- XisZ, on 10/10/2007, -14/+268400 Million downloads does not equal to 400 Million users.
But, congrats on that Mozilla. - deadbaby, on 10/10/2007, -16/+175Who ISN'T catching Microsoft asleep at the wheel these days? They're becoming the classic example of a company losing direction and resting on their past successes. I don't think anyone with real power in Microsoft's upper tier of management cares much anymore. They're just waiting to retire and cash in their stock options. If they can limp through the next decade I bet some of the young guys (who are probably engineers today) will revitalize the company once the dead-weight leaves.
- Jareth86, on 10/10/2007, -8/+139Their refusal to support png transparency was proof enough of their being asleep at the wheel. Their current refusal to support svg images is proof that they still are.
- Bricks, on 10/10/2007, -6/+112They aren't alseep!! They're just, resting their eyes a little for a second or... zzzzz
- MBHoy, on 10/10/2007, -6/+77This comment is best viewed in Firefox.
- superkendall, on 10/10/2007, -2/+65You know how the default home page is Google? They actually get quite a bit of revenue from that. I believe there are other sources as well.
- idiotwithastick, on 10/10/2007, -1/+63ads: whenever people click on ads from the google search box or from google searches made from the firefox start page, Mozilla makes a bit of change. There was an article a while back about how Mozilla made $50 million from this process.
- MiDri, on 10/10/2007, -4/+61Ya, I've downloaded it at least 100 times by my self (I have a lot of machines, and I reformat a lot...)
- DownloadThis, on 10/10/2007, -7/+56I recommended Firefox to my sister. She downloaded it, but forgot where it was located. Being too lazy to search, she just downloaded it a second time.
- sheepdays, on 10/10/2007, -3/+51This is a question from ignorance: How does Mozilla make money?
- minorthreat, on 10/10/2007, -6/+50I know I can account for at least 100 of those downloads(personally), if not more over the past 3 or so years
- francyci, on 10/10/2007, -5/+49And I have installed it on over 300 machines after having downloaded it only once. Perhaps we are canceling each other out?
- postaldave, on 10/10/2007, -2/+42that was the most polite threads i have ever read on digg.
good job guys! i never understood how they made money either. - zcreem, on 10/10/2007, -1/+37The biggest thing that keeps me using FF is the add ons, Ad Blocker alone saves my sanity daily.
And no it doesn't kill advertising revenue I still click on the interesting Google text ads, just no flashy in you face graphics, pop ups, pop unders, overs or outs. - Eldoo77, on 10/10/2007, -1/+34You can thank the Mozilla team for all the improvements in IE7. Basically, MS sat on their tails for years until there was some real competition.
- capiCrimm, on 10/10/2007, -3/+32look at IBM. Who would have thought they would be the Open Source Advoate they are today?
- ryodoan, on 10/10/2007, -3/+29When they used to have 99% of the market, I would consider a 13% gain by anyone catching MS "asleep at the wheel."
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+29No no, they've got a bug in their eye and their trying to suffocate it..
/peter griffin - superkendall, on 10/10/2007, -5/+29How do you figure the 360 is more successful? AFAIK the sales of said system have been a little slower than the original XBox (mostly I think due to price, but also some concerns over stability).
Also I would hardly lump the Zune in there if you are trying to argue the case for any section of Microsoft being competent. Even the Sandisk Sansa outsells the Zune! And I'll bet it would continue to outsell a flash based Zune as well. - Jammerdelray, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25So basically Firefox 3 Final is going to be about 5 months over due. :(
- Danikar, on 10/10/2007, -9/+32I am not sure exactly how accurate these stats are, but according to w3c Internet Explorer usage is defenty on a huge decline.
http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp - DeviantSeptum, on 10/10/2007, -5/+28They also sell trinkets like mugs and t-shirts and sell a huge amount of cocaine.
- Chewie67, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20Microsoft in the 2000's == IBM in the 1980's
Once the dominant player in their market, then lost it quickly. - idiotwithastick, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21w3schools is not the same as w3c; all this shows is that the visitors of w3schools use firefox more than any. you could pull up statistics from digg and say the same thing.
