- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -16/+36What is firefox? I am using Internet Explorer, it works fine, I like how the Bonzi buddy helps me browse the web.
- sooperdooper, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Fun fact! That sentence is grammatically correct. The phrase "what work still needs to be done" could use some clarifying, to be sure, but can be phrased as a declarative or an interrogative sentence. Read what you wrote; how awkward would the subheading be with a question mark at the end? Douche.
- spc2226, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Not to mention that you have a syntax error in your code...
- Haroldx, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8I know, it's so generous too.
Always giving me offers to have 50% off this and free this and that, how nice! - aaronlev, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Accessibility means software is usable by people with disabilities. Opera is not usable by people who are blind, that operate software with a screen reader like JAWS or Window-Eyes.
Firefox is the first web browser to work on making Web 2.0 / AJAX / DHTML applications accessible. - dkoon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4guys please don't ask fanboys for facts.
- DarkSorrow, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8thank you for giving me a horrible memories of BonziBUDDY. *shivers*
- IQ70, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7It would be good if the "world's most accessible web browser" title was given to Firefox by someone who was disabled, rather than a Mozilla employee.
- j01101010, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1only if you ignore the word "be", in "what work still needs to BE done"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Is that why Firefox's market share has been virtually stagnant for a year now?
- FaT32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Read recent article by Gez "access" Lemon "Firefox 2.0 and Access Keys":
http://juicystudio.com/article/firefox2-accesskeys.php - vhold, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"Good for them, they come by the profit honestly."
I suppose I feel there is a -slightly- dishonest aspect to the notion that the profitable Mozilla corporation is removed from the Mozilla Foundation.
Try to figure out that the Mozilla corporation is -for- profit from this page:
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/about/
Especially statements like:
"Mozilla Corporation is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Mozilla Foundation, a non-profit foundation, and is not a publicly traded company"
The parenthetical statement refers to the Mozilla Foundation, not the Corporation. Why aren't they just up front about their for-profit aspect? It's just weird to me. - tanaeem, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I have always said that,
the reason why open source is not being able to succed and firefox succeded is usability, not feature. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Isn't Opera the most accessible browser? I find it a lot more polished than Firefox in terms of usability.
- saifatlast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The "what work needs to be done" is part of the subject.
It's just like "the people who kill them" isn't a complete sentence. - drilldown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1How about this. Buy a new stereo, car, DVD, Blu Ray, HDDVD, TV, and wake-up alarm because a format change has made all of them incompatible, say in the standard 3 year format from M$.
Changing air conditioner compressors to suit the new EPA standards in cars... 10 yrs or so. And this is merely data: information. Words on a phone line. Incompatible is a foreign language and should be treated as such. I treat it as such. - DigitalDesignDJ, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4It really is amazing that open source software and projects seem to be getting more and more attention, I mean who doesn't use wikipedia? The big software corporations just seem to focus on one thing, profit, and public services in software is not a profit making venture. Sure they do put some features in, but it's the bare minimum.
- tlog333, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I very much respect Aaron's work. He is committed to making the Firefox browser the most accessible Internet browser. Good job Aaron!
- drilldown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1And so the internet of information is easily equated with a playstation. The article references Firefox and it's compatibility to a variety of systems.
or are web pages relegated to chutes and tubes that will only play on Atari and should the internet inherit those traits? Linux sites only viewable by Linux browsers. MAC sites viewable only through MAC browsers.
My personal favorite: The AOL Browser and ISP attempting to corner the internet. Oh yeah, failed on a scale second to none. After initial raves.
Only the number of corporations involved saved that puppy from hell on Earth.
People *like* Firefox for what it is. A telephone to the rest of the world. - xErath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>Accessibility means software is usable by people with disabilities. Opera is not
>usable by people who are blind, that operate software with a screen reader like
>JAWS or Window-Eyes.
Big lie
Opera is by far much more accessible.
Opera has built-in default keyboard shortcuts for all common actions, many of them are one key shortcuts. It supports mouse gestures allowing control with the mouse only.
It's currently the only browser which supports spatial navigation.
It has FULL voice control, and READS the web-page for you.
It supports full web-page zoom.
