s". This is useful if you want to customize the search, such as the Wikipedia recommendation I made. - redforty, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Ctrl-E will put the cursor into the quicksearch bar in the top right.
- mrRB, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Actually, Gawt, you don't need to open a new tab first. Enter the keyword as normal, then hit Alt+Enter. It'll open in a new tab. This also works with searches.
And Moylan, I believe FF 2.0 and higher has a preassigned 'wp' keyword for Wikipedia, unless you already have one. Try it. - boberto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2my favorites:
dict for dictionary
wiki for wikipedia
bp for baseball prospectus (comes in use for those fantasy sports obsessive types like me) - DiZASTiX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yeah, I use keywords every day. It does transfer for me though, if I just transfer all my bookmarks to another profile, they go along with em. wiki = wikipedia, def = dictionary, the = thesarus, zon = amazon, mini = mininova, iso = isohunt, imdb = imdb, weather = weather.com etc.....
- FickyFicky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Achalemoipas
Thanks a lot...that made me spit coffee all over my keyboard.
If this were IRC, that little exchange would be at the top of bash.
- jrieth50, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Monkey - you're confusing two completely different Opera features. One is a bookmark search which covers your keywords, the other is actually using your keywords in the URL bar to perform a search.
- eolite, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Doesn't yubnub provide the same functionality
It also can be used cross-browser, not just cross-machine. - Monkeyget, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Actually opera does this better :
you can press shift+f2 and enter the BEGINNING of the keyword. Opera will open the bookmark as soon as it finds a unique match. No need to type the entire keyword.
So for example if you have a keyword "digg" that goes to digg.com you can press "shift+f2 d" and digg will appear immediatly.
There is no faster way to go to a webpage in any browser. I couldn't live without it. - wyrlor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Ctrl + L works on Windows too.
- Ben174, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ctrl-Shift-T to re-open a recently closed tab.
- Emilio8605, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I used to use this feature in Opera too. It was one of the things that I thought it had over Firefox. Mozilla should really advertise this feature more.
- themoose, on 10/12/2007, -8/+9Another feature that was first in Opera and copied by firefox.
- Bokista, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For non-search keywords:
Keyword Bar is a good extension in case you've created duplicates or can't remember what you set for a page
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1043
I also turned on the 'add keyword when adding a bookmark' for new sites in the UI Tweaker extension
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1342 - brianrlawson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2When introducing people to Firefox, this feature, more than any other, gets the most oohs and ahhs.

Create multiple bookmarks.
@tylerdurden0 wrote:

I do this. In some cases, it simply for memorization. If I forget s.d I know s.digg is there.
I also always place the keyword in the Description field so that it appears in a column in the Bookmarks organizer, otherwise, you have to open each one to check. - RoroCo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Especially since you can hit ctrl with enter and the browser automatically fills in the "www." and ".com"
- TylerDurden0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just curious, but why would you want more than one?
- treehead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mine are fairly geeky. Examples...
Searches are prepended "s." and if a URL follows, add a carrot ">"
s.g = Google Search
s.gi = Google Image Search
s.gs> = Google Site Search (E.G.: s.gs> digg.com slackware)
Action keywords are prepended "e." for entry or "go." for a shortcut
e.digg> http://some.url/to/submit/to/digg
e.gmark> http://some.url/to/bookmark/at/google
go.dc = Digg Comments - giid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1keywords are definitely where's it at, my list is very similar to others:
fm - freshmeat search
a - amazon search
p - php.net manual search
ud - urban dictionary
d - dictionary.com
g - google
j - search at java.sun.com
w - wikipedia
mw - merriam webster
n - newegg.com
I think I'm going to add some more from other people's suggestions. - unknamed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's always night in outerspace.
- theaceoffire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't forget, your browser see's the keyword, and everything after is a variable (such as %s).
^_^ So if you go to tinyurl.com, and make a keyword, you can type "tinyurl http:\google.com" and make a tiny url of google.
You can do the same with hugeurl.com, and anything else that takes a string.... ^_^ NEAT! - firepowered, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yup this feature is hot been using it for a while:
gg - google
wp - wikipedia
my - movies.yahoo
yt- youtube - bewareofcabbage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1After reading comments here about bookmark synching not supporting these keywords - I wondered if Foxmarks would pick up on my newly created keywords for some of my bookmarks and transfer them to my other PC - and it did, so if your current bookmark syncing tool doesn't ... Foxmarks does.
- deflective, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1if they left permissions open to do that they'd already have firefox installed