- Buelldozer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20Sorry guys, that was me. I had a wget command running in a loop. I've turned it off now so things should get back to normal.
- darkNiGHTS, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19Opera did not invent tabbed browsing. Why does everyone think that?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tabbed_browsing#History - sheepdays, on 10/10/2007, -4/+23Thanks!
- rwallen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17Numbers are going to be different depending on who is doing the data gathering. One of the websites I built for a client that averages about 1000 unique visits a day sees about 76% of its traffic from Firefox users. Another I made that averages about 400 unique visitors a day has only 42% of its visitors using Firefox. Coding still needs to be done for more than 1 browser. I always try to code for ie 6,7 firefox 2 and safari (even though safari is usually less than 1%)
- slightlyoffbeat, on 10/10/2007, -2/+18Kind of like the guy in school who insulted everyone to feel better about himself...oops...sorry dissurmom
- wendelgee2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16oo, and to support OggVorbis in WMP...I mean, why the hell not? Just to spite us?
- Menagan, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18 It isn't very surprising. Mozilla Firefox has just an amazing list of features; just to name a couple, the "Restore Session" option (which is a personal favorite of mine, after those damned power outages) and the changeable browser skin, just to personalize the interface that much more.
- cquilliam, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17On an alternate thought, i've downloaded it a few times but have installed it on hundreds of machines at work. I know this is not the norm, but there are some of those cases as well.
- schoate09, on 10/10/2007, -5/+19Too bad 95% of the 85% of the web users out there will just leave your ***** site. And the important sites? None of them will do this, because they're not dumb ***** like you, and realize it's not worth isolating that much of their market. Digg me down, but it's the truth.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Indeed, I believe the sole aesthetic that Microsoft used in designing IE7 was "Make sure the Google Toolbar looks out of place".
- kenvsryu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13She sounds hot.
- hunchback, on 10/10/2007, -6/+19Don't get cocky Firefox team, still lots of stability problems, certain situations, Firefox hangs, in the same situation, Opera doesn't even flinch, I'm talking about running Javascript and plugins. Firefox really sucks at these, sucks at plugins (flash, quicktime, PDF etc first load) and cannot handle Javascript heavy pages well, it wants to quit and sometimes does just that.
- gn0stik, on 10/10/2007, -4/+16Now maybe someone in MS will take the hint and fix their damn browser so it's standards compliant.
- wedges, on 10/10/2007, -6/+18i have personally downloaded Firefox roughly 20 times, so i really doubt that 400million number is all too significant.
- rationalist, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13I think you missed the point. We shouldn't have to "design for IE" or any other browser in particular. That's the whole idea behind standards - design once, works everywhere. Microsoft is the primary, if not the sole, reason we're still in the Web equivalent of the "hand-code Postscript for your printer" phase.
- xxTazxx, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13Man that's sad.
- schoate09, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11I Dugg you up for the truth about the Zune, but the 360 is selling far faster than the original Xbox did.
- neko, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11I get it straight through the Debian and Ubuntu repositories, which won't impact their counter either.
- DjArcadian, on 10/10/2007, -4/+14The worst thing Microsoft did was release IE7 with that horrid looking interface. I can't figure out where all the buttons are. Can't wait for Firefox 3.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+14just think if Netscape had actually spent its money on their product as opposed to their lawyers, they might not look like dumb asses.
- kettlechips, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11They're not asleep, they're driving drunk!!
- uptown, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9See that little Google search box up in the corner? Know the default Google search homepage that many people leave as the default?
Cha ching.... - ryodoan, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11speaking of svg images.... Here is one that is relevant to this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Layout_engine_usage_share.svg
- JoshHendo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I use it.
- svivian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Well it's original planned release date according to http://www.mozilla.org/projects/firefox/roadmap.html was "Quarter 1, 2007", so it's at least 6 months overdue already. :p
- Darph.Bobo, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10I think it's pretty safe to say waiting 5 years between releases in the software world for a major product used by billions qualifies as sound asleep!