It has a set of user style-sheets, to enhance several elements in the web-page, or change the display to high contrast for fonts, which can be easily triggered in the View menu.
Firefox has none of these except almost for the keyboard shortcuts. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3They're not getting more and more attention. What they're getting is continual attention from the same group of people.
How many new users do you think firefox/ubuntu/etc gets because of a pitch on digg? - vhold, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Hey, I'm just wondering.. if like. .you people realize that the Mozilla organization has a rather successful -for- profit aspect? The Mozilla corporation.
http://www.forbes.com/2005/08/03/mozilla-firefox-forprofit-cx_ld_0803mozilla.html
They were basically making so much money from the google homepage referral and search box referral that uhm, they decided to keep it and go for profit. - drilldown, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Good for them, they come by the profit honestly. Naturally, I changed the home page on my personal Firefox from the google copycat page on day one of install. Back to the original google homepage of every one of my browsers.
Some people like news, or social sites when the browser opens. When I hit the web, I'm hunting. With credit due where credit belongs. All sites I go to regularly go to the google search engines. - IQ70, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I don't think Apple makes Safari for OS7 nor does KDE make Konquerer for KDE 1.1
Why the ***** don't you post this fact out along with your anti-MS rant? - drilldown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Every browser has to have a home page. If it helps open-source developers in some roundabout fashion by pointing to google at first blush? Still better than a blank page on the web in my honest opinion when loading a web browser for the first time.
And Linux accessibility features... That is the point of the article should anybody have actually read it. On EVERY Operating system platform. Isn't that nice? Interestingly, IE6 glitches on Yahoo were fixed by loading the latest version of Opera on a Windows 98 system. Think about that. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2How long should MS support previous operating systems for? Even open source doesn't indefinitely do it - Ubuntu gives you 2 years (I think) per release?
Hardware manufacturers would laugh and charge you shipping/handling/consulting if you sent an 8 year old pc in for "support".
Upgrade and/or piss off. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Is that why more and more people are switching to firefox, eating IE's marketshare?
(...for example; there are other open source projects that are also increasing in participants)
Or were you just trolling? - saifatlast, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5Why are you guys digging him down? My mom IS an open source accessibility success story!!
How'd you know, dizzle? - ColonelKilkenny, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1You're right.
And that article is talking about AJAX which has a very little to do with accessibility when comparing it for an example to things like VoiceXML....
And written by a very self confident mozilla fellow...
Marked as inaccurate or spam or whatever. - dkoon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1at least 3 pitches per hour on digg.
- init2null, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1The for-profit aspect doesn't matter, since Mozilla Corporation exists solely to support the purposes of the foundation. These are just legal definitions, so I just don't see why anyone is concerned.
- republicoftexas, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2For a laugh, read this thread. There are several people on it talking about how much they loved BonziBUDDY. For extra chuckles, be sure to read the replies.
http://techrepublic.com.com/5208-6230-0.html?forumID=3&threadID=189144&messageID=1943022
btw - anyone have an old exe for bonzibuddy? I want to pull a prank on a friend. - mrkmrk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3No. They're explaining what the article does, not asking the question. There is no question mark necessary.
- saifatlast, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Actually that isn't a complete sentence. It lacks a predicate.
Just sayin'. - TehDoctor, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2User* jarva=new User();

- drilldown, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Internet Explorer 7 no longer supports their own operating system, windows 98. Also requires WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage). A web browser that won't run one of the most common operating systems and one designed by the maker of that web browser?
It is beyond an apathetic and disgraceful design failure in order to promote the sales of their upgrades and leaving those who cannot afford to do so - their previous customers, to watch their systems get hacked and crash. Screw M$ and their broke ass proprietary web browser that won't even run on their own system. Go Opera! Go Firefox! - thepxc, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2@Harold
He's high on righteous, glorious, geeky anger, and you're just raining all over his love parade! - Haroldx, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2@ thepxc, that's an even worse diss.

What are you on.. ? - thepxc, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2And YOUR mom is a disgrace to society, as you have so kindly evidenced for us.
- thepxc, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1K... I got a rhyme for it:
When it comes to accessibility
out of ten, Firefox is less than three...
